Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Foot PodCustomer Review: Sorry, people, there is a serious design flaw here... Summary: 3 Stars
I've read all the reviews for this Garmin foot pod and its predecessor, and the majority of the reviews are positive and reviewer recommended. However, I'm going against the grain on this one by not giving it 5 stars. This product merits only about 3.5 stars, but since I cannot give 1/2 a star, I'll have to make it 3 by truncation. Why? Because this foot pod doesn't deserve 4 stars (to me) for two reasons.
For one, there is a serious design flaw, as I shall soon explain. Granted, Garmin makes a functionable foot pod; mines paired to my 405 right out of the box with no battery problems, and the data obtained by it is usable and very informative for my running improvement -- these are plusses. However, this foot pod was made to be used universally on footwear, virtually any type of running shoe. However, the design does not allow it to be used on any running shoe -- it slips out of the laces much too easily! Considering the price tag for this item, designing a foot pod that is meant to be used universally, but is only applicable to SPECIFIC running shoes (i.e., those shoes that can accommodate a foot pod, such as Nike+ or Addidas) means that the design does not befit its intended application. Case and point: I run with this foot pod in a pair of Nike Turbo 8 Shox, and it continually slips out of my shoe laces, totally disrupting my run and training, and putting my investment at high risk of ruin by kicking it when it pops out. To relieve this problem, I stick the foot pod deep down in the side, underneath the side flap that covers the tongue, and to keep it in place, I have to tie the shoe laces super extra tight, which is very uncomfortable, and not the way you want to run during marathon training. When I use the Nike Shox (my main running shoe during intervals, tempos, and medium-long runs), all my runs completely suck with this foot pod. However, I cannot improve without the data it gives me, therefore, its a bittersweet satisfaction.
Secondly, the battery is a pain to replace. Granted, accessing the battery is easy, but removing the battery from the cover requires a prying tool and careful hands. Everything about this foot pod is plastic, plastic, plastic, and its very easy to scar your equipment trying to remove the battery. If you are not careful, you can very easily damage your battery cover, and then you will have serious problems.
The cost for this product is too high for such a narrow potential of ruin. Garmin needs to re-design this foot pod so that it can be used according to its purpose. Either market it as a foot pod designed for a particular kind of running shoe, or re-design it so that it can be used on virtually any running shoe, as stated. As it stands, this foot pod is not designed for all running shoes.
I am not bashing Garmin, because I purchase all of my GPS equipment from Garmin. However, I will have to say that they dropped the ball terribly on this particular accessory. Many people may not agree with me. Perhaps if I had running shoes that accommodate foot pods, I'd feel likewise that this is an awesome product deserving 4-5 stars. I cannot say this for the shoes I use, and I can only rate this foot pod 3 out of 5 stars.
Description of Garmin Foot Pod This tiny foot pod is small enough to attach to your shoelaces or fit in the mid-sole pocket of compatible shoes. It's always ready to use, and a small, replaceable watch battery powers the foot pod for a year of training. Unlike simple pedometers, this foot pod uses advanced MEMS inertial-sensor technology to analyze your movements and is responsive to stride-length changes to achieve 98 percent accuracy for speed and distance. Additionally, this sensor measures running cadence to help you optimize your training.
