Customer Review: great toy!
Summary: 4 Stars

Actually, calling this a toy takes a little bit of the dignity away from something that is truly powerful and useful with it. I use my newly-acquired III+ so as not to get lost. It picks up the reception just fine through the windshield of my car while the machine is on my dash. I'm pretty impressed with the battery life too; much better than I had originally thought. The tracking is spot-on. My only complaint (a tiny one) is the fact that the machine appears to take a long time getting started once you turn it on before heading out. Obviously, it's trying to acquire as many satellites as possible, but sometimes (eg. while driving out of my building's garage) it just gives up after a few minutes and throws you a map of the USA, asking for a verification of where you are. So then you have to respond (press Enter a couple of times) which isn't too great when you're trying to maneuver out onto the street with oncoming traffic. But anyhow, this doesn't always happen. Very flexible little gizmo, weighs almost nothing (about a pound).

Customer Review: Great product
Summary: 4 Stars

I own Garmin GPS III Plus for over 6 months and I love it. I purchased it with the cartridge for Columbus, GA and it is very detailed and precise. Too many Pros to list - simply a great unit. Some cons: - Sometimes (10% of the time) it is up to couple hundred feet off, which may at times put you on a different street. - There are several newer streets missing, but more then 95% of even the small streets and roads are there. - You can fairly easily locate your destination, but Garmin doesn't calculate any suggested way of getting there. It only shows straight line from where you are to your destination. But I was able to calculate my trip from Columbus to Tampa using StreetAtlas USA and upload to Garmin (special cable required)

Garmin posted some software updates for this unit but I don't know if they solve any of the above issues. At the time I bought it, Garmin didn't sell the US Map on a CD-ROM (MapSource) and blank cartridges to create your own maps; now they do.

Customer Review: A Must Have for an Army Professional
Summary: 5 Stars

Even though the US Army provides reliable GPS systems to most ground warriors who need them, I would buy this Garmin model again if I had to. I have used this GPS all over Bosnia, the Southern US, Mexico, Honduras, and the National Training Center. And, I find that it is much quicker and easier to use than the AN/PSN-11 (The Plugger -- the current 'new' model the Army uses). And, while it can't pinpoint your position to the square foot you are standing in, I have regualarly been able to find my destination easier than any Plugger operator. AND, the ability to download topographical data into this one makes any Plugger or Magellan user green with jealousy. I keep my Garmin in my Jeep when at home. I keep my Garmin with me on the ocean. I keep my Garmin on the hatch of my armored vehicle during field manuevers. I keep it on my belt when I road march. And, I keep it in my hand when my drivers drive me around in my HMMWV. I can't recommend it enough.

Customer Review: Never be lost
Summary: 5 Stars

Carrying the Garmin GPS III+ is like having a map that always shows a 'You are here' arrow. I've used this in the car, while walking through the streets of Boston, and while hiking in dense forest in the mountains of New Hampshire. In all cases, this GPS device has proved extremely useful. I used to get lost ALL the time--it's no longer a concern for me.

Now, before I travel to a new location, I look up the address and enter the latitude and longitude into the GPS 3+. The device doesn't have routing capabilities built-in (it won't find the shortest driving route to a destination), but it does tell you what direction you need to go and how far away it is. For me, that's enough.

I've purchased the US Roads and Recreation CD, which allows you to download detailed road information to the GPS 3+. The maps are accurate, and the GPS device has enough memory to store the entire greater-Boston area (3 or 4 counties).

Customer Review: GREAT DEVICE
Summary: 5 Stars

Dropped this unit into the saltwater at high tide and had to wait 6 hours to pull it out, and IT WAS STILL ON even though it had eventually taken on water. The unit lasted another 6 months of use in regular splashed environments before the long stay in saltwater finally got to it. I immediately went out and bought another one. Can purchase data on all bouy markers in your area and other data on CD for loading via PC connection. Holds a ton of waypoints. Quick to find itself after power off (have several other makes and models and this is the fastest). Would recommend Garmin products to anyone. In addition to being heavily capable against all weather conditions, the unit is also built to withstand dropping, etc. The maps it comes with are adequate for normal use on highways etc without buying the CD additions, and are of recent vintage. Nearby highway just recently completed was included in the standard onboard map.
