Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Colorado 400t Handheld GPS Unit with U.S. Topographic Preloaded MapsCustomer Review: Amazing Device! Summary: 5 Stars
I am amazed at the new Garmin Colorado 400T. It is nice, feels good and does not look cheap. I use regular batteries and it has a long enough life for one day being full on, and display at maximum brightness. Is is not 100% accurate as when I was walking in New York city my path (trail) was not marked by a straight line, but instead with curvy lines that followed the streets I walked on. It did not lose reception anywhere, even when in building 'canyons'. Another interesting part is that when on the train to New York it kept reception at all times unless I was in tunnel before the city. Lastly when I was flying from Florida to New Jersey I figured I would try device to see what it found. It picked my location while I was sitting in an aisle seat, kept track of flight, and showed plane airspeed. I am very happy with this unit and now take it everywhere. It is interesting to know where you are all of the time!
Customer Review: Love the Colorado 400t Summary: 4 Stars
I really like this thing a lot. It had some issues at first, battery life being the main one, but I started using the quick charging Energizers and have had no problems since. Another problem is with it shutting down intermittently when the batteries become weak (this is my notice to change the batteries), it does tell you when the batteries are weak and it only shuts down occasionally. I have recently downloaded a firmware update for it which has fixed a lot of these things.
I especially like the Geocache features it comes with. I can log my visit to a cache and it now lets me put comments in for the individual caches. That is a great feature!
I highly recommend this unit for all uses. I have the City Navigator NT 2008 on it as well and this thing will take me anywhere I want to go. I love taking it hiking, fishing, ATVing, on the road, etc. It is very versatile.
Customer Review: Included Software Not As Advertised Summary: 3 Stars
There is plenty of info out there on this GPS. I'm only going to mention one thing and if you do not plan on connecting your GPS to a computer you can skip this review. If you go online and download the free Garmin BaseCamp software you will think you are getting a nice piece of software to plan your next trip outdoors. What they don't tell you is that the BaseCamp screen shots they show on the website and instruction manual are based on maps that must be purchased separately. Even though you just paid for a GPS with built in topo maps.
So if you pay the extra $100 for a GPS with built in topo maps like the 400t you will have to pay another $100 if you wish to make your GPS useful when connected to a computer. To my amazement Garmin customer support told me to return the GPS and buy a cheaper one then buy the map separately so I can view it both on my computer and GPS.
Customer Review: Don't Buy a Garmin! Summary: 1 Stars
I have had my Garmin for about six months now and have mostly given up on it. It is a disaster. Yes, I have seen all the videos showing all the cool things you can easily do with a Garmin and I don't believe any of it. The videos have to be mass produced fakes. Basic things like battery life are annoying (Garmin has none), but using the software on this high tech trivet is another matter all together. Multiple attempts to use Topo 100K, for example, has been nothing but an exercise in frutration. I have followed directions and still come up short. You shouldn't have to commit hours to tech bulletin boards and user groups to figure out how to use a device these days. I couldn't be more disappointed in a product. This is far and away the worst purchase I have made in recent memory...and I'm not the most responsible guy you're going to meet.
Customer Review: Use the High Capacity Batteries Summary: 5 Stars
I have the Garmin Colorado 400i, basically the same unit with a different map set. Some folks have mentioned that the battery life is a tad short. Others have suggested using high capacity batteries. Both opinions are accurate. I like to use rechargeables and I have tested Duracell NiMH with an 1800 mAh rating, Sony NiMH with a 2500 mAh rating, and Duracell NiMH with a 2650 NiMN. I turned on the receiver, left the back light on the low setting, and checked it periodically, noting when each set failed. Obviously this is an approximation and I won't report the details but there was a significant improvement with each step up in mAh. It was measured in hours, not minutes. I wish that the unit ran longer on a set, that is a fact, but I will just carry spare high capacity batteries. It sure is better than my old Magellan.
