Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin nüvi 270 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: What a deal! Summary: 5 Stars
For $138, this was the best deal! We bought this because it was pre-loaded with the European maps for our trip to Italy. While the maps were probably not completely up-to-date, we had no major problems. You will always find discrepencies where there is new construction, or dirt roads, so it is always good to have a paper map as a reference and just use common sense. Also, be aware of the ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) zones in the middle of cities where you will get a steep fine if you drive inside -- the GPS did not recognize these, but we couldn't miss the big signs, so no problem again.
A great feature was that it alerted you well before you approached a roadside speed camera (usually where you enter a town and the speed limit is suddenly lower). The cameras take a photo of your plate and later you get a pricey traffic fine mailed to you when you get home. I'm happy to say that because of the warnings of the GPS we avoided all speeding tickets.
Great for use in the States too, we're very happy with it!
Customer Review: Garmin GPS 270nuvi Summary: 4 Stars
The Garmin GPS is so easy to use and it has actually saved us money with travel expenses. I have set it for the most direct route. On one trip across 12 states, we later found that by following the Garmin route, we had cut over 115 miles off our trip. That was at a time that gas prices was well over $3 a gallon, so we felt that we most likely paid for the Garmin with the gas that we saved with it's route calculations.
I only gave it a 4 star due to one small flaw we have found. Twice, we have programed an address and when we arrived at our destination, the business had moved. I am not sure how often business places are updated, but that was somewhat of an annoyance. The Garmin did take us there, the information just had not been updated from the business...we went to the old address instead of the newer one that opened about 8 mos. ago.
Otherwise, this is a great product and was a fantastic price from Amazon.com. I saved over $200 by comparing prices and shopping with Amazon.com!
Customer Review: Leave it in the box if traveling to France or Italy Summary: 1 Stars
Just returned back from France and Italy with this product which I purchased before traveling. Absolutely useless. Had me making u-turns on freeways, we nearly ended up in Spain on one trip while the device added 4 hours to a 1.5 hour trip. Rome was a joke as it consistently "updated" every 2 seconds and could never make up its mind. Tried it also for walking but you have to have an IFR pilots license to be able to work out directions. In built up areas like Paris and Rome it couldn't identify areas even when i was standing directly at the point of location and common restaurants and other attractions. The South of France was the worst and even when you tried to scroll out to a larger view to do some form of location pin-pointing the device kept going back to micro-map mode. Do not waste your money. Try one of the others that has Euro maps. I have a Garmin in my cars for the US and that is why i purchased this. The US Garmins are awesome but this product will do you more harm that good internationaly.
Customer Review: Garmin nuvi 270 GPS Summary: 5 Stars
Aces on this one. I was told by others that Garmin is the best, so I bought this one. We used it on a known trip just to check it's accuracy, and it actually put us on a better route. The "speaker" is loud and clear and you can adjust it. What I liked was the estimated time of arrival which adjusts to your speed, and it was accurate to within a minute. It gives you warnings before an intersection, and tells you when to make your turns. Easy to program and use.
The only negative is the disc they give you for a permanent place to stick the device, the glue is worthless. Some states have restrictions on the window mounting so check before mounting using the suction mount.
You could just lay it on the seat and listen to the instructions. Even though the screen is 3.5", it has a good vertical height and the screen is easy to see.
If you do a lot of driving, then you might want to get a model that tells you about traffic problems and alternate routes.
Customer Review: Good entry level device Summary: 3 Stars
The Garmin Nuvi 270 is a good first time gps. The graphics are good, the battery life very good and the design are all good. I have owned the device for 6 months and used it in various US cities as well as in France. This is the only gps I've used so I can't compare it to others. My one bit of advice is don't throw away your maps. The directions are correct about 90% of the time. Here is an example for Bay Area residents. We tested the device on a trip to Napa from San Francisco. When we arrived at the intersection of Hwy 37 and 121 the device told us to go south, the exact opposite direction. Some other weaknesses include a slow boot up, and inability to detect satellites indoors, meaning you have to go outside and sit in your car while it finds the satellites, and it often loses connection in dense downtown area or very hilly terrain. It sometimes has difficulty recognizing street names or towns. As long as you have a map and a general sense of where you are going, it works fine and is well priced.
