Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin nüvi 270 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: Great buy, even better price Summary: 4 Stars
I work in Europe (Spain) right now but wanted a GPS that had maps of USA as well for when I go back to the US. I've read reviews that sometimes this GPS unit had trouble picking up satellites, however, this unit worked right out of the box. Within a minute, the unit picked up satellites and worked great. I was using a work issued Garmin 350T GPS before, and that required an external antenna to aid in picking up satellites. The 270 requires no external antenna and would even pick up satellites inside my bedroom. It's compact, attached right on my front window, and worked great. While I have not traveled outside of Spain to road-test it, it's worked great in Spain, even accurately guiding through small streets and back roads. When I researched this unit, the 270 was going for $399 retail. I paid $130 for it and got free shipping, so I got a great deal on it through Amazon.com's website. While this unit doesn't speak road names, I found I really don't need that feature. I would recommend this GPS model for others who require maps for both Europe and the USA. Upon purchase and registering the unit with Garmin's website, Garmin updated my maps to City Navigator 2009, which was another added bonus. This is the first GPS unit I've purchased with my own money and it's been great so far. I did not give the unit a 5 star rating because I have no had a chance to test outside of my city.
Customer Review: You also need a map! Summary: 4 Stars
Just back from a trip starting and ending in Barcelona with a side trip to France. Leaving and returning to Barcelona Sants rail station would have made be nuts if I hadn't had this unit! All things considered, it is a great unit for the price and the bonus of entering destinations via Google Maps is terrific. My unit had the 2009 USA map and 2008 Europe map which I updated to 2010. No need to get the AC adaptor since USB recharges the battery.
But you also have to think! Consider for example Camon (Midi-Pyrenees) France to Peyrepertuse (*** site). The fastest route is via the D117 to Maury. Instead, it took us on the narrow and twisty (but very scenic) D14. Since that's also the route suggested by maps[...], you can't blame Garmin. I think the problem is that all D roads in France are considered to have the same average speed, and that isn't the case. The workaround is simply to set Maury as the first destination.
In towns Garmin needs a smarter algorithm as follows: if you entering a town on, say, the D117 and leave on the D117, it should keep you ON the D117 and not confuse you with local street names. More importantly, IT SHOULD NOT send you off the D117 up a narrow lane in order to shave a few meters off the trip! I'll bet the more expensive Nuvi units are no better at this, so I'm glad I didn't pay too much.
Customer Review: Second Nuvi 270 Purchase, Excellent Value, US and Europe in my Pocket Summary: 5 Stars
I traveled extensively as a sales representative throughout Europe and bought the 270 because of it's preinstalled US and European maps.
After receiving my Nuvi from Amazon, I opened the box and found the unit to be roughly the size of a deck of cards. It easily fits in my shirt pocket making it ideal for traveling.
The unit works off battery power or by cigarette lighter adapter. Battery power once fully charged lasted me 4 hours.
In a recent trip to the UK, the unit performed quite well, and excelled at directing me which exit off the "round-a-bout" I needed to take. I had take the time to print maps for all of my sales calls, but never picked one up because the Nuvi literally delivered me to the front door of every customer.
As I mentioned in the subject line of my review, this was my 2nd Nuvi 270 purchased, as I loaned my other to a colleague who loved it so much he bought it from me. I'm thrilled to see that Amazon had a better price on the Nuvi that I previously paid, so I had to get another.
In a nutshell, the Nuvi 270 is well built portable GPS without all of the bells and whistles. It does feature a flash card slot for viewing photos and also includes a conversion program for money etc.
After buying two, I recommend the unit to anyone.
Customer Review: Garmin 270 in France Summary: 5 Stars
I've just returned (April 2008) from 2 1/2 week driving trip to south of France - Provence to Dordorgne by way of Carcassonne - with my new Garmin 270. I've been to France and Great Britain probably 50 times, including extensive driving. However, this was first time to try a GPS. I can't imagine going to Europe again without a GPS; it was great!! And Garmin 270 proved to be good choice for me, i.e., simple, not a lot of extras I didn't need, and worked smoothly right out of the box. We were mostly in very rural parts of France, and the maps were nearly perfect - it took me on scenic rural roads that I wouldn't have picked out from a paper map - but always with good start-to-destination results. Always found a satellite pretty quickly except one time, when it searched and searched. Eventually, I turned it off, drove a couple of kilometers, then re-started, and it found the satellite quick as usual. Minor map errors mostly had to do with mis-counting the number of exits from a round-about, but likely mostly due to either (1.) a newly added round-about exit/entrance, or (2.) a minor exit/entrance that was questionable if it should have been counted. All in all, an enjoyable experience even for a person who is very familiar with driving in western Europe. 5-star recommendation.

Garmin nüvi 270 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Purchased this unit just days before leaving for France. The unit included maps of both North America and Europe and was attractively priced so I decided to take a chance as we were renting a car in Aix en Provence and planned to drive throughout Provence. Our first stop however was in Paris where we would rely on public transportation and walking. The unit was not much help walking, however this was not my primary reason for purchase. A map works fine for walking and it is far easier to stop and figure things out while walking.
We traveled from Paris to Aix en Provence on the TGV. I turned the Nuvi 270 on while on the train and it tracked our position without a problem. It was interesting to see our speed and where we were, it also reported that we reached a maximum speed of 192 MPH. The unit proved its worth in the Provence area. We never got lost and we could always find our way back to our hotel. It was well worth the price, we were able to travel in a foreign country and never be lost. This allowed us to enjoy what we were seeing instead of trying to find our next turn.
