Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of GARMIN 010-10457-00 Windshield Mount with Suction Cup (for GPSMAP 60 Series)Customer Review: Does the job, but could be better. Summary: 3 Stars
If you absolutely need a windshield mounting bracket for your Garmin 60 series gps, this one will do, but you may want to look elsewhere. There is another one available here at amazon that may work better... but maybe not, and it's a bit more expensive.
As for this one:
* Bottom Line:
* If... _IF_ you really feel you need/want a windshield mount... it seems this is as good as any. But it does have its drawbacks.
* Pros:
* Seems sturdy and the GPS stays in the bracket very well.
* More mounting angles possible than cheaper ones (like my old TomTom mount).
* easy to move to another vehicle
* easy to disconnect the gps from the mount (!!! except that that darn little screw is still attached (see below) !!!)
* Cons:
* you need to use the belt clip "screw" that came with the gps unit itself... or else it will not work!!
* this is (a) annoying and (b) pretty lame since it's a tiny little piece that can be easily lost/misplaced
* while the mounting angles are good for up and down... helping with the slopes of various windshields... it's not so great for turning to the side to avoid glare, etc.
So... again, if you need a mount for hands-free use of this (at least while just viewing)... this will work. However, it's arguable whether or not this is better for me than just holding the darn thing in my hand. And while convenience is not too bad, it's much more convenient to not use a mount at all.
Customer Review: Either faulty or does not work in the winter Summary: 1 Stars
I ordered this to mount my 60CSx GPS unit to the winshield of my 2003 Taurus. I could not get it to stay for more than a few minutes with NO load - just the mount by itself. It seemed to be pretty firm at first, but within 5 minutes it would fall off.
I am sure the windshield and suction cup itself were clean, so that is not the issue.
The suction cup can be attached to the frame two ways depending on the windshield angle, but I tried both ways and neither worked, so that is not the issue.
I tried several locations on the windshield and none worked, so that is not the issue.
The temperature varied from 0 to 45 degrees F during the time period I was trying this. The temp did not seem to have an effect. If anything, it may have stayed longer at 0 degrees.
I understand there are several reviews claiming that it sticks to windshields well. I'm not doubting them, I'm just telling you my experience. Because of this, I'm suspecting my particular unit was faulty, although there were no visible nicks or scratches in the suction cup that I could see.
I have returned this to Amazon, we'll see if they give me any hassle. It is impossible to open the package without cutting it open. I plan on ordering the mount that permanently attaches to my dashboard. I travel a lot, so that may be a better option anyway.
**Update on refund** Amazon refunded it with no problems.
Customer Review: Waste of money. Buy a RAM Mount instead. Summary: 1 Stars
What a disappointment. I can't believe Garmin would sell such an inferior product.
The mount is so flimsy that the GPS constantly vibrates while driving.
Since the mount only offers only limited adjustments, I had a really hard time positioning it to a decent viewing angle in 3 or 4 different vehicles.
The adjustment screws don't stay tight, which causes the GPS to spin 90 degrees. Of course, this only happens if the suction cup holds long enough. Most times, the suction cup loses its grip causing the whole shebang to fall off the windshield. My nearly new, pristine 60CSx got a nice scratch on the screen the other day when this happened. Needless to say, I am not happy. Besides being an annoyance, this is also unsafe if it happens while you're driving down the road.
Do yourself a favor. Spend a few bucks more and get a RAM Mounting Systems Suction Cup Mount for Garmin GPS 60, GPSMAP 60, 60C, 60CS, 60CX, 60CSx instead of this garbage. I am ordering mine as soon as I finish writing this up.
Customer Review: Exceeds Expectations! Summary: 5 Stars
I am very impressed with this mounting bracket; it works much better than I thought it would. It is built solid and is very easy to figure out. The suction cup device works great and provides for a very secure hold on any glass surface. I've read some reviews that mentioned the need of mounting the bracket down low so that the GPS unit rests on top of the dashboard for stability to keep it from bouncing when driving. I can confirm that this is indeed a problem. The first time I tried this was at night and I didn't notice it straight off. But the next day in the daylight, the bouncing and shaking was very noticeable. I do wish there was an adjustment to allow the unit to pivot to the left or right along the vertical axis. This would be a huge improvement as it would help to adjust the unit to avoid problems with glare and reflections on the face of the GPS unit. All in all, I am very pleased with this product and I was thinking about purchasing a second one for the other car. However, this one is so easy to mount and take down it's not really necessary to purchase another one. This one is a real keeper.
Customer Review: Holds well, should be more solid though Summary: 3 Stars
This mount holds your 60xx gps as promised (I'm using it with the newer gpsmap 60csx with no issues). There is a "jacket" that snaps onto your device and the jacket then attaches to the mount via a quick release (incidentally, this jacket is the same as used in the 60xx.. bike mount). The entire construction won't fall off the windshield as another reviewer has stated - I've tried this in Vermont (<30F) and Miami (>80F) and actually had a hard time removing the mount when returning the rental car.
I did find two nuisances though:
- if you mount the gps a little higher so that the bottom does not touch the dashboard, you'll find that it's not that steady; the unit bounces slightly while you drive, making it harder to read directions
- you can't mount the unit anything but vertically. You may think that that's ok, but the gpsmap60csx that I own is *much* more readable when the sun shines into its display, such as when holding it almost level. An extra 20 deg tilt would make all the difference between an always- readable display and one that needs backlighting even in daylight.
