Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin nuvi 880 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

Customer Review: excellent gps, but expensive
Summary: 4 Stars

Have been using this for about a week since the day after it came out. Long time Garmin customer, and have loved the Street Pilot series.
Overall this is a great product. The voice recognition is excellent, with almost no errors if the radio is off. I do miss the remote that my street pilot came with, but as I get more used to the VR, I think that will go away.
The MSN features are good, with the best one (in my mind) being the ability to send map points directly to your Nuvi without connecting it to your computer. You do this via Live Search maps, not as good as Google maps, but not bad at all. You can move waypoints from Google maps, but you have to physically connect the unit to the computer.
Given the price I had hoped the GPS unit would find satellites immediately on starting (like the built in unit in my wife's Honda). However (like the street pilot) it take about 20-30 seconds if the car has been turned off for a while.
Mapping software seems great, I haven't gotten any directions that didn't make sense.
Did not come with any software for the computer, as the Street Pilots did, which I am somewhat surprised about. Maybe Garmin is phasing out MapSource now that everyone is using Google maps? Not sure.
Overall excellent, but then again, given that it is basically the most expensive GPS out there, it should be.
If it was even 200 dollars cheaper, I would give it 5 starts, but given the value, I would bump it down to 4.

Customer Review: Here's the problem with Garmin
Summary: 1 Stars

I have had a Garmin 2610 since 2004. I decided to buy this unit for my wife. We both could not get the system to understand the numbers we were speaking for the address and I had to hand type them in. It was also hit and miss on names and other voice recognition tasks. I have a 2007 Highlander Hybrid so the car is quiet.

Also, something as simple as the MPH does not show up when using the route feature. The MPH is there when you aren't routing but not there when you are routing. The posted speed of the street is shown on the screen but not the speed you are traveling. Huh?

Garmin won't update the system with this feature even though they added the ability to choose what shows up on the screen in their newer line of GPS'like the 7x5. Yes that is right, even though this model is only 5 months old, they consider it an old model.

I talked to their customer service several times and they told me that it wouldn't get fixed in the 880 but was fixed in the 7x5 series which doesn't have voice recognition. Seems a bit expensive if you can't have all you had in an old Garmin model, 2610, plus the extras of the 880.

I give it a low rating because Garmin has become a company with too many products and no longer listen to their customers. Consumer Reports says its the best so I wondering if they actually used it under real conditions and was tested by someone that had a GPS before.

Customer Review: Don't buy this unit!!! Read why
Summary: 1 Stars

Got the unit for my mother in law for christmas and spent two days trying to set it up. 1> The voice function does not work well. Kept trying to send us to a hospital 2> Even the most recent maps are not up to date, whole shopping malls missing that have been there for years. 3> Instructions for turns come only when you're right up on them. 4> MSN after two days could not update nor work the right way. 5> Unit freezes and the only way to get it to shut down is to, open unit, and take out battery, and then reboot. 6> If you need lanes the unit does not show them. 7> Unit is very slow to find locations. 8> It takes way too long to have to input information to find a place or put in directions. 9> The unit won't take my home address in the location I live. You have to set your home to "A location" it shows my home over 500 ft away from where it really is. >10 Unit shuts off on it's own. >11 Screen brightness changes and has to be reset. >12 Update of 880 software did not work and reference to 850 was only update the machine would take after trying everything else.

This is the worst electronic device I have ever bought. I'm in a big city on the MSN and Garmin coverage areas. I'd say stay away from this unit at ALL costs. Also returning it is a nightmare. It's not sold by Amazon but a 2nd party reseller. The fighting to get a refund is beyond anything I've ever seen. What a nightmare this purchase has been.

Customer Review: Garmin works great...
Summary: 5 Stars

Recently purchased this product for present for fiance. No problems at all and the unit works wonderfully. Not all features have been tried yet, so the review is for basic performance of navigating. The voice recognition has not been tested and the MSN function has not been activated yet.

Pros: Directions are spot on. When taking a different route to the one Garmin calculates, the recalculations are quick and provide excellent directions on the fly. Maps are easy to see and read, and volume is more than enough to hear with music on in background.

Cons: The Garmin voice mispronounces some of the street names. It is more of a mumble than anything, but when using it this weekend, the unit pronounced the street we needed to turn on horribly and I was a bit confused. Looking at the map on the unit showed me the correct street.

Used the device to navigate into downtown Dallas for the opera this past weekend to an area I had never been to or driven to. We arrived at the opera house without any problems, and when I took a slightly different route to the one provided due to construction, we were provided with recalculated directions within seconds. I am eager to test the other functions on the unit, but I am very happy with this device and feel more confortable driving to areas I am unfamiliar with.

Customer Review: NUVI 880 Is State-of-the-Art
Summary: 5 Stars

If your looking for a full featured, hands-free operable GPS unit, this is the one to consider. Compared to other units, this Garmin unit far exceeded my requirements. The added MSN features such as searching for the cheapest gas, latest movies, closest theatres and movie time makes the NUVI 880 AN EXCEPTIONAL CHOICE! You can voice activate this NUVI while driving, allowing you to focus completely on driving and not on making selections on the GPS. Add the fully functional bluetooth feature and your listening to your GPS' responses through your car's stereo system.

Make sure that when purchasing such an expensive unit that you don't forego getting an extended warranty. I was skeptical purchasing this GPS unit from certain vendors on the internet since so many had a bad reputation with customers and the Better Business Bureau. Beware with gray market offers from unreliable vendors. Gray market GPS are not generally covered by the manufacture's warranty. Stick to reputable vendors such as AMAZON. I actually called them to ensure that I was not getting a gray market GPS and the service rep provide the information I needed to assure that I wasn't being scammed. I am truly happy with this unit and my expereince with all my AMAZON puchases have been above board. All items were receive in a timely manner and factory fresh.
