Customer Review: Love this Unit
Summary: 5 Stars

Pros: Works great, sensitive receiver which gets signal inside my house where my Nuvi won't, good battery life, interface is easy to understand and logical, tough enough to survive mounting on a snowmobile (Garmin might not recommend it but that's how I use it)

cons: be aware that to make unit useful you will have to add at least one map at about $80 as whether you are on or off road the local roads are probably your best location reference and these are not on the included basemap so you will want to add either the Topo or road map (both include local streets but only the street map has data for turn by turn routing on roads) also the included microsd card is laughably small, add a 2 GB microSD card which is less than $10 at Amazon, saves 20 tracks at 500 points each (the current track can have up to 10,000 points and those can be saved on the SD card but the saved tracks get cut down to 500 points though they seem to maintain good accuracy) where Garmins new units can save 20 at 10,000 points each, not really a big problem but if you want to save the tinyest details of large tracks it might matter to you

Not really a con but for a bit more you can get the latest and greatest from Garmin which has a big beautiful display and works well also, if you want a newer unit and are into cold weather sports like me consider the Colorado over the Oregon as I have read that the touch screen on the Oregon doesn't work well in the cold, I've used the Colorado and it works great as well

I think its to early for a good review on my part. I am a fire fighter with a volunteer organization that uses the Etrex Legend. So I am familiar with that and the Vista HCx in which my paid department has. I learned that with the sensativity on these units from a vehicle they need to be close to the dash window. Knowing that helped me decide on going with the 60Cx with its higher sensitivity. I have to state that its much better as it will pick up sats in the middle of my truck, from inside the house and within our large steel roofed apparatus stalls. I did eventually lose the signal when I went into our sleeping area, which is block walls and concrete second level with metal roof above. Of course your not going to use it there but I wanted to see just how good it was. Pretty impressed with the other area's as stated above. Having the altimeter and area calculations is most helpful with wildland fire fighting as far as orienting and figuring size and location of a fire. Haven't used the 60Cx yet, but I'm sure it will happen soon. I also like the fact that you can use rechargable batteries in the unit. Maybe at a later date after I use the 60Cx hunting this fall I can give more info on the unit. I really can't give it a 5 rating yet, but expect that I probably can in the not so distant future. Hope this helps you making a decision. The price going thur amazon beat two other large outdoor/hunting retail stores. It pays to shop around! Thanks Amazon

Customer Review: See Through Trees!
Summary: 4 Stars

The SiRF chipset in this baby is amazing. I've been using it for a week now and here are some examples:

Oldgrowth Douglas-fir forest, trees 200 ft tall, 90% canopy closure - GPS gets 8 satellites and has my position to 10 m accuracy in about a minute.

Doghair western hemlock forest 100% canopy closure, need a flash to take pictures at noon on a cloudless day. GPS gets 7 satellites and has my position to 10 m accuracy in a little under two minutes.

Dense alder-maple forest at the bottom of a ravine with 70% sideslopes. 95% canopy closure. GPS gets 6 satellites and has my position to 10 m accuracy in about a minute. I put the GPS in the top pocket of my backpack and thrash through the ravine for 3 hours. Subsequent download indicates GPS never lost my position and has almost no random walk component to the trackpoint record.

In short, the SiRF set delivers performance that I could not achieve using a $14,000 Trimble setup three years ago. GPS is finally into the woods. I wonder how it would work in a cave???

By the way - in other respects it's pretty much what you expect of a Garmin GPS, which means great hardware and a pretty good user interface, coupled with crappy software that only runs on Windows. At least you can use Mapsource to save the tracks, routes and waypoints as GPX files which you can then view on Google Earth.

Customer Review: Out of the box, this thing rocks!

Ok.. here's the deal. I've been an avid Magellan user for the past 3 years. I love my Magellan. I've never liked the Garmins because of their clumsy interface (the buttons placed above the display NEVER made sense to me) and how the menu structure was built.

However.... We're planning a 2000 mile road trip from Utah up to the Oregon coast. We needed something with expandable memory so we could upload more than one state map at a time. My wife bought me the Magellan eXplorist 600 for Fathers Day. I forced myself to use it for two days (and believe me, it was torture). I could go on and on about why I sent it back.
What I ordered as a replacement was the GPSMap 60Cx. Now keep in mind that I felt like someone who had turned to the dark side.
I couldn't be happier with my decision.

While I agree with most of the other reviews about the lack of base maps, and the expense of additional ones, this unit ROCKS! It acquires satellites within seconds. It has expandable memory. It has a color screen. It manages Geocaches. It auto-routes. It stores 1000 waypoints. It has SiRF Technology. It is a USB interface. It has a belt clip. It changes display contrast at night (automatically). It slices... It dices....
Suddenly the Dark Side isn't so dark!!

This is a great unit that I would recommend to anyone.

Customer Review: Excellent GPS Unit!

This is my second Garmin unit. The first was a GPS Map 76 which served me very well both on the water and on the road. Unfortunately, I believe I damaged the unit by using an inferior power adapter (word to the wise- buy the Garmin accessories). I decided to replace the 76 with the 60CX and am I ever glad that I did! Although the basemap is crap and you have to spend money on Garmin maps, I can't be mad at them as this is their business model. Fortunately, the fishing hotspots map set that I have for the 76 works beautifully on the 60CX which is saving me from buying another map set (for a while at least). The 60 CX does everything I could ever want in a GPS. It receives satellite connections super fast and it works everywhere in the house- even the basement! The unit is very easy to operate right out of the box and the battery life is superb ( and I did buy Garmin's power adapter for the truck)! I've been using the unit for hours over the past 4 days and still have plenty of power remaining! I really like the fact the you can get turn by turn directions (although it's always best to verify those directions ahead of time). I've also been able to load thousands of points of interest using Garmin's POI loader. I could not be happier with this purchase and look forward to using the 60 CX for years to come!
