Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin MapSource City Navigator, North America DVD-ROM for Garmin StreetPilot GPS Units

Customer Review: amazing, life changing product for our family
Summary: 5 Stars

After our first road trip, I pretty much abandoned all use of conventional maps in favor of City Navigator. It's really nice to let the computer worry about finding a route and dealing with missed turns, while you go along for the ride and enjoy the view. And amazingly enough, if I give my husband directions that are backed up by City Navigator, he actually listens to me! (And yes, my directions were almost always correct before...)

We run it on the Garmin eTrex Vista Cx with 1GB SD expansion card. I had to upgrade the eTrex firmware to use City Navigator v8 and MapSource Topo North America without crashing when I entered the map setup info page, but it wasn't too hard to figure out how from the Garmin website.

This system works great if you have 2 people in the car, for solo travel the eTrex screen is too small to read while driving.

Customer Review: Excellent product but sneaky Garmin
Summary: 5 Stars

I can see why people are POed about this. I am giving this 5 stars based on the quality of the product, because it is very nice, and not for the sneaky marketing schemes of Garmin, which would get -5 in my book. The base map that comes with a Garmin GPS is rubbish. Not just with respect to it not having any city streets but even the lakes are all deformed and inaccurate. While motoring out of our dock the GPS showed us going over land! City navigator fixed all this and it quite impressive. So ... this software is an ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE if you are going to buy a Garmin Mapping GPS. This is something that Garmin neglects to advertise since they know you will have to buy the mapping software once you bought the GPS. Luckily I paid half retail for my GPS unit so I am not quite as ticked. The software unlock process is unnecessarily absurd as well.

Customer Review: Mapquest in the palm of your hand
Summary: 4 Stars

I wanted to include a "My House" map with the pointer at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC, but I couldn't get a screen capture.

I loaded as many maps as I could fit in my eTrex, and I'm amazed at how up to date the maps are. There are businesses on the map that weren't even built until recently.

One of the things I enjoy doing with it is to plot a route to a place I know well, and then take a different route. The eTrex calculates a new route quite quickly, but it sometimes takes a little while to convince it I am NOT going to make a U-turn.

The software on the computer is not quite as friendly. The routing tool hangs on to the mouse pointer and that sometimes results in unintended waypoints.

Good GPS software and almost good computer software.

Customer Review: 1 star as purchased, 4 stars after updating all the software
Summary: 1 Stars

Be careful when you buy items like this online. The price looked good, but the product (shipped from another vendor that sells through Amazon) was not as expected. We bought this software in December 2006 and received a 2003 version that did not work.

We had to get expert help to figure out what was wrong, and then had to update absolutely everything from the Garmin web site. This took quite a bit of time, but finally we were able to use the software with our GPS.

The user interface is old-fashioned (we are Mac users, so we're spoiled). Each installation of a new map, no matter how small, appears to overwrite everything else on the GPS memory card. If there's a way to add maps without erasing old ones, which there should be, we haven't figured it out yet.

Customer Review: Garmin holds you over an expensive barrel!
Summary: 3 Stars

While I like the Garmin GPS I have (the extrex venture cx), I don't like being forced to spend over $100 more to buy a local map coverage DVD. I think I read in another review that Microsoft's Pocket Streets won't work on a Garmin GPS, but I had to try it for myself and find out it doesn't. (Pocket Streets does work on my Navman GPS/PDA combo that I have). I actually prefer Pocket Streets to this Garmin software, even though the turn by turn option and distance calculator aren't available. The distance calculations seem to be quite a ways off in terms of mileage anyway though. On a good note, this Garmin software does have the address and phone numbers and offers navigation to points of interest in this software.
