Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin MapSource City Navigator, North America DVD-ROM for Garmin StreetPilot GPS UnitsCustomer Review: Garmin Mapsource Summary: 4 Stars
This was not my first Garmin MapSource purchase, so I knew what to expect.
The software was up to date for the part of NY where I was staying. Looking at other states which I know, it all looked fine.
Apart from the eternal difficulty of getting the unlock procedure right, in spite of calls and emails to both Garmin USA and Garmin Europe, it was up and running after only a week.
Moving data from and to my Garmin GPSMap 60C worked well. Moving maps is time consuming (about 15 mins, but I'm used to that.)
It's good kit, but you need a fairly long fuse sometimes.
Customer Review: Solid piece of software Summary: 4 Stars
My previous Garmin had a base map loaded, but it couldn't be upgraded, so this was the first time I had to expand my new Map60CSX's awareness. The registration/activation was unexpected (how do people not connected to the web deal with this?), but uneventful.
The interface has some oddities in form, but not to the point where it won't function properly. The search for an address still strikes me as disjointed compared to my DeLorme products. I'd also like to see the option of renaming/removing points of interest that have either been renamed or removed (restaurants, hotels, gas stations, etc.).
Customer Review: You'll never be lost again Summary: 4 Stars
I originally purchased the GPS to use with my jet ski with the option to use it for navigtion around town as a secondary function. However this software coupled with the portable GPSMAP series is an incredible combo worth far more then the dedicated units. It lets you create waypoints and routes very easy - however the "find an address" capability requires too much exactness. I find that I have to use google maps first to help downselect an area and then use some of that info to get an accurate hit on an address. Overall it is very easy to transfer data to and from the GPS units with this package.
Customer Review: MapSource Maps for Auto Navigation Summary: 3 Stars
Very complete set of maps and reasonably current. Was very helpful in Hawaii where road names seem to be optional sometimes. To load the entire set you need a 2 GB memory card. With a 1 GB card I can load West and central US or central and east. Took two atemptes to get the data in the Garmin... but once it is there everything is good. No Mac software, PC only and there are less expensive maps in the world but because it is a Garmin you have to pay twice as much as other places for the PROPRITARY MapSource FORMAT. Could be 4 stars if the price and PC only versions were not factors for you.
Customer Review: Works great and is very detailed Summary: 5 Stars
After you get over the disappointment that your Garmin GPS unit is useless without extra mapping software, you break down and buy City Navigator.
City Navigator is better than and replacing city select and metro guide.
I have a GPSMAP 60CSX with a 1 gig micro sd card. I can only fit about 3/4 of the US on my 1 gig card, so in the future I might buy the 2 gig card, but for now I'm not planning any cross country road trips. The maps are perfect and supply tons of info.
As of 10/16/06 the latest version of City Navigator is V8.0 That is what I was shipped.
