Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin nüvi 765/765T 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic

Customer Review: The GPS I Wanted to Love, but Couldn't...
Summary: 2 Stars

There are four reasons I own a GPS unit: finding my way to places, avoiding traffic, listening to MP3s, podcasts and audiobooks, and utilizing a Bluetooth connection to my phone. The Garmin 765t does one thing well (navigating to a destination), another so-so (traffic), and two things miserably (playing MP3s and providing a Bluetooth connection to my phone). For the money, the 765t offers a lot of features, but instead of doing them better than its predecessors (the nuvi 660 and 760) this unit changes many good features to mediocre. I seriously wonder if the 765t team of engineers retained anyone from previous design teams. In using this unit, it almost feels as if the 765t was a copy of a Garmin product by another manufacturer, not an evolution of previous models. To any Garmin representative reading this review, let me be loud and clear about the nuvi 765t: this unit is a step backward, not forward, in your lineup of 4.3 inch GPS products.

I have owned a nuvi 660 for the last two and a half years that has served me well, but was not a fan of the big clunky antennae, silver color, and battery that now lasts for less than 30 minutes before conking out. Mom has a nuvi 760 which is a very nice (and popular) GPS unit. I have friends with TomToms that marvel at how cool my 660 is. My unit is inconspicuously cradled in a console cubby of a 2004 Camry and wired to the radio through a Peripheral Interface Kit (for anyone who has never seen or heard of these ingenious products, they hook up directly to your factory radio, tricking your stereo into thinking it is talking to a CD changer when in fact it is talking to a GPS, satellite radio receiver, iPod, or MP3 unit). After two years of paying one year subscriptions on my nuvi 660, paying another $60 for Garmin's lifetime traffic seemed a little ridiculous for a piece of electronics coming up on three years old. My logic: why not put that 60 bucks towards a newer unit with lifetime traffic?

To sum up my recent purchase of 765t: if this was my first GPS unit, I couldn't in good conscious recommend a Garmin to friends or family. But before you click out and say this unit isn't worth my time or money, read on as this review might be the GPS for you depending on the features you need and how you use it.

Let me start with what this unit does well: first it is a beautiful product. Garmin mounts seem to be better made than those from TomTom and Magellan, and after almost three years with my original 660, the mount is still hanging in there. The 765t I recently purchased comes in all black and has a pleasant and somewhat rubbery (but not too rubbery) feel to the outside. The unit has two external microphones, an SD slot, and a standard headphone jack. The lifetime traffic service is activated through the power adapter, not the unit itself (this later turns out to be a good thing and one of the only reasons it so far hasn't been returned to Amazon).

The main reason I wanted to upgraded to this unit was for the 765t's lifetime traffic. The new traffic receiver however is a little bit of a jolt compared to my old traffic receiver. On the 660, the GPS unit would signal "traffic ahead" and give you a distance (3 miles, 5 miles, 10 miles) before you run into it. On a regular commute, this was great because after awhile you got used to the normal traffic slow spots and knew whether or not to avoid them. On the 765t, the GPS unit says traffic ahead, but gives the driver no aural identification as to exactly how far ahead. To figure it out, you have to either look at the unit (if it's setup correctly) or navigate through the touch screen.

While driving, the operator has the choice of a regular map or a traffic overlay. In the three weeks since I've had this unit, I found myself opting for the traffic overlay, but really couldn't quite get the hang of the "big picture" from the 765t like I was used to from the 660. The 765t also is hypersensitive when it comes to traffic: as soon as I got onto a busy street, the unit would instantly shout out "traffic ahead" many times when there was no traffic at all. Stoplights aren't traffic, they're stoplights. The lifetime traffic feature is cool, but like the boy who cried wolf, only effective if it is accurate.

What else is there to like about this unit: the lane guidance/junction view features are nothing short of cool! In a few tests just to see how it worked, the unit nailed all of those trouble spots around my area (Tampa Bay) that always confuse the gaggle of Canadians and Europeans that settle in the area as soon as it turns too cold up north and across the ocean. Also, when getting ready to navigate to a destination, the unit will show how long it will take to get there before actually pushing the "go" button. Satellite tracking on a cold startup was quicker than the 660, maps seem more accurate than in the past couple of years (the unit finally got me to International Mall in Tampa from St. Petersburg without making me pull a U-turn on I-275), and the menu layout has some advantages over the older 660 unit. So, the navigation: big thumbs up. The traffic: so-so, but free is nice (the little ads from Garmin are at first annoying but able to be ignored after you get used to the same Best Western ad every time you stop the car).

