Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin nüvi 260 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: Worth It!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I decided to buy this product because of the review on cnet.com. The editors gave it 4 stars, and the users gave it 4 stars. That is best score they gave to any gps on the site. Of course that factors in value for the dollar ... etc. I trust reviews on cnet, they haven't adviced me wrong yet.
OK about the product...
1) You don't need to read the instructions! The GUI is designed very well. You don't need to be a techie to start using it right out of the box... which i think is how every product should be designed.
2) It does a great job of pinpointing your exact location as you drive. It is truely remarkable. Accurate to feet in distance.
3) Great verbal instructions. Clearly spoken and easy to follow.
4) The screen in beautiful. I was really amazed by the resolution and clarity of the screen.
5) It has great extra features, like finding restaurants by type (sorted by distance). All types of different kinds of businesses, parks, movie theaters, repair shops, parking... you name it! But the interface is so thoughtfully designed, you don't get overwhelmed with options.
This is my first GPS, but I have seen others, none as cool as this one. For [...] 150.00 bucks... totally worth it. I am going to save money with this thing. Just to never being lost again, no wasted gas money. It is so helpful. Sometimes, without GPS, you are going out the way and not even realizing it. Use this GPS, and you will always be taking the best route. That saves frustration and money.
Customer Review: Relieve the stress in your relationship Summary: 5 Stars
Do you find trips stressful? If your partner insists on reading the directions to you yet blame you for every misstep, this unit is for you.
It's nothing fancy but has all of the necessary features needed in a good GPS.
Over the past couple of weekends, the Garmin 260 has yet to steer me wrong. We were even lost in the downtown of a town we didn't know at 2am, and still made our way home.
I use to get anxiety taking trips. There's a big preparation process; look up directions on Google maps, print those out. Review those directions on a big state map. And hope to God that you don't miss a turn because it could cost you an hour to get back on the right path.
All of that prep is a thing of the past. Now I just punch in the destination address and away I go. Unbelievable how much less stressful trips have become. The drive was actually enjoyable this time.
I found a couple of time where I had "zoned out." In the old days I would have missed the turn and who knows where I would have ended up. But the Garmin 260 politely woke me up and reminded me of my upcoming turn. Crisis averted.
It's nice to be able to ride around an unknown city and not have to worry about how to get back to the hotel. Need to grab something from a nearby store? Just lookup the nearest Walmart in the Points of Interest database and the 260 will steer you there.
So go ahead, venture out into the city. Now you'll always be able to find your way back to the hotel. And that's a great feeling.
Customer Review: Great unit easy to use Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the Garmin nuvi 260 for my husband for Christmas. We were both impressed with how easy to use it is, we literaly took it out of the box plugged it in entered a route and started driving without even reading the manual or unit help. Since that time he has explored many more aspects of its capabilities and we are very happy with this unit.
I researched a number of brands and units before this one, and decided on the Garmin, one because we have a boat and have had 2 Garmin GPS for it and were happy with them and two, because other reviewers spoke highly of the Garmins and specifically of the Nuvi series. We did not have the need for the blue tooth capabilities of the 300 series nor need to plug our MP3 into our GPS so I opted to spend less money and buy the 260.
the feature of telling you the actual street name to turn onto rather than just turn right is in my opinion a must have. We had used a Delorme software product with a GPS receiver which works with my laptop which didn't tell you the street name you were to turn on to, we found it very confusing especially in busy cities and took wrong turns many times. This has happened only once with the nuvi and that was because we had it in pedestrian mode by mistake and "Jill" doesn't give the turn instructions as far in advance since "she" assumes you are walking.
The brightness of the screen is excellent and the windshield mount works very well. This unit exceeded my expectations for the price I paid which was under $300.
Customer Review: Good product at a fair price. Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the Nuvi 260 as a replacement for a Street Pilot 2610 which now has permanent placement on my motorcycle. It is an excellent gps with a much sharper screen than the old 2610.
The "detail" on the screen is quite different than on the 2610, in that a lot of clutter that shows on the 2610 doesn't show on the Nuvi...things like all of the stores, bars, etc that you aren't looking for do not show on the screen of the Nuvi like they did on the 2610. Sometimes I miss that extra information.
The voice is clear and the pronounciation is understandable if occasionally a little odd. It even pronounces the names of way points that you add to it's data base...nice.
Occasionally it does direct you along a route that is a little strange compared to the route I would usually take...this is of course in an area where I usually traveling...In finding locations from here in Nebraska to many locations on a trip to California it worked flawlessly, even in finding some obscure hot springs on really remote roads.
I loaned it to my daughter for a trip she was making to find some warm weather...she loved it so much that I gave it to her and purchased a Nuvi 260 with the wide screen for myself...the wide screen is nice, but I don't find the wide screen to be that much better, just larger.
I wouldn't have purchased the wider screen if it hadn't been for a great sale locally that made it cost the same as the smaller screen.
Customer Review: Great Product, some minor flaws Summary: 4 Stars
We just finished a 5 day driving trip (using side roads and the scenic/long route) from L.A. to S.F. and back using the Garmin, and it was great. My wife also uses it for work. Overall, great unit, very easy to use, nice features, I'll never use a paper map again. Good audio clarity, nice flexibility when you upgrade the firmware online for additional voices, good direction timing. It was really great to be able to find restaurants, gas, landmarks, etc. on the fly, and it also has a pedestrian mode. It also is very flexible if you ignore the instructions about suggesting some pretty good alternate driving instructions on the fly. Lots of nice stats available too, and it's very easy to use, both my wife and I can use it with ease now.
Cons: Weak signal, sometimes it takes a few minutes when you start it up to locate the satellites, and won't work at all inside my apartment, while a cheaper competitor will. Also, some of the directions try too much to optimize, and will take you off of what is in fact the fastest route, like a small stretch of a city street between a bend in the highway, taking you off, then on again, when clearly you should have just been kept on the freeway. Once again, a cheaper competitor's unit seems to work better on this (whichever one Costco sells regularly). If they can fix this, the unit would be perfect, but meanwhile, you end up having to second-guess the instructions a lot and know where it is you want to go and how.
