Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Map Update 2008 City Navigator for North America NT (010-10989-00 and 010-10989-50)Customer Review: Garmin GPS Software Summary: 5 Stars
The software is very good. We've used the Garmin unit in many of the United States and Hawaii with excellent results. In some of our larger cities with the numerous mult-freeway interchanges, the Garmin was a God-send. The dynamic screen with 3-D view is also helpful. Only minor down-sides are if you program the unit in a garage, you must wait until you are outside for the satellites to link up. This can be a problem if you have to decide your route immediately upon exiting the garage, like at an airport with a rental car. Doing the update was fine except you have to have it plugged in to update the software. In my case, this meant in my car using my laptop. Other than those two minor issues, it works very good. By the way, it has features that my Lexus LS GPS doesn't have, like the estimated time of arrival updated by your speed versus the number of minutes using pre-programmed speeds by highway type in the Lexus. Very nice feature.
Customer Review: It sucks less in some ways Summary: 2 Stars
I have a Garmin 2730 with XM and NavTraffic, and updated the software for the unit some time ago prior to this software and map update.
The latest software for the 2730 this update insists on installing is terrible. It loses satellite connections constantly, and now routes you directly to the nearest traffic jam before getting you on to your destination. It then warns you with "slow traffic in 22,335 miles."...
The map updates is necessary, although incomplete. This being said, if 80% of the million+ changes to the roads are included, and they fixed some of their points of interest, then it's still worth the $70 price tag.
One of the things I wish they would fix is the WAAS encoding for the Washington DC area - the unit often places you on the I95 HOV lanes when you're not, and are in fact more than 7m/22 feet away, and then asks you to do U turns (on the highway) to get you to an exit.

I have used this product extensivlely in NC & SC. There were a large number of errors and road changes on the old mapping software that I was sure would be updated on the new maps. Many roads that have been completed for 3 years are still not changed. Example Locust NC seems to not have a grocery store any gas stations, banks, or fast food resteraunts, these have been in place for years. Bottom line Garmin has done a very very poor job of updating this map save your money your old maps ae just as good. I have not found even one update in North and South Carolina. Also I use Karen the Austrlian english voice prompt on my 2720 and was suprised to find when you need to turn on a Drive ( Dr.) the voice says Doctor or for street (St.) she says Saint this is pretty pathtic that this got by all the design and editing departments and still no corrections. Garmin and navteq have a long way to go to have a first rate product.
Customer Review: Garmin Map Update 2008 Summary: 1 Stars
I'm a truck driver who has driven over 250,000 miles in 42 of the 48 lower states in 2 plus years. I have a Garmin 330c streetpilot and had purchased the 2008 update 6 months ago thinking it would of course...update. It was and is a major disappointment. It was a waste of money and I would not recommend it to anyone. Roads that I have known to have been built and have been in use for over 4 years are not on the update. I have emailed Garmin(4 months ago) asking for a response and as of yet have not been contacted. It was my conclusion and after reading reviews from others I now know that this "update" is not at all an update, so by all means save your money. However after many conversations with other drivers I do believe that Garmin is the leader in GPS navigation and would purchase a Garmin again, but would be very leary of any map update.
Customer Review: Get this update for Houston, Texas. Summary: 4 Stars
My wife gave me a Garmin nuvi for Christmas, 2006. Included with the unit was a map database that did not reflect the western end of the Westpark Tollway here in Houston, Texas. Installing this update, which took almost one hour, gave me an accurate representation of the entire Westpark Tollway.
The bonus was that my traffic-conditions subscription, to which I got a short trial with original activation of the nuvi, has been renewed -- although for how long I do not know. Seeing a traffic-alert icon on my nuvi's screen was a nice surprise last week when I was driving on the north side of downtown Houston, trying to reach the southwest side of the city. I touched the icon, got two alerts, told the nuvi to navigate around the biggest traffic problem, and avoided most of the bad traffic that evening.
