Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Map Update 2009 for City Navigator North America NTCustomer Review: A Fine Update for Your Garmin GPS Summary: 4 Stars
I puchased this update for my Garmin StreetPilot 2720. After readin gthe reviews on the 2008 upgrade I decided to wait until this one came out - and glad I did.
The update added many of the new roads and highways around my area. I bought my GPS back in 2006 so there were many additions. It not only included the major highways but also some minor streets and avenues around my own city.
And since I live in Florida - the theme park capital of the world - it was nice to find several alternate routes to use to get the parks without having to travel the dreaded I-4.
All in all a great update for your GPS - although when you do install it, give yourself some time. Upgrading my unit took roughly 2 hours. I give it 4 out 5 simply because of the length of time it took to upgrade and it seems a bit pricey for this upgrade.
Customer Review: Danger! Summary: 1 Stars
We purchased this update for our Nuvi 360 primarly because it was missing many local points of interest, such as gas stations and restaurants. The good news is that this update has many of the missing points of interest in our area (NE US). Unfortunately the new map also has critical inaccuracies, with some two-way streets incorrectly labeled as one-way and some one-way streets incorrectly labeled as two-way. The effect is that the new routes proposed by the 2009 update are horrifically flawed. Instead of going from point A to point B by some short and reasonably direct route, our Nuvi 360 tells us to go in the most circuitous route imaginable, even doubling the required distance. It's so bad that we have stopped using our Nuvi and would gladly pay Garmin another $60 to undo the update. Install this flawed product at your own peril!
Customer Review: Favorites get Wiped Out with 2009! Summary: 1 Stars
Just upgraded to 2009 City Navigator for North America (for my StreetPilot 340). First I had to run it through Firefox vs. IE (firewall issues); got this tip from Garmin support. Second, I discovered that this upgrade wiped out all of my saved "Favorite" locations...ugh! This did not happen when I had upgraded to the 2008 version. Contacted Garmin support (again)...they indicated that there is no way to recover those faorites: from Gramin support " Thank you for contacting Garmin International. This will sometimes happen if the operating software is very old in the unit during the update. With this unit due to it not being mass storage there is no way to back the favorites up to a computer." No mention of this potential issue was included in any documentation (BTW, I did this directly from the Garmin website).
So why would we want to upgrade?
Customer Review: Good Update Summary: 4 Stars
I updated my StreetPilot 2720. I don't understand these 2 hour updates. I know it advises that it could take that long. My update took just a little over an hour (about 70 minutes) after one false start. Maybe the NUVIs take longer. I moved into my new home Nov. 2005, of course it didn't show on my previous map (2006). This version takes me right to my driveway. Some people complain that the system takes the roundabout way. I've seen that in my local area, but it seems to me that it is taking the most logical route, although that may not be what you want. In my case it was staying with numbered highways where I normally take a less crowded route. You are always free to force 'Recalculating' if you prefer, I do frequently. I switched to British English, She's more pleasant than the American.'Recalculating' doesn't sound like it's a bother.
Customer Review: Many local errors still not fixed for SC! Summary: 2 Stars
I am very disappointed that City Navigator 2009 still contains errors that were present (and I reported!) in City Navigator 2008. If you live in the upstate of South Carolina don't waste your money. For example, a Local Rt 188 is still labeled as Rt 60 (which it has not been for about 30 years). Worse, streets in our neighborhood, which is on a peninsula on a lake, are shown on the wrong peninsula--Garmin tries to route you over open water across non-existing streets. The only thing in our area that I find corrected is the entrance to Greenville, SC (GSP) airport. It was missing in 2008 and is present in 2009.
I, again, have reported all these errors via email. In return I received an email of excuse and apology offering to sell me the "next" version of City Navigator for $35. Maybe not.
