Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin eTrex Carrying CaseCustomer Review: Excellent case Summary: 5 Stars
I've had the E-Trex Legend for several years and needed to use it on a snowmobile without cobbling something hideous together with which to mount it. I'd originally wanted to mount it on the sled, but found the best place was slipped onto the strap for the goggles. The unit is still light enough to be forgotten on the helmet and it stayed put through some rather spirited rides. Tracking was fine. You can still access all the controls and the flap seems transparent to the signal needed to maintain contact with the satellites. It was used in some moderately wooded areas and suffered no apparent problems in keeping the track going. Should the unit fall, the extra material should offer additional protection.
Well worth the cost and perfectly suited to the snowmobiling venue. I also purchased the handlebar mount and will use it while four-wheeling after the snows melt, though the same helmet mount might be the ticket, once again. I'm sure it's subjected to less shock when on the headband for the goggles than if mounted on the handlebars, even with the rubber cushions.
Customer Review: A nice, helpful accessory for etrex Summary: 5 Stars
The Garmin Carry Case for the eTrex and Summit handheld GPS units is a convenient accessory for securely attaching the unit to a belt, backpack loop, or jacket pocket. The case has a clear plastic cover over the GPS screen, a belt clip (stiff spring steel) on the back, and leaves good access to the control buttons. The GPS slides into the case and a Velcro strap secures the case onto the GPS. A small opening at the bottom of the carry case allows the lanyard to be attached. The case is NOT a sealed covering: it just provides some scratch protection and the belt clip.
I have used the carry case to attach my GPS to a loop at the top of my small hydration pack when I am out on training runs. The high position gives excellent satellite exposure, and the carry case clip makes a very secure attachment even when bouncing around while running on uneven trails. I also put the lanyard through a clip as a backup, but I haven't had any issues.
A recommended, helpful accessory.
Customer Review: Nice case - small issue with quality Summary: 4 Stars
This case fits well, and works nicely to protect the GPS.
The only issue I have with it is the stiching on the front window has started to come a little loose at the top. TO BE FAIR, I could be the culprit as I tend to pull the top flap firmly when seating the GPS into the pouch, so it could be attributed to my own actions.
It still works great, I am just a little more careful about pulling on it now. The stiching is holding fine, and the case works great.
Be aware also, that due to its design (which is sort of necessary based on the key placement of the GPS), the top corners of the GPSr are still vulnerable to drops. So if you want something to completely surround your GPS, this isn't it. I wouldn't object if they cahnged the design slightly to widen the top flap so that it would reach the corners a little more.
Overall a great little case for the money.
Customer Review: Several major design flaws, for a eTrex Legend Summary: 1 Stars
1. Unless any case is completely dirt proof, no part of the case should be able to touch a unit's screen. Including a clear window. Dirt/dust WILL get in, and will get rubbed by the window to scratch the screen. Rather one should apply a stick-on screen protector, and then not cover the screen further.
2. The clear window is just another source of reflections, and as others have said, haze or fog. I suppose it could be unsewn, removed, and the case significantly re-sewn. Just cutting the window out would leave scratchy edges.
3. This case is too tight for the Legend's thickness = c. 1.18" max. It can be forced to stretch over, but batteries do have to be changed, and then that is not convenient. Inserting my Legend, with its screen protector, started to scrape the protector off.
I'm glad some other people like this case, but it doesn't work for me.
Customer Review: Well padded, but bulky and hard to see through Summary: 4 Stars
I bought the carrying case for obvious reasons. It is well padded and seems to old the unit securely. The buttons are easy to reach and the case has enough "play" in the velcro to accommodate the car charger when connected. As for the downside, the window in the case is not easily seen through. There is a lot of glare and the plastic window is held a ways from the unit. It may help to protect it more, but it makes readability difficult. Also, the carrying strap is designed to fit through a hole in the bottom of the case that's about the size of a human hair in diamater. Since it's hard to see through the plastic window because of glare, I constantly remove the GPS from the case to get a better look. All in all, I recommend the case. I think its benefits greatly outweighs its downsides.
