I recently bought a Garmin nüvi 205 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator here on Amazon and wanted to register it, so I had to pick up this cable. If you have a Garmin and you don't have this cable, GET IT!
This cable will allow you to register your Garmin online, which should be done for warranty purposes anyway, plus you can download other vehicles, voices, and maps, including those of foreign countries.
Also, I can charge my Garmin via my laptop instead of in the car all the time. It allows me to run my Garmin on battery power more and plug in another devices, such as my MP3 FM transmitter or power inverter. Then, when I get home or back to the hotel room, I can just plug my Garmin into my computer and let it charge up for the next day.
These cables are inexpensive to get (I think I paid less than $7.00 total here on Amazon whereas other stores had them for $20.00-$40.00 or you could only get them in an accessory kit, which I didn't want or need), so if you are getting a Garmin, add this cable on to your order. You will not regret it, especially if you travel a lot.

I think that it is a shame that Garmin doesn't include this with their nuvi line - at least a USB didn't come with my 255W. That being said, one can then protest by not buying the USB cable directly from Garmin (at the ridiculous price of $14.99 at their website - and who knows if they charge tax and shipping).
This type of USB cable probably can be bought even cheaper elsewhere, but beware - sometimes cheaper is good, but sometimes cheaper is not good, or even comparable.
For those wondering if you even need a USB cable, you do if you want to download extras and map updates. You can also charge the GPS unit's batteries by having it hooked up to your computer.

The vendor who sold this is excellent, and the review is not a reflection on them...they are 5 star.
In selling this cable, Garmin has provided an aftermarket product that really has a one time use for most people. You buy the GPS, and you need this cable to download the latest maps to your Nuvi (or other). Once you have done the download, this cable is effectively useless, as you wont have any need, (at least that I can see), to ever use the cable again.
Shame on you Garmin! This should have been part of the original purchase, and not an aftermarket part to make the company a few more dollars.

This is just a standard usb "Mini-B plug" - I bought it alongside my Garmin Nuvi 1350T GPS, but I should have just waited. I already have two such wires, one that came with a digital camera and another with a hard drive.
If you are not sure if you have one or not, do your research into the different types of USB connectors and see if you have one that looks like a "Mini-B plug" - it could save you the price of this product.
That said, this wire is high quality and works well. I have kept mine and it will be useful to me. I just know I wouldn't have coughed up the cash for it if I had known then what I know now.

I bought the wire to update my maps on the Garmin Nuvi. It did that but when I tried to use the machine in the car, the unit kept shutting off after a few seconds. Turns out, upon looking closely, that the original plug no longer fits properly. Something was distorted when this USB plug was inserted. The Garmin no longer charges because the charging plug will not stay in the socket; it has to be physically held in place. It's kind of difficult to drive and keep holding the original wire into the socket. Very unhappy with this product and now facing a repair or replacement bill.
