Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Portable Friction MountCustomer Review: Efficient, Adaptable & Reliable Summary: 4 Stars
I own a 2005 Toyota RAV4 Ltd with CA State legal tints & a Garmin Nuvi 360. I would most definitely a 100% would highly recommend this to anyone who owns a Garmin Nuvi 360. The Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount is the most efficient, adaptable & reliable darn thing ever. Not only it's very easy to install, but also conspicuous to would be robbers. Not like after installing the windshield mounting kit that comes with the Garmin, even though you have meticulously taken out the Garmin each time you exit from your car. The mount would be very visible on the windshield, hence, the assumption that the portable Navigation gadget would be in the glove compartment. All you have to do is without efforts remove the connection to your auto's cigarette lighter, and then hide the whole thing (with the Garmin & portable dashboard mount together) behind passenger from seat. There's a "V" shape between the drivers side & the middle part of the dashboard, which the portable friction dashboard snug's in really well. Not only would it not move on sudden turns & abrupt stop n go, but the Garmin is at a very suitable location without abstracting your driving view. Note, here in SOCAL it's illegal to mount anything on any part of your windshield.
Customer Review: Remarkable product! Summary: 5 Stars
This is really an amazing product. Every now and then you come across a design that is elegant in its simplicity, and this is such a product and such a design.
It seems at first like it shouldn't really work, yet it does. Despite understanding the physics involved (like a high coefficient of static friction of the rubbery bottom side), my intuition kept expecting the nuvi to take a dive when the car cornered or stopped suddenly or accelerated. It never budges!
Here in California, we're not supposed to stick the suction mount on a window. In one of our cars there was just no good spot to mount the little disc as an alternative suction mount location, so we bought this guy. It has four little flexible sand bag lobes that conform nicely to the curvy dash in my wife's car (the curviness being why the disc wouldn't work). And since this just sits there by friction, you can take it right out to hide or move to another car, leaving no visible evidence to a potential thief that you even have a GPS unit.
If I have anything resembling a complaint, it's that $25 to $30 seems a bit steep for what's essentially a sandbag and a piece of plastic, but it's so brilliantly executed that I really don't care!
Customer Review: Finally, a product that will hold up my Nuvi! Summary: 5 Stars
Well, we'd tried everything else with no luck for our Nuvi 360. We used the suction cup mount (should be sucktion cup) on the windshield and it would always break the seal while driving. It would never stay up for more than a couple of days. We also tried it using the dash-mount plate that was provided and it failed similarly.
Enter the Garmin Bean Bag. This product works great. It stays where you put it. You can drive like a maniac and it still stays there. It's a great purchase.
The drawbacks are: It is a bit clunky so you lose a bit of that sex-appeal that came with buying a Nuvi. Shame on Garmin for not providing a quality mount kit in the box. For the $800+ they charge on some of their products, you'd think they could figure out how to mount it.
Also, they only included the beanbag and the arm that holds the Nuvi. They didn't include the part that connects to the Nuvi and swivels around. This makes it difficult to move the Nuvi from car to car, short of taking the entire beanbag.
I'd recommend this product to anyone with a Nuvi. I'm not really crazy about it (looks, ergonomics) but it does work flawlessly and seems to be the only solution available.
Customer Review: Glad we bought it! Summary: 4 Stars
My husband and I did alot of research before buying the Garmin portable friction dashboard mount. We wanted something that would definitely stay on the dashboard and not move around AT ALL! Being in the state of California we couldn't consider one mounted on the windshield.
The Garmin portable mount is true to its word. I was a bit skeptical at first seeing only having seen it online, but when we tried it out, we were very happy with its performance. The mount makes for easy installation and can handle the weight of a higher-end model navigation system. You can place it anywhere on the dashboard, and however close you are comfortable with keeping it. The beans make it very sturdy. The material is easy to care for and soft to the touch on the bottom so your dashboard is safe from being scratched. Besides, it doesn't take up much space and looks pretty trendy just sitting there. It fits well into the space on the navigation system and doesn't interfere with your MSN direct service either. The bigger advantage is that you can dismantle it easily and store it just about anywhere or even carry it with you in your bag. This ranks better than having an in-built or mounted GPS that especially keeps burglars away!
Customer Review: quick GPS mount! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great product; anyone who owns a Nuvi GPS device, should get this one too; it'll make your life so much easier :). It's very sturdy and sits firmly and stably on the dash board. The weight of the GPS unit doesn't make it wobbly or unstable at all. You can take it out quickly and just place it on the car dashboard and it stays there! No need to mount it up on the windshield through air suction, which can be risky if you are driving and if there's no passenger in the car to help you mount the unit. Also, like the air suction ones, it doesn't leave dirt marks on the windshield! This one is easy to put up and when you are done, just take out the GPS unit and store it away. Sometimes, if I am in hurry, I store it away with the GPS unit attached with it! It's very portable as well. if you have two cars and one GPS system (like me) and need to transfer it back and forth, you would love this. Just grab it from one car and take it to another car. No need to rent a GPS unit with your rental cars anymore!!!!
It looks a little bulky but that doesn't bother me specially given the convenience, ease of use, and the price. I will buy it again if I ever need a GPS mount. Highly recommended.
