Customer Review: Needs a redesign
Summary: 1 Stars

I'm a big and long time fan of Garmin fitness equipment. I have 2 Forerunner 305's, an Edge 305 and a 310XT. I love' em all. I love both forms of heartrate straps. I'm very happy with the new version of Garmin Connect that is a great free service. Garmin is also excellent with customer service.

On the other hand this cadence device is the worst piece of Garmin equipment I have ever experienced. I bought two as I can move the Edge 305 between bikes. Set up is not all that difficult. The problem is keeping the things working. The longest I've been able to get one to work is a month and I've had two for going on two years.

Lately even with new batteries I can get the green light that checks to make sure that the magnet on the crank arm is making magenetic contact with the unit to flash when the bike is in the stand but not when I'm actually riding the bike. Keep in mind you use 2032's and those batteries get expensive to switch out every month. I could see if only one was having issues but both are and so I'm thinking design issues are at play.

The only thing I can say positive about this unit is that since it has worked so rarely that I have developed my own sense of cadence so I really don't need it. On the other hand I'm a gearhead (just in case you couldn't tell) and it drives me nuts that I've paid good money for these things and they simply don't work worth a damn.

Save your money and take a pass until Garmin redesigns this unit.

Customer Review: Garmin GSC 10 Sensor Review
Summary: 5 Stars

Very easy to install and configure. As of this date I have not yet calibered this against a know accurate piece/sensor. I will be doing a check on how accurate the sensor is when I put the sensor on my other trainer bike, as for now I'm just using the sensor on my other bike, the one I needed to ride and shake the dust off of.
That being said, the sensor is easy to use and with the Garmin 405, the readings, at least, appear consistent. One of the responses asked was waterproof, since I have only used this indoors, still too much snow to use the road bike outside, I can't comment on this.

All in all, the sensor is easy to use, consistent in it's read outs and seems pratical as I continue using this sensor when I start riding outside. For the price a very good and practical deal.

I might add that I bought 2 of these one each for the road bikes I most often ride, for my fun rides I'll just keep using the old Cateye. In addition, given the 405's battery life while using the GPS, I'm hoping the sensor will help track my longer 100+ miles rides without the Garmin shutting down. Numerous times a season I'll do a 24 hr ride or a 200+ mile ride and I'm hoping the sensor will give me the feedback I need and the Garmin on battery a longer time.

Regards,

Bill

Customer Review: Good Accessory For My Garmin Forerunner 305
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had my Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver With Heart Rate Monitor for awhile now and have only used it for running events. I recently purchased a road bike and bought this to track my bike workouts.

Installation was easy to understand. All the components are held in place with "zip ties" which makes it easy. We had no difficulty getting the sensors to align. The product is small and lightweight, so unless you are worried about ounces added to your bike weight (if you are, you're probably buying an expensive cycle computer), it does not add appreciable weight or bulk. After installation, you turn on your Forerunner and tell it that you have now installed the sensor (consult your Forerunner instruction booklet) and it immediately picked it up. That's all there is to it. You are then able to monitor pedal cadence and speed of your ride.

I would absolutely recommend this if you already have a Forerunner 305 and now want to monitor bike workouts.

Customer Review: great addition to my Garmin watch
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this to compliment my Garmin FR60 watch. I wanted to be able to track my bike rides along with my swims and runs. Since my watch is not as easy to read while riding, I kept my regular bike computer as well. The installation was fairly easy with one exception... To get the crank sensor in the right spot, I had to custom make a wedge to position it correctly. Luckily for me, I'm a woodworker as well and had some scrap black plastic I was able to machine into the right shape. I'm assuming here that my situation is not unique and they should include something that accomodates this.

The accuracy on this is very good. This could be I need to figure out how to use it, but... it'll go to sleep if you come to a stop. For example, I stopped during a 50 miler for a bathroom break and another ride I stopped to fix a flat. Both times, the unit (or my watch) went into sleep mode and I lost data for the remainder of the ride.

Overall it is a great product that, once I figure out the sleep issue, fits the bill for what I need.

Customer Review: Works, but not great
Summary: 3 Stars

This is actually the 4th sensor I own, this one is replacing one of the 3 I own that quit working. I have a total of 3 sensors on 3 different bikes. I originally wanted to use these on the bike to give me cadence, but never have had good luck with getting that to work consistently or at all with my FR305. What I do use these for is riding the trainer inside PLUS it helps stabilize the speed of the garmins outside. The FR305 without this has a tendency to be flaky with calculating speed outside on a bike, these units seem to help.
Its not a great product, but it does work most of the time. Battery life is fair at best, but the cr2032 watch batteries are cheap.
I have owned 2 FR305 units, my first came apart on a bike ride and was ko'd by a car. They are pretty decent, and work well with running in clear skies. Although they also have issues, I did replace it when it was ko'd, the information I receive 95% of the time was worth purchasing another, plus I can move it from bike to bike to my arm when I run or hike.
