Customer Review: This thing is the best!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had my Garmin now for 3 weeks. I took it with me to Missouri for Thanksgiving and planned out an entire route with waypoints and everything. It displays estimated time of arrival, mileage, and direction to each waypoint, and the info is updated every second. It is very accurate (I always get good reception from at least 5-6 satellites), and features like speed and altitude are right on the money. Exit information was helpful and accurate, and I used it to find gas stations that I wanted. I also bought a cigarette lighter adapter (for unlimited power) and a car mount. The indiglo feature was extremely useful for the road at night. I can't wait to take it overseas next summer on my tour to Germany with the Air Force. I am definitely buying the CDs so I can download European maps and U.S. topo information. I love this gadget. I find that I am acting a lot like the guy on the Amazon commercial....

Customer Review: One of the best GPS's on the market
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had the GPS III+ for well over a year now and it has been an excellent performer at a good value. The mapping capability is a definite plus and the screen is very easy to see. I wouldn't pay the extra money for a color GPS. I bought the Map Source software, which increases the capability quite a bit. Downloading detailed maps and uploading waypoint data and track files is a snap. Besides the rock-solid performance of the unit, the software that runs the unit itself is the best I have ever seen in any product. It is versatile, programmable, intuitive, and extremely easy to use. Menus are lightning fast to navigate and one-handed operation is a snap with its ergonomic design. I've used it on a boat, bicycle, motorcycle, hang glider, and even in an F-16, and it has always performed flawlessly. Customer service is also first-rate. If you don't buy a III+, at least make sure you buy a Garmin.

Customer Review: TV ad Missleading
Summary: 5 Stars

This is just a quick note to remind people of the realistic capabilities of the gps 3 series and all other units. In the amazon/usps TV ad, the guy is running around his house playing with a new gps3 or 3+. These units function great, and will tell you how far it is to cleveland etc, but they DO NOT function inside buildings. GPS satelite signals are very weak, and even when you are outside, if you are near a large building or under lots of trees, your reception can be poor. The is not the unit's fault, it is the radio frequencies assigned by the gvt. If you use it in areas that recpetion is poor, the gps3 series is a good choice because it has an easily removeable antenna which can be placed on an extension cable for a small improvement, or replaced with an amplified antenna for a big improvement.

Customer Review: More than just a gadget
Summary: 5 Stars

I did a lot of shopping around before I purchased my GPS III Plus, and I found it to be the most user friendly handheld GPS on the market. Its menus are easy to understand and after a few minutes of toying with the unit it becomes very easy to use. I use it for fishing, hunting, flying (only as a back up), hiking, and for off-road trails. The groundspeed and altimeter are interesting to keep an eye on during road trips. The US Topo CD really adds a lot of detail to the base map and is a great addition for fishing applications because it gives a more accurate depiction of the shoreline. Garmin regularly posts upgrades on their website for both the GPS and the Map Source CD's which are easily downloaded. Great Product and very easy to use. (I have stereo remote controls that are harder to use.)

Customer Review: Impressive Unit
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first turned this unit on after installing its batteries, I gave it absolutely no information about the current time or even where on earth it was (it had just arrived via 2nd day air from Reno, Nevada). Without any aiding, it took only about two minutes to acquire 4 satellites, determine the current UTC time, and correctly locate its position in northwest Atascadero, CA (which appears by name on its internal map). I must admit that I am impressed by this unit. It is currently sitting on the window sill in my office, happily tracking 8 satellites. Now that selective availability (SA) has been discontinued by executive order, the accuracy of the standard positioning service (SPS) should improve by about an order of magnitude, making this little gem even more valuable.
