Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Forerunner 310XT Waterproof Running GPS With USB ANT Stick and Heart Rate MonitorCustomer Review: Tri Swim Solution Summary: 5 Stars
Having used the 310XT in many tri's and reading the struggles others have with GPS in the swim section the solution is simple...... put the unit in your swim cap at the crown of your head and you will have an excellent GPS info for your swim. The low power signals put out by the heart rate monitor and the GPS satellites will not penetrate more than about an inch of water. So during the swim section this device will give you a great GPS track if it remains above the water where it can keep a lock on the satellites. On your arm it loses the lock with every stroke and can only get a partial lock during the short time its above water, hence the wonky tracking. Otherwise its a great device that reliably gets data from various sensors (which like all of these products you have to buy separately). The watch is still the best all around tri product out there able to go with you quickly from swim to bike to run. Its also the best "fitness" tracker out there able to track your heart rate, cycling and running info in the gym, on a treadmill, trainer or outside and then upload the info so you can analyze the data.
Customer Review: Do not buy Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this as a birthday present for a triathlete friend, since I had been raving about how much I like my 305. But alas, this watch does not work for triathletes.
Please be sure to read the threads on the garmin forums about this watch before buying. Some key things to know:
The GPS does not work underwater. This means that your pace and distance calculations will be completely wrong. They can show up 2x or 3x what you really did. Unless you hook the watch up to your swim cap so that it is always out of the water.
For swimming, it tells you that you are downhill skiing. It really isn't a big deal.. it is just the icon. But for a $400 product, and one that is designed for non-engineers, this is horrible.
If you happen to run in hurricanes, maybe this is a good watch for you, since it has all of the 305 features in a waterproof configuration.
If you are trying to use it for swimming, don't bother.Unless you just want a watch that will survive swimming so that you can use the measurements while running/biking.
Customer Review: Misleading Advertising to Triathletes Summary: 2 Stars
First, the disappointing parts of this watch:
While it is advertised as a triathlete's watch, advertised as a "training device that isn't afraid of the water," it is useless in the water. A triathlete's watch it is not. First, they offer a "water-proof" heart rate monitor with it that, while it is "water-proof," it doesn't actually work in the water. Seriously?? Second, the water interferes with the devices ability to read and transmit other information. Almost as bad as the HRM's complete failure, it's GPS is not always strong enough to move through a few inches of water. So again--"water-proof" is misleading.
This is a terrific watch for biking and running. However, given the uncomfortable size and the astronomical price, and the dishonesty of their marketing, I would suggest the less expensive, far nicer looking, and longer battery lives of the Suuntos.
Customer Review: Perfect training watch Summary: 5 Stars
You can't go wrong with this. I have one and my wife has one. My running group has 25 people in it, and probably 15 people have this exact watch. The large square screen, durability and ease of use, make this a winner. You can also leave the light on constantly when running at night, and it barely reduces battery life. I can leave the light on full brightness for 2 hours and the battery still have 83% left after the training. This is the perfect watch if you run or cycle. The only downside is that it doesn't look good for daily use, so it is basically a dedicated workout watch. However, if you are serious about working out and want the best watch available, there are no other better choices. I have had zero problems with mine so far (I bought mine 8 months ago, and my wifes about 1 month ago).
Customer Review: Love this Garmin Summary: 4 Stars
What I love about this watch is that I can jog in the rain without worry, it appears to be very accurate, the display is great, battery life is long, and it's reasonably comfortable considering it's size.
What I don't like is that sometimes it can take a long time (several minutes) to lock onto enough satellite coverage to get a reading. Once it locks on, then it doesn't let go unless I go inside of a building. While battery life is great for this kind of watch (they claim about 20 hours) it's not good enough for you to wear it every day as your normal watch.
If you plan on taking this watch jogging (which is what I used it for) I'm confident you'll be very happy with its functions.
