Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Streetpilot C550 2.1-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

Customer Review: Excelent GPS device
Summary: 5 Stars

This c550 is my first GPS navigator and I'm very pleased with this purchase. The device is extremely useful for me as I recently moved to SF Bay area.

Pros:
- easy to use
- good text-to-speech street names
- fast route recalculation
- bright screen
- good sound quality
- traffic info
- the price is affordable

Cons:
- A little slow booting.
- The disclaimer message is annoying. Not sure if I can disable it.
- Sometimes slow satellite acquisition.
- If you know the route well, you will see that sometimes it chooses obviously not the simplest straightforward routes.
- Outdated points of interest.
- The dashboard disk does not stick at all, but suction mount for windshield is fine.
- The mp3 player feature is quite useless, as the sound quality is not good enough for music.
Anyway, the most of the cons are insignificant for me.

Other thoughts: The screen is small, but I don't need bigger, as all of the info is easy readable. However, sometimes the long street names are written with too small font. Also it would be great to have quick selection of city names from recently used. I'm not sure if the traffic information is useful enough, but it seems working.

Customer Review: Excellent product for the price and Novice
Summary: 5 Stars

Very easy to set up and use for the beginner. This is our first GPS unit and have found it to be 90% reliable. It has made some errors, but allows you to disregard its directions, make the turn that you want and then recalculates automatically based on your new turn and gives proper directions. One example was a trip to NYC from new jersey. The unit wanted me to use the GW Bridge, but I wanted to use the Lincoln Tunnel. I started out " my way" and within a few minutes, the unit recalculated and guided me to the Lincoln tunnel and final destination in NYC. No lost signal in NYC ( I later checked and found that the GWBridge way was a few miles less than the Tunnel and I assume that is why it picked the bridge.
Pros: Easy setup, automatic free downloads via the web( updates and software correction)
Easy to switch between autos ( we have three)
Major plus: Gives verbal street names, not just "turn right" Turn Left" instructions.
Cons: Dont like the windshield connection, it holds but is annoying and may be illegal. PurchasedGarmin 010-10747-02 Dash Mount for the StreetPilot C510/C550 for all three cars and was able to install on front of dash. Coffee cup holder mounts and air conditioner mounts are available for this unit but not tried by me.

Customer Review: One really nice GPS
Summary: 5 Stars

This GPS takes you where you want to go! Very easy to set up and use. Excellent satellite reception even though I made a custom mount and placed it down low on my dash.
The bluetooth function works well, especially when the vehicle is operated at low speeds. At highway speeds, when there is a little wind or road noise in the cab it is not quite as clear for the person on the other end.
The FM receiver is of little or no value to me, since you have to be in a big city to receive a broadcast signal. When the 90 day trial subscription runs out, I will not renew.
Battery life is not quite as long as stated......only about 2-3 hours.
If you loan it to your kids, don't tell them about the function that records the maximum speed. I busted my youngest son for driving 96.4 miles per hour when he was running late for weigh-in for a wrestling tournament. Of course that only works one time.
Be sure to thumb through the owner's manual so that you can see all of the functions that are available. A friend of mine had one of these for a couple of months, and he was surprised when I showed him some of the things it could do such as dragging the map in the browse map function.
All-in-all, very easy to use, and a very effective navigational tool!

Customer Review: Very Good NAV Unit For The Price
Summary: 5 Stars

Garmin Streetpilot c550 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
I was first exposed to this unit when I rented it with a car on my trip to San Diego, CA. No instructions were included so it was plug in, push "Where To?", and follow the simple, easy instructions. I also connected my cellphone to the Bluetooth feature in a very few easy steps. Piece of cake!!
The sound from the speakers was ok, understandable but a little tinny.
The map display was readable even in the desert sun on I15 east heading
towards Las Vegas.
When I returned from my trip, I promptly ordered one. Although I have a NAV system and Bluetooth in one car, our other car does not so it is used for both purposes in that vehicle.
I also will have it for use when I rent a car again and I wont have to pay $12 to $14 a day for NAV rental.
Very good price and easy to use.
I had an issue with a free updated 2009 map download and tech support was able to help resolve the issue.
I do recommend the dash mount as it is illegal to mount this unit on a windshield in CA. Must have something to do with radar detectors, I believe.

Customer Review: Garmin StreetPilot c550
Summary: 4 Stars

I like the Garmin StreetPilot, I had a c330 befor this one and was very happy with it's performance. I find the c550 more advanced w//bluetooth feature and alot more road names including County(rural dirt roads).
The one thing I don't like is Charging the Battery. I'm a full time RV'er and I use the Cigarette Lighter outlet to charge it. On the c330 no problem when it was Fully charged it would "Beep" Charge Completed but not on the c550. I've left in charging over night and Yes the Battery shows all green(4 boxes) but doesn't beep or read Charge completed. I've used my computer w/USB cable to charge it as well, again no "beep" or read out on the screen.
I will call Garmin about this and see what they say. I also still have some problems with "Final Destination" It doesn't Always give me the "Best Way". I wish it would allow me to use coordinates. Some Parks are out of the way and use the nearest big city for address and doesn't bring me to the destination point.
Over All, I'm happy with the Garmin. They do have a Navigator that uses coordinates but was out of my cost range. Your price was Very Reasonable" and Less that Any Other Store or Web site. Thank You for the"Grat Deal".
