Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Forerunner 50 Water Resistant Running GPS With Heart Rate Monitor and Foot PodCustomer Review: Great watch but foot pod battery dead on arrival Summary: 4 Stars
I got this watch with the heart rate monitor and foot pod a few weeks ago. I had seen several other reviews mention problems with the foot pod but figured I'd try it out.
Sure enough, when the package arrived, the foot pod didn't work! Battery was dead! It's pretty disappointing to buy a "new" product and not even have it work. I'm not sure what the problem is, but speculate that Garmin may have made an error in setting the foot pod to go into inactivity after 30 min. Why so long? That might mean that the foot pod is burning energy for 30 min every time it is used, before going inactive, thus burning through a small battery.
Anyway, finally I got organized, sucked up my pride, and went to buy a new battery for the foot pod for $2.75, and now I'm in business. Ran with it the other day (after a quick sync with the watch- directions are easy and battery was easy to change) and it worked great! So fun to have the mileage and speed of my run calculated for me!
Other than that, the watch and HRM are great. the manual is very simple and user friendly, the watch intuitive to use. I would highly recommend this watch, but just be ready to change the foot pod battery regularly, if you decide to get it.
Customer Review: Please take note!!! Summary: 1 Stars
Let me preface this statement that I normally LOVE garmin products. However please be aware this product is NOT up to Garmin's standards. Here is my BIG issue.
If you want a calorie count from your workout I hope you have your footpod or cadence sensor because guess what? YOU WON'T get one! Most HRMs I have purchased in the past have the built in ability to give you a very general calories burned. This unit DOES NOT by itself have the ability to do that without the footpod or the cadence sensor (for bikes). Most people like to throw their HRM on and head out to the gym, you might lift some weights, do some cardio (eliptical trainer, treadmill, etc) and then when you head home you look to see how many calories you burned. This unit will not provide you that information.
Don't get burned. Look elsewhere for your HRM needs. If you want an outdoor unit the Forerunner 405 or 305 is great. For indoors Garmin should leave that to Polar.
Customer Review: Buyer Beware Summary: 1 Stars
After reading positive reviews on this I decided to purchase. I thought it would be great to track my pace and distance on runs. FIRST one I got never worked, right out of the box. Although I read that it was Mac-compatible, it was not...compatibility to come later. Called service/return/wait for receipt by Garmin; they sent another. Would not pair with footpod. Called again. Was told the batteries may need to be replaced! By me, at my own cost. Changed the battery in the footpod, got one run in. It still will not recognize ant stick, and the watch is running 2 hours behind. The watch battery requires "professional installation". All in all, a horrible experience. I paid for this product 3 months ago, and have gotten almost no use. Garmin is obviously aware of these problems and trying to pass it off on consumers. I'd spend more and get something reliable. Good luck out there everyone.
Customer Review: Nifty Summary: 4 Stars
It works pretty much as described. I used it on the treadmill today just to test out its accuracy, and it recorded a 3 mile run as being 3.2 miles. I'm thinking the treadmill must be the more accurate of the two, but I could be wrong. At any rate, you can calibrate the device so it's not a big deal. The heart rate monitor agreed with the monitor on the treadmill, and the end calorie calculation was within 2 calories of what the treadmill reported.
The sync feature is pretty cool, but the software feels a little "old". It's good, but it looks and feels like it was written in 1995. Getting the 405 would probably make the software a little more useful because with the GPS you can view your route on a map and it tracks not only distance but elevation.
Overall I'd say it's fun to use and that it's helping my workouts.
Customer Review: Not reliable after battery replacement Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this Forerunner 50 to track distance and have a visible (but not heavy) watchband display. First months of use were fine after I learned how to switch between modes. But after replacing the (watch) battery, the unit has been HUGELY UNRELIABLE. I use it twice a week, for long runs. The unit goes dead in between these uses and I have to completely reset the time, etc. It loses any saved history. After a couple of months of this behavior, now the thing STOPS TRACKING MY DISTANCE IN THE MIDDLE OF A RUN!! How frustrating! I run for miles, only to look down at the display and see that the distance monitor has stopped altogether! I am not sure what to buy that is similar product, without spending a fortune. I am not able to use GPS units because I run in tree covered trails sometimes.
