Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin nüvi 265/265T 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic

Customer Review: Great gift
Summary: 4 Stars

I am the owner of a garmin 465t and have found it very useful. I always check my route in the atlas since the options of fastest or quickest are not always the easiest. I purchased the garmin nuvi 265t as a gift for someone who had problems with two previous gps units. He was very happy with the features and ease of use. He was also excited to see that the size will allow him to mount it on his motorcycle handlebars, and since motorcycle gps units are so expensive, this is a good "poor man's" motorcycle gps if you purchase the ram mount and a waterproofing cover( or don't ride in the rain, lol) The only problem he & I noticed while taking a trip together was that on a few occasions it would either say to turn the wrong direction or indicate a turn at the wrong time. For instance, it suggested a make a sharp right in the middle of a bridge. If the bridge had not been over water, I could have passed it off as the satelite reading that I was on a street below the bridge perhaps, but this is one of the few problems I have noticed. Other than that, it's easy to use and when utilizing all of it's options can be a time saver. In addition, the shipping was quick and I received it in plenty of time for Christmas.

Customer Review: Works well, some minor drawbacks
Summary: 4 Stars

The unit was recommended in Consumer Reports, is easy to use and quite accurate. The only problem I've encountered is that the power adapter for the car does not work in all vehicles. I bought the unit recently before traveling for business and the adapter didn't work in my rental car (a Hyundai Sonata, for anyone curious), and returned home to find that it doesn't work in my VW Golf either.
The kit I purchased does include a USB power adapter, and it gets about three and a half hours of juice per charge. My way around this problem has been to turn the system off during long stretches of longer trips (i.e., when it tells me I'll be on the same highway for 90 miles), then turn it on when I know I'm approaching my next turn. This is not ideal, but still gets me where I need to go.
One other note is to still pay close attention to signage, particularly when it directs you to major destinations like airports or train stations. For example, in Austin, TX it directed me to the cargo and service exit ramp at the airport. I was able, at that point, to follow the signage to passenger pickup, but have found such scenarios are not unusual. Don't let its directions override your common sense.

Customer Review: Good but not great
Summary: 4 Stars

We owned one of these devices previously, but it was stolen so we decided to replace it, and chose the same model we had before. The only real problem came during installation/setup. Garmin gives a free map upgrade (which is great, they didn't use to, and you got a navigator maps a few years old - out of the box) but the upgrade didn't work on our Vista 64bit machine. I had to take the device down to my work pc which runs XP 32bit to get the maps to install correctly.

The accuracy is always been a bit soft, sometimes it says something is on the right side of the street, when its on the left, etc. But nothing too bad. It almost got us lost up on the mountains once with us low on gas, but we were able to change our destination from some obscure location in the mountains, to a small town near by to get gas and to ask for directions from a local.

But overall it works well, the text to speech is pretty good, though it does sometimes change its pronunciation from time to time. Typically as we get closer the pronunciation becomes more accurate.

This was rated as a "best buy" by consumer reports, and I'd agree with that. For the money it is a good device.

Customer Review: Had it for 1 week and returned it

I rec'd the Garmin 265T on 4/27. I purchased it because the price was good and the traffic update function did not require a subscription. The advertisements people were complaining about...they are very small and not at all annoying. What is very annoying though is the fact that the main reason I went with Garmin was the traffic report function, and that did not work at all. I live in the NY/NJ Metro area and my husband, 2yr old twins, 5yr old son, and me took a trip into NYC for Mother's Day on 5/9 and were stuck in traffic for 3 HOURS!!! And NOT ONCE did the traffic icon turn red, and NOT ONCE did Garmin try to re-route us. I am very disappointed in this product and am returning it. Thankfully, my TomTomONE started working again (just needed to completely charge it--duh on me), and w/ a quick hook up online I was able to update the maps and also upload some new functions there -- works like brand new!

Don't buy into the free traffic reporter feature on this Garmin product... it doesn't work!! Also, didn't really like the way Garmin navigated through the set- up features. Wasn't very smooth. TomTomONE wins in that department as well.

I will stick w/ TomTom.

Customer Review: Love this Garmin
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this to replace a garmin i330. I like it because it speaks the street names, and has traffic on it. Unlike some reviewers, I don't find the voice annoying. I've used it for small hops around town, just to test my known routes, and some long trips (12 hours) for vacation, and it works really well. For one thing, it never lost satellite reception as the i330 has done frequently. The traffic is a nice feature, but once (so far) it didn't warn of the delay until after we hit it: but I suppose updates can't be instantaneous. I have no concerns with battery life or the traffic receiver being in the cord, as I leave it plugged in most all the time. The cord doesn't get in the way at all.

The only cons I can readily think of is the fact that it doesn't have an external volume control, and it has those pop up ads. The ads are really small, though, and don't obscure the route. They are just annoying. I love that it is eligible for the one time purchase lifetime map updates.....that will save me plenty of money over the years.

Over all, a great purchase so far. I've only had it for about a month, so durability is something I can't really assess now.
