I bought this cable to charge my Garmin Nuvi 255w as my cigarette lighter in my car just died, thus making my car charger useless. This does allow me to charge my GPS through a computer but I was also hoping to get map updates ect. but it doesn't seem to work for that. I searched a lot and found some people have had problems with USB cables for the Garmin GPS units. This particular cable had good user reviews so I purchased one for my Garmin Nuvi 255 GPS unit. Since quite a few Garmin GPS devices come with a car charger, but no wall charger and no USB cable, this is a must for those buyers. And online here, you will save quite a few bucks from having to buy it at a brick & mortar electronics store. This USB cable is of high quality and works great. The price was less than half of the one on Garmin's site. It arrived promptly via US mail in perfect condition. This cable was cheap and functional, but it proved unreliable. When I used it to attach my GPS to the iMac, the computer kept thinking the device had been disconnected and giving me the warning not to disconnect without ejecting. When I replaced it with one by GE (also very cheap), the problem went away.
