Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of GARMIN 010-10454-00 Handlebar Bike Mount (for GPSMAP 60 Series)

Customer Review: Worth the money but could be better
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased my bicycle mount for my GPSMAP60CSX about a year ago and have used it numerous times. Most of the use has been on roads or fairly smooth trails. I have done some fairly rough mountain biking with this mount on 2 occasions. I did manage to break the very top of the mount (the hole where the round button on the back of the GPS unit fits) when my knee knocked the unit. I think the area at the top of the GPS cradle could be strengthened if Garmin decided to redesign this product. I can still use the mount but the GPS will come out when I hit large bumps in the trail (road riding is not a problem). I would recommend looping the wrist strap around your handle bars as a safety at all times to avoid loss or damage of your very expensive GPS unit. For mountain biking use I think this product is certainly worth the $20. For casual riding with a mountain bike you should have no problems. As mentioned by another reviewer, this is not compatible with a road bike (at least not mine). I have a Cannondale Synapse and this mount will not fit around my handlebars. I am still looking for a way to use my Garmin with my road bike.

Customer Review: Holds it Ok, but...
Summary: 2 Stars

I really like my 60CSx and the car mount is excellent, but this mount needs better engineering.

The mount itself only fits a few sizes of handle bars and it's hard to get the ends of the clamp lined up and get the screw going straight into the plastic. It won't take a lot to strip the plastic threads. I figure if you take it off 4 to 6 times, it'll be history.

There is no way to change the angle of the mount without removing the mount and repositioning it. If the sun is reflecting off it into your eyes, too bad.

The piece that connects the GPS to the mount is a pretty good setup and seems to work OK for a bicycle. In a car, the power cord interferes with taking the GPS on and off and you need to grind off a corner of the plastic piece, but on a bike this is a non issue.

All-in-all, for the price of this, I expect a lot more. At least a longer lasting and more secure metal clamp for the base like anything else for a bicycle has, and an adjustable angle that is easy to clamp down - maybe with a thumb screw.

Customer Review: Great but use the wrist strap too
Summary: 4 Stars

I have used this for over a year. I did have to buy the larger bracket for my road bike but the one that comes with this fits on my touring bike. I like how the mount just slides off the bracket so it is easy to switch between bikes. They aren't that expensive.

I was never comfortable with my $500 (now $300) 60CSx just sitting in the cradle so I loop the wrist strap around the handlebars.

My touring bike has 2 inch tires (60psi) so it handles the bumps well. My road bike of course has the thin tires pumped up to 125psi and does not handle the bumps well.

It was working fine until a couple of days ago I hit a bump on my road bike and (as some else mentioned) the little circle part cracked. So every bump home would knock the unit out. However, the wrist strap saved it from hitting the ground!

I called Garmin support and they are sending out a new one. Since I had it for over a year and their support is awesome I rated it 4 stars. Since it broke I couldn't give it 5.

Customer Review: I wish I had read the other reviews first
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm not sure why the other reviewers are so charitable, given that they indicate the product does not work properly without help from rubber bands. My GPS fell off twice over small bumps on the first ride. Imagine the horror of seeing your $400 GPS bouncing down the road behind you...
There is no reasonable alternative to mount the unit on the bike, so I will cross my fingers and use two strong rubber bands to augment the unreliable item purchased from Garmin. It couldn't cost Garmin much more to produce a good bracket mount.
Having said that, the60Csx is really tough and designed for abuse. With all the skidding and bouncing, it only has a few scratches on the corners. The display was protected by the design of the unit (it is recessed).
UPDATE: I found one that works! It's a bit heavy, but no problems with this one, no matter how many bumps. It's about $28 or so.

Customer Review: Nice item to have for motorcycle or bicycle
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased two of these handlebar mounting units. One is used on my mountain bike and the other is used on my motorcycle. This mount is easy to install and easy to use. The GPS 60csx and 60cx fit perfectly. However, I have a couple of concerns.
1. The unit is completely made of plastic. While riding, the unit is in full sun--either mountain bike or motorcycle. I don't know how long before the plastic starts breaking down and falls apart.
2. The mount does not allow for minor angle adjustments--you have to find the right spot to mount it on your handlebar and hope it faces you correctly. Otherwise the GPS receiver screen may be difficult to read. Mine has a slight angle to the right but I can see the screen.

Overall, I am satisfied with this mount and would buy it again.
