Customer Review: Do Not Buy Garmin Map Updates
Summary: 1 Stars

Garmin is still the leader in car GPS devices in the US. I own two units, a Street Pilot 2820 fixed in my car, and a Nuvi 680 which I take with me on my frequent business trips. I bought the 2008 updates but could see no difference. None of the new roads in my area had been added and the mistakes I've noticed (mislabeled roads, illegal turns) have not been fixed. I was only allowed to update one unit with the CD, even though both units are registered with My Garmin. I became really angry when my Street Pilot was stolen, and even though I reported the unit and serial number stolen to Garmin to prevent the thieves trying to update it, Garmin still would not let me install the Maps on my Nuvi! So the thieves have both my GPS and Garmin is letting them keep my $60 map updates.
I will not be replacing my GPS with a new Garmin as I had hoped. With this kind of customer service I'm going to wait for something better to come along. Garmin still make the best hardware, but the software is becoming a real let down.

Customer Review: Nuvi 350 Map Update 2008
Summary: 3 Stars

I had difficulty downloading the program on my own computer running Windows XP. The update failed several times (and it takes a good 1-1/2 to 2 hours to download). I had to get a friend to try it on their computer and fortunately it worked but still took 1-1/2 hours.

I haven't noticed a huge improvement on the map feature. Some roads that have been renamed 15-20 years ago are still listed by their previous name. There does seem to be a more current listing of Food, Hotels, and Fuel stops on the software. I really enjoy taking trips with my NUVI. I no longer have to rely on paper maps or stop and ask directions on every corner. I have used it enough to trust that it will get me either on the doorsteps or close enough to see my destination without depending on an old atlas or folding map. The software update was going for $200 but the new version for about $50-$60 which seemed like a bargain I'm not real sure it improved my existing program enough to justify doing it again.

Customer Review: WARNING

HORRIBLE TECH SUPPORT. I bought my Nuvi 660 in August, 2007. In May, 2008 I bought the Map Update 2008 disk from Amazon. It would not install on my Nuvi, and I got an error message saying that I had no map installed, and therefore I could not update. The message said "Contact Garmin Customer Support." After searching through many screens on the Garmin website I found the telephone number for Customer Support. After waiting on hold for 20 minutes, I got a customer support person who had no idea what was wrong. He said that I must speak with a Level Two support person. Unfortunately, the wait for the Level Two person was more than one hour. I hung up and sent an e-mail asking for support. Two days later I received the reply that the 2008 map was already installed on my Nuvi. Question: Why didn't the error message say this? Why didn't the tech support person know this simple answer? Why doesn't Garmin employ enough tech support people to service their customers? I'm disgusted.

Customer Review: ANOTHER GARMIN RIPOFF
Summary: 1 Stars

I'm from Canada but travel into the south eastern states quite a bit. I own the StreetPilot C330 and wanted to update my maps. I started the installation process and the factory installed maps were deleted (no problem, the manual says you can revert to the factory installed maps anytime). Then the installer gives you 2 options; install the continental USA or Canada and the states that border Canada. No where on the package do they tell you this. So I contact Garmin, guess what they don't support the original map software for my Garmin anymore, so despite what the manual says, I can't revert to the old software.
What's the solution? Install the US maps and buy an SD card for the maps of Canada for another $80 bucks. What a deal I'd have $180.00 into a GPS device that Garmin doesn't make anymore, whose map software is already extinct and that Garmin will likely stop providing support for in the near future.
As another reviewer said "save your money for a new GPS instead".

Customer Review: Full of Errors & Out of date already
Summary: 1 Stars

This map is dated 2008 but it does not include changes to major roads that happened in 04, 05, & 06! It did fix a few errors on the old map that really annoyed me, so it is somewhat of an improvement. I would guess that I went from 35% of my trips having a major error to 25% having a major error. One of the most common problem is not showing a road as one-way. Another is the map shows roads as connected when they aren't since one road is a bridge over the other one. Another common problem is service roads near a freeway. The GPS isn't even 50% accurate on those, (even worse in Texas). And that's in cities, don't get me started about all the errors in rural regions.

The POI database is really frustrating as well. Nothing like being in an unfamiliar city and asking for the closest KFC & being sent 5 miles & later finding out there was one 2 blocks away that isn't in the database!

My advice is to save your money & wait for something better to come along.
