Customer Review: My first GPS

This is the first GPS unit that I have bought and owned. Overall, I am very pleased with the unit. It is easy to setup and very easy to use. One thing that is nice is that all the maps are preloaded and you do not have to upload region maps if going to another area of the US. The point of interest are great. I can find anything I want and get easy directions to their location. I can add my favorites as well. The bluetooth is great, I can lookup a POI and the select to call that POI via cell phone with the bluetooth. The MSN direct is easy to use as well. The service will direct your route of travel around traffic. The gas listing I find useful as well. I am able to find what the best price is in my location and then get directions. The turn by turn is great, it tells you the street name and therefore you do not have to take your eyes off the road or guess which street if there are many close together. The only thing that I do not like about the unit is that I cannot have multiple locations selected for directions, say I was going on a trip and wanted to have multiple stops programmed, it would not be able to do it.Customer Review: Garmin c580

I really have enjoyed using this device when it is working. It is very user friendly with its various functions, but it has failed to turn on on several occasions and I have had to return it today for repair by Garmin. I must admit that Garmin has been very responsive to my problems and so I am hopeful that I will be back on the air quickly. However, it is disconcerting since I have had this unit only 3 weeks.
I hope this is just a glitch. I really do like the 580. It has worked well with my cell phone and it has guided me to a number of locations without a hitch. It is worthwhile to get use to it because there are more points of interest that you can access than I was aware of initially.
The 580 contains MSN direct which has been not consistent for me, perhaps because I live on the fringe of the coverage area. I would certainly check to see if you live in a coverage area before paying the extra bucks for a unit which provides the MSN direct option. It has not functioned yet for movie times and places, but weather, and gas prices has been right on. The verdict is still out on traffic.

This Garmin purchase was purely for fun. I drive less than 5 miles to work and don't tavel alot. Today I was going to a mall in Commerce. I had an idea of where I was going, but opted to use Garmin. On my way it indicated there would be a small delay. As I got closer the estimated time for the delay increased. After sitting in traffic, in an unfamilar area, for about 5 min. Garmin told me to exit. Then proceeded to reroute me around the clogged freeway. It brought me back on after the congestion was clear. I never would have got off on my own in that area.
We were planning a trip to Mexico, and always get lost returning. I thought a navigation system might help us. I actually bought the Mexico maps to go with. This is the first time we made it to the border on the first try. The Mexico maps could not look up POI's like the preprogrammed. Oh well.
The only draw back I have found, is the search. I'll use it instead of 411. I was looking for a restaurant I knew was there(for years). It could only find the chain 20 miles away. Not the one 2mi away. If that's my only complaint then all is good.

the product generally works well and does what it is supposed to do. I'm amazed at the general productivity and value generated by a GPS unit when it is working properly and wish I had gotten one sooner (this is my first).
However, I've found many defects in the GPS system, the mapping, and the MSN Direct service. MSN Direct basically has little to no signal power anywhere in the US, they have terrible coverage everywhere, and that is a problem as it is hard to get any MSN Direct features updated. I would value the MSN Direct Service at about $0.01. The maps are sometimes inaccurate, wrong, outdated, and/or just plain incorrect. I've found several routes and areas where the GPS is just plain wrong. The maps should be more accurate and the routing calculations should take into account accuracy. This is critical as I hate being led to the nearest station, only to find out the gas station no longer (or more likely) never existed in the first place.
I've been led astray a couple of times already, and I just bought it a couple of weeks ago. Not good.

This is my 3rd GPS..the 1st was a C320 which I still have and also a NUVI 200 that was either stolen or lost...in any event I was looking to replace the NUVI 200.
To be honest I was not impressed with any of the NUVI lines. I find the maps to contain way less information compared to the C line.
This is my first TTS GPS and to be honest it took some getting used to as the voice is not as clear as the standard Turn Right in 500 feet voice...but after a day or so it is no problem at all. In fact you can turn off the TTS if you prefer the regular prompts.
I had a real problem getting the Bluetooth to stay paired with my Blackberry Curve...doing some searching I was able to see that by upgrading the BT to the latest software on the GPS it stayed connected
MSN is pretty worthless other than a bell and whistle when it works...I won't be renewing it in a year
Great GPS for the money as this was Top of the Line for Garmin before the NUVI came out..if you don't need the slim GPS get this one
