Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Portable Friction Mount

Customer Review: Stable mount and easy on/off for the Garmin Nuvi
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this item from Amazon with the initial purchase of a Nuvi 350 Unit (also reviewed) and have found it to be a very good add on. The bracket included with the Nuvi Unit allows for not only the ability to attach the unit but as well a place for power cord for the vehicle. Once attached to the bean bag friction mount it's a snap to attach or remove the Nuvi Unit. The mount holds steady in its place and does not seem to slide around with vehicle movement.

When mounting the bracket to the friction mount, do so prior to attaching the Nuvi GPS as it is a fairly tight fit and requires some force to snap in place. Once attached however, it really does not need to be removed as you can take the friction mount from vehicle to vehicle and seems adaptable to any dash I have thus far placed it on.

All, in all I would recommend this over the suction cup mount provided as it offers a much better alternative for keeping your Garmin Nuvi secure in its place.

One final suggestion, make sure you order the correct unit for your GPS. Some have ordered the friction mount not realizing that they have purchased just the platform minus the mounting stem. Amazon's # is 010-10908-00

Customer Review: Your GPS Will Take You Places, But This Friction Mount Ain't Goin' Nowhere!
Summary: 5 Stars

Garmin's portable friction mount is perfect, simply put. I've used it to keep my Nuvi at bay in my wife's Camry, my Ranger, and my work van. While my wife's car is used primarily for highway and city travel, my truck and my work van frequently find their way onto pothole-laden back roads, gravel roads, dirt roads and even in construction zones. My truck and van bounce all over the place and this friction mount doesn't move. The console on my van has numerous slots and open spaces for keeping work related items, and I often place my GPS over one of these holes with only the outer edges of the friction mount touching an actual surface. This doesn't prevent the mount from doing its job, though. It stays put for the long haul.

It has very solid construction, a locking mechanism to keep your GPS in place and can easily be taken off of your dash or (in the case of my van), the console and tucked out of the way so that potential thieves aren't tipped off to your possession of a GPS.

I highly recommend this friction mount for the simple fact that it does what it says it will do, and that's keep your GPS in sight when you need it and out of sight when you don't.

Customer Review: Works so well that I don't mind the bulk
Summary: 5 Stars

I live in an area where your car will definitely be broken into if there are suction cup marks from a GPS on your windshield or dash, so I purchased this to avoid having to constantly wipe things down. I saw this product, and though I was a little unsure of how well it would work, I gave it a try. I've been nothing but happy with this.

- Does not budge, even when I place it where my dashboard is sloped
- Didn't even move when I was rear-ended in traffic!
- The ability to readjust position instantly while drive it perfect, I can have it where it works for me to look at while driving, but I can ask my passenger to look something out and they just slide it to their side of the vehicle and then put it back when they are done
- No rings to clean up like I would have had from a suction mount
- No velcro or glue marks like a permanent mount, but just as sturdy
- A little bulky, but I just turn it upside down and slide it under my seat when I get out of the vehicle and that works fine (if you have a decent sized glove box or center console that's not already full it would fit there too if you just unclick the piece from each other

Would buy again!

Customer Review: Ugly, ugly, ugly
Summary: 1 Stars

I do not often disagree with the people who own, have evaluated items and submit reviews here. However, I must be the only one who finds this hurky, ugly and marginally useful bean bag thing for mounting a Garmin Nuvi to be awful.

Yes, it works as described and may solve a mounting problem for some people in some automobiles, but I just hated it as a practical matter when I tried to use it in my Toyota 4-Runner.

This huge glob of buck shot or whatever is packed in the base took up way too much room on my dashboard and was almost impossible to pack away in the car when not in use. It won't fit in a glove compartment or a console bin. I finally had to stuff mine under the seat in order to get it out of sight while I was away from my vehicle.

I just couldn't bring myself to using this thing and eventually just used the "sticky" mounting bracket that came with my Nuvi instead. I was trying to avoid that.

I thought of sending the Garmin Portable Friction Mount for Nuvi back, but decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Besides, someday I might need a huge unsightly paper weight or door stop with a funny plastic stalk on it.

Customer Review: It does what it's designed to do, and it does it well.
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased two of these, one for my nuvi750 and one for my wife's nuvi650. Simply put, these work perfectly, are very easy to use and are infinitely more convenient and practical than windshield mounts.

They are specifically designed for Garmin products. Unlike similar products from other manufacturers, they completely replace the suction cup mounting system. I've used other dash mounts that relied on the GPS suction cup mount, and they were terrible. With these, you remove your Garmin GPS from the suction cup mount at the 'ball & socket' connection and just plug the 'socket' on the GPS part of the mount into the 'ball' on this dash mount. (Then put the old suction cup mount away because you'll never need it again).

These are lighter and smaller than other dash mounts too, making them easier to stash under the front seat when I leave my car unattended in a parking lot. I know... you're saying that you can do that with a windshield mount too, but in that case you always have a telltale ring left on the windshield that alerts would-be theives that you migh have a GPS hidden in your car. There's nothing like that when you use this Garmin dash mount.
