Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Forerunner 50 Water Resistant Running GPS With Heart Rate Monitor and Foot PodCustomer Review: Works Exactly As I Expected Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted to purchase a basic sports watch to measure distance. After looking into different models I found the Forerunner 50. It was within my price range. It took a little time figuring out how to work it and I couldn't get the foot pod to pair with the unit. I contacted support through email and they replied the next day. I followed the instructions they gave me and ended up replacing the battery. The battery is common and easy to find. Once I did that, it worked great. I have only used it a few times running on the treadmill. The distance between the two is off 0.4 miles. My treadmill is pretty old so the real test will be to run a known distance and calibrate it from there. I do think Garmin should be a little more clear with the owner's manual though. I think it is well worth the price.
Customer Review: Garmin forerunner 50 Summary: 4 Stars
The watch is complicated to set up and begin using but now that it is working correctly it is wonderful. The data downloads easily and is easy to read and interpret. The help desk gets a 50% rating. The first guy was rude but the second guy (Aaron) was wonderful. He walked me through a bunch of steps and he determined the problem was a dead battery. He even emailed the directions for pairing up the devices to use after replacing the battery. Two of the 3 batteries needed to be replaced immediately and the watch battery needed to be replaced only one week after receiving the watch. That seemed weird.
The watch was a birthday present from my husband. It is important to note that I am over 60 and I love the watch. If i can figure it out, anyone can! Keep running!
Customer Review: Excellent entry level runner's tool Summary: 4 Stars
At the ripe old age of 61 I decided to do my first triathlon. I needed to improve my running skills and needed data to let me know how I was doing. The forerunner 50 was easily programed to link to the chest strap I use with my 305 Garmin on my bicycle. I have found it to be very helpful in my training especially when downloading results to the Garmin Training Center. It is easy to see progress and to compare the training to where I was a week or a month ago. This does not have GPS, but seems to be relatively accurate with distances and very accurate with heart rate. It is not something to wear swimming (although Garmin now has a watch that can be used from start to finish on a triathlon) or hiking as the GPS would be a better way to go. I recommend it.
Customer Review: FOR ROAD ONLY does not work on gym equipment Summary: 3 Stars
The forerunner 50 only counts calories, speed, etc. when you are on the road. The only thing it does when you are on fitness equipment is track your heart rate. I didn't know there was a heart rate monitor that didn't determine calories all the time.
Garmin customer service tells me the forerunner series does not work on elliptical machines, exercise bikes, or stair steppers. I have been told it reads inconsistent on the treadmill. I was very disappointed because I planned on using this to track "fitness" on my elliptical as well as outdoor walking.
With that said, it seems to work great on the road. For those of you training for a marathon it would be good. But this doesn't meet my needs. I'm hoping I can return it.
Customer Review: A Terrible Training Partner!! Summary: 1 Stars
Though I have had good luck with other garmin products I have purchased, this watch and heart rate monitor turned out to be a waste of money. The watch came on time, as usual from amazon, and seemed to be another high quality garmin piece. Out of the box the watch was okay to set up and worked fine after synching the foot pod and heart rate monitor. However within three days of use, the battery died. After replacing the battery, the watch never worked the same again. It would turn on and off on its own, sometimes in the middle of a run! It was NEVER reliable again, after trying multiple batteries, it simply was a nightmare to try and do anything with the watch. Though garmin usually has good products, this one was awful.
