Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Portable Friction Mount

Customer Review: Very sturdy and works well, but very BIG!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this dashboard mount for my Garmin GPS unit. When it arrived, I was impressed by the weight of it, and how much this base is gripping onto the dashboard even in tight corners or during sudden brakes, the unit held the GPS very well.

One thing I just did not expect is its size. I gave it five stars since this product functions well, and it is very well designed, but this base was too big for me. I have Honda CR-V and the dashboard is slightly curved and not very deep. When I had this mount, it was sort of obtrusive and the GPS was always in my view, which was a little annoying after a while. Also because of its size, it was very hard to hide or put away in the car. I put it under my seat, but it was very awkward.

In the end I bought another mount ARKON GARMIN NUVI AIR VENT MOUNT that gets installed on the air vent. That actually worked much better with my car (and it's much cheaper too), so I gave my friction mount to my friend, who loves it since his suction mount was losing its grip on the windshield. He says it's way better than suction mount...

Customer Review: really easy to set up and use.
Summary: 5 Stars

I justed pulled my Nuvi 660 off the window attachment, the ball just popped right out, then pushed it onto this ball. It works great, even has a lock/unlock, so you can slide the GPS out of the base easily, or lock it into place. It's easy to move the GPS to get just the right angle but it stays put once It's how I like it. I don't have too much trouble with the unit sliding around. I have a large, flat dash and if it were going anywhere, there's nothing to stop it, but it stays where I put it(I'm not a speeder and don't take turns sharper than I have to). As I live in California where I can't use the window attachment, I wish it would have come with this option. I wouldn't want to stick sticky tape on my leather dash. So far, I"m real happy with it.

UPDATE: After a month or so driving around with this thing on my dash, I'm as happy as ever. It hasn't moved at all, over pumps, up or down really steep hills, even with the power cord pulling on it (as I have it plugged into my cigarette lighter all the time). It's light enough and small enough to move easily and tuck away, it doesn't get in the way at all when I'm driving. I think it's perfect and I love it.

Customer Review: A Mount You Can Count On!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

At first I was very skeptical of a mount using what seem to be bags of sand to hold my Garmin nuvi 260W GPS in place on my Prius dash. After reading the reviews, I thought I would take a chance and order one from Amazon.com.
The mount turned out to be great! In one of the reviews, I was forewarned about the mount leaving a slight footprint. The writer of that review was correct a slight impression was left on my dash after each use. At first I used Armor All to get the footprint off my dash. I later tried something different, I cut a leftover piece of rubberized shelf liner that I had previously used in the kitchen. I placed the "bumpy side" down on the dash, then placed the mount on top of it. This worked great! The mount stays in place and no footprint to be found on the dash. I bought the roll of rubberized shelf liner from Wal-mart in the kitchen section. They even sell this shelf liner in different colors as well.
I would recommend this product to anyone considering a dash mount for their GPS. Also if you have a problem with a slight footprint then I would recommend that you try adding the padding to the dash then placing the mount on the pad.

Customer Review: Whoa, it works!
Summary: 5 Stars

Even after all the positive reviews for the friction mount, I was highly skeptical that it would stay on the dash of our Jeep Liberty. We had gone through two window mounts already, same as everyone else, the window mount is almost impossible to take off and put in another car as we like to do on occassion, and it leaves a nice ring of rubber behind. Also after you take it off and on a few times it becomes nearly useless.

So we decided to give the friction mount a try. The dash on our Jeep Liberty is not a real uniform area, the air vents jut up into the dash and the window vents are also right where you would put the mount so i felt like there wouldn't be a great surface for it to "grab" onto, but there is a decent little area where it could settle on.

So I put it on and attached our Nuvi. At first glance I was like "no way that thing is staying on there in a sharp turn." So I took the Jeep into an empty parking lot at night and proceeded to do a variety of very sharp turns in both directions. The mount didn't even move. Honestly it's almost like magic. Cool device and nice and easy to hide and move between cars.

Customer Review: Doesn't budge but may leave a mark
Summary: 3 Stars

I tested this in two different vehicles over 4 or 5 days and it didn't budge in either vehicle. Good marks for stability. If you've only used suction cup windshield mounts before with a GPS this product puts the GPS a lot closer to you, so you won't need to lean forward. Also, since it doesn't use a suction cup anywhere in the design of the product, this product will never drop your GPS on a hot day!

I wasn't thrilled with the cost, it seems a touch high for a beanbag and a plastic arm, but now I see that the arm mates to an adjustable pivot in the base and it is pretty well engineered.

Overall, this one is a keeper!

UPDATE:
After using this mount on my dash for a couple of weeks I decided the dash needed dusting. Once I cleaned off the dust I noticed that the mount had left a slight "stain" type mark on the dash. The color of the dash where the mount was had darkened enough to tell where the mount had been placed. I suspect plasticizers in the soft material on the bottom of the mount are migrating. I'll be VERY careful about leaving the mount on my dash for long periods of time!
