Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Map Update 2008 City Navigator for North America NT (010-10989-00 and 010-10989-50)Customer Review: Maybe, maybe not Summary: 4 Stars
The update arrived last night and I loaded it into my Garmin c330. The time it took was not that bad, it only took about 45 minutes but couldn't load everything because the c330 does not have enough memory. I tried it today and the addresses that were missing in the v8 version are still missing in the 2008 version but it did speed up in finding the satellite signals that it needs and the directions are more accurate with the update. In an email from Gramin, "Thank you for contacting Garmin International, You only need to update if you are having issues finding local Points of Interests or when you are traveling. Also, misguided directions while on highways and interstates." Update 4/16/08 I have used this new updated version for a while now and am not very happy with it. Sometimes it gets me to where I want to go and then a few weeks later if I have to go to the same place it takes me to somewhere blocks away. I still have to keep paper maps in my car in case this thing gets me lost. On a positive note, Garmin did send me an SD card for the data that could not be loaded directly to the unit. If you buy an update, don't expect it to cover every single city, read the packaging as I found out too late that they only update certain cities. I'm lowering my original star rating to three because of my experiences with it. If those of you who have more expensive units, I'm not sure how it will do on yours. Mine is the c330 as we know that electronic stuff can differ from unit to unit.
6/6/08 UPDATE!!! I finally took this on a real test and took a 400 mile trip to southern California. As a warning to someone thinking of buying this, it only works correctly half the time. For a system that is nationwide, it should have an adequate update instead of just a few cities and freeways. I took 99 south and there were times when the system said I was not driving on roadways and if I had to pull off for gas or food, even though I saw the freeway on ramp right there, the system was telling me to take a dead end. I also took a trip to the Bay Area and when I went over a bridge it showed that I was on water. Exercise caution when using this system. On a positive note, if it's updated, it will get you where you want to go but please keep a map with you of where you are going.
Customer Review: You can skip out on this update Summary: 2 Stars
Pros: Some updates to local roads and extra POIs that were not there before.
Cons: Missing major Interstate and local roadwork that has been in process or complete around for a year.
Overall: I'm using the NT Update 2008 map with a Nuvi 660 in the Los Angeles, CA area. We've had completed major extensions of the interstate system (downtown and other areas) and major road alterations that have been in the works for years and they still do not show up on the maps or navigation. One bypass that I travel on frequently never showed up. The land that was originally where my company was at before is still showing up as my company, even though there are residential housing projects popping up there (El Segundo/LAX area). POIs are hit and miss. While it seems to show catering services run from people's houses, it doesn't show the old McDonald's that has been on in the local shopping center for years. At least for Los Angeles it's not really worth upgrading from V8. It should have been a clue that there are no specific changes or dates listed in the ads or packaging.
Note: This DVD is labeled on the package as a map upgrade for ONE Garmin GPS. Once you enter the unlock code on the back of the jewel case, it will associate the map code with your Garmin via the internet. So you can't just purchase one DVD map and also install it on your buddy's Garmin. Worse thing is that when you update the map, it takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to update this thing. I tried to defragment my GPS afterwards to make it run faster, but it wouldn't let me defragment the 998 MB worth of map data!
Not worth it!
Customer Review: City Navigator V8 update for Street Pilot i5 Summary: 1 Stars
I've had my Street Pilot i5 for 2 years now so I decided it would be a good idea to get the 2008 upgrade software, City Navigator V8. It took over an hour to download but that wasn't a big issue. My disappointment was as I started the download I got a message that "the internal memory in your unit isn't large enough to load the complete software, choose either Canada and the bordering states or the continental US". Living in New Hampshire made these option a disappointment because we've planned a trip to Canada this summer and also plan on going to North Carolina. I chose the continental US option. I then attempted to enter my son's address in North Carolina and it doesn't exist. The area he lives had been established in1999-2008. So much for a "2008 upgrade"!! I also have a friend in the next town down from us that was established in 2003-2004 and it's not in there. I used it today for the 1st time with the new software for a trip to Massachusetts. It took approximately 10 minutes to find the satellites, previously it never took more than a few minutes. As I came off the exit ramp for my destination, it said to take a right turn and the end of the ramp but the red line on the screen showed a left turn. I had been here before so I knew it was a left turn. Bottom line is don't waste your money on this upgrade, it was no improvement on my i5 and I feel that maybe the original software was better. I wish I had read some of the reviews on this before buying it because I see many similar experiences.
Customer Review: I love my Garmin but maps needed update Summary: 2 Stars
Easy to install from the DVD; just followed the steps. No hassle at all. Didn't take long.
My c330 GPS out of the box had 2006 maps preloaded. They were becoming out of date. I called Garmin in June, Garmin said the 2008 update would be out in Sep 2007; I waited and ordered it from Amazon, price was good. It arrived quickly. But I have been quite disappointed with the new map function.
I live in Albuquerque,N.M. maybe they just didn't get out here to update. It seems to have trouble finding addresses, restaurants, movies and worse, a free standing Post Office that's been here over 3 years. We've had Costco for 10 yrs. there are three in town, the nearest it found was 276 miles away. Several places of business developed over 2 years ago are not in. Fairly new POIs don't yet show up. Upgrade still does not have the newer streets or businesses. The unit has misdirected me several times to places that no longer exist or perhaps were contemplating a location change and never made the move. I'm curious to see the lists of new streets added.
I love its portability and easy to use screen and system. I have a suction mount and take it travelling. Near Orlando recently, I was misdirected to a NASA visitor station.
I love my Garmin, but updating to this version is not necessary. I'd hold off buying this upgrade now if I could do it again. They need a better more accurate update. Not sure I'll spend the money again next year.
Customer Review: The Only Product I've Ever Returned To Amazon! Summary: 1 Stars
As I write this review, the Garmin Map Navigator 2008 Update is on its way back to Amazon for a refund. Before ordering, I checked to make sure it was compatible with my Garmin GPS -checking my model number carefully. It supposedly was.
When I received the product I was instucted to load Garmin drivers -no problem there. Then the fun began...
As I tried to load the program, I was instructed almost immediately that it couldn't be loaded because my GPS was "missing a prior map." Since this progam was supposed to be compatible, I'm not sure how that is possible. Obviously, the product was misrepresented. I was instructed to notify Garmin in Kansas. which I plan to do. NOTE: when I plugged in my GPS all of my saved destinations had been wiped out ( I know they are easy to replace; it's just the principle of the thing.) However, HOME became KANSAS. That would have been fine if I didn't live outside of Philadelphia, PA !! That was not an easy problem to solve. It took about an hour to figure out how to make the correction.
By the way, as a warning to anyone considering purchasing this product,my Garmin GPS is a StreetPilot c340 - it states right on the Garmin Map Update 2008 that it is compatible. It also lists many other models. Unless you want to join Dorothy and Toto in Kansas I wouldn't take the chance!