My biggest gripes: let's start with the MP3 player. First off, I have no idea why Garmin opted for the 765t to not show the MP3 player button on the map screen when the MP3 player is paused. This is ridiculous. To get to the MP3 player after you pause it (or after you start the unit up), you have to go to the main screen, tools, media player, and then back out again to get back to your map. The logic was probably providing more "map" to the user if they weren't listening to an MP3, podcast, or audiobook. The stupidity of locked-the-basement-engineers vs. real world users is that people may sometime pause a song, book, or news feature, but still want to be able to get back to it quickly without too many key clicks (um... the whole point is more concentration on driving than on things in your car, right?). Just plain stupid. Unfortunately, the 760 has the same problem, so this isn't limited to the new model. In addition, I don't believe something is wrong with my unit, but it has a funny way of re-ordering my playlists on its own. I have over 1200 songs on an 8mb SD card with about 45 playlists. On several occasions, after getting back in the car, the media player would start at a different song and then play them in a random order. I know- you're thinking I had the random button depressed, but I've barely used it since I bought the 765t. It's as if the unit thinks it knows a better order of songs than I do.

Another gripe of the MP3 player: current song playing display. On the 660, the media player showed the current song playing; on the 765t (and 760) the media player shows the current song and the next two songs. Not a bad feature, but like the disappearing media button on the map, this should be an operator option. The trouble: I'm no spring chicken and type that small is getting harder to read as I get older. I'm thinking those 765t engineers locked in the basement are also probably a bunch of 20 year olds who ate carrots every day while growing up.

Enough about the media player and to the heart of why I am writing such a long review and my biggest point of dissatisfaction with the nuvi 765t: the Bluetooth. When I first got my 660, I had a T-Mobile Blackberry 7100t that linked with the unit, but didn't load the phonebook, call history, or detailed caller ID. To call someone in my address book, I had to call from the phone, not the GPS unit. When someone called me, the number would show up, but no specific details (Mom cell, Dad home, etc...). When I upgraded to a T-Mobile G1, I was ecstatic to find my trusty little 660 now loaded my phonebook, call history, and address book caller ID.

Can you guess what happened with the 765t when paired with a T-Mobile G1? It loads your call history (great). It loads your phonebook along with a couple of random 1 digit numbers floating around I guess in its own memory (not so great, but pretty good). There is however no caller ID supported when this model is paired with my particular phone. And I don't mean address book caller ID, I mean NO CALLER ID at all! Every call that came into my phone was UNKNOWN NUMBER. This is beyond ridiculous, completely unacceptable and a breaking point pushing the Garmin nuvi 765t from not bad with a few quirks to deplorable depending on your needs. For me, that need was to be able to use my cell phone through my GPS unit while driving instead of fishing around for it to see who's calling. Furthermore, everyone I spoke to when I used the 765t said they had a really hard time hearing me even though I was driving the same roads at the same speed using the same external microphone as I had weeks before with the old 660.

So what's my conclusion: I switched GPS units with Mom! Even though she's in real estate, she stays pretty local and barely uses her nuvi 760. She doesn't use her Bluetooth, traffic, or MP3 player. She bought the unit because at the time it was the best bang for the buck even though she didn't need every feature. I switched units with her because she really likes the lane assist and up to date maps. The two best features for me however: the lifetime traffic receiver works with the 760 (with no ads btw) and my caller ID phonebook from my T-Mobile G1 works with the 760 as well! Hooray for small miracles! BTW- if you're looking for how to transfer your phone books between units and some other neat things (like uploading Google Map directions straight to your GPS unit) type in nuvi tips and tricks in your search engine and click on the first entry (you rock Gary Hayman!).

Some final notes (and again, I hope the Garmin rep is taking note): when I first had the problem with the Bluetooth on my unit, I e-mailed Garmin customer support. The first e-mail was the customary "did you do all your software and firmware updates." The second was more detailed and took me to the 765t's engineering page (press the speed button on the map page, then long press the speedometer and you'll find yourself with a slew of engineering diagnostic pages). Garmin said I might have to upgrade my Bluetooth firmware; when I got to that page it was already updated and gave me no option. Third e-mail from Garmin: SOL (here's your hat, what's your hurry?). Nice guys; real nice....

So how'd I do? The 765t is not a bad product, but after three years and manufacturing tens if not hundreds of thousands of these things, the 765t should be a GREAT product. I've always recommended Garmins to my friends and family, but the 765t was a real disappointment. Garmin, instead of gaining more customers, this misstep has pushed me away. Your engineering and customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Get the 20 something year old carrot eating engineers out of the basement and into the real world if you decide to manufacture a 900 series of GPS units.
