Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin 010-00679-05 Forerunner 50 Sports Watch with Heart Rate Monitor and USB ANT StickCustomer Review: Forerunner 50 w/ Speed and cadence sensor Summary: 4 Stars
I needed a HRM and also wanted something to track my bike training. I looked at GPS units, but the ones in my price range appear bulky; the Forerunner 50 with the Speed and Cadence Sensor is a very good alternative. Monitor works great and the download to the Garmin Training Center is easy where you can review and analyze your workout. Only negative is the instructions are not easy to follow especially for some of the less used functions. Over all, this unit has exceeded my expectations and I would recommend it to anyone.
Customer Review: HR Zones lacking Summary: 1 Stars
Beware -even though it is written that you can progam in HR zones - in fact there is only one zone that you can set. So this monitor is usless if you want to see or you want a record of which HR zones you have have trained in. Because of this I sent mine back. Ended up getting a Sports Instrument 9 (which is sold all over the place for cheap because it is not made anymore) which does have the five zones. Doesn't download to a computer though, so you have to write the data down if you want to keep it.
Customer Review: Efficient and easy to use Summary: 4 Stars
The Garmin forerunner is a great product, on an overall level. It will only track your HR when you exercise, though, no other metrics. It will NOT track calorie output or anything else unless you have the foot pod attachment, and then it will only track it when running. I was looking for a hrm to track hr, calories, and stay within target zones but the Garmin isn't equipped to do that. If you just need a hrm, this Garmin is great, easy to use, and the chest sensor is comfortable and fits well.
Customer Review: Poor watch battery design Summary: 2 Stars
Originally bought this from Amazon. When low battery displayed, I attempted to replace on my own without success. The manual should say MUST have watch specialist replace watch battery. I struggled getting the battery hold down on, and I stripped a screw. Garmin was nice enough to send me a refurb replacement. Soon after, this battery was low too. I replaced it today although not perfectly, and I'll hope that the watch keeps working. I would recommend trying a different watch of this type.
Customer Review: Terrible design Summary: 1 Stars
Seemed ok until the battery cut out after a couple of months.
Do a search on the web for 'garmin 50 battery replacement'. You'll quickly find that it is non trivial. I read several sets of instructions and gave it a shot: seemed pretty easy but then I would find the watch with a blank screen. So I would start over. This has happened several times and from what I gather, Garmin will only offer a replacement (so you get to practice). Stay away from this product.
