Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Map Update 2009 for City Navigator North America NT

Customer Review: Good product, but still not 100%
Summary: 3 Stars

I have a Nuvi that I bought in 2007. It had the 2008 update but I found that there were a number of roads not in the software. Since my job is field service, I need to have accurate information, so I went with the Update 2009. Installation is easy but it takes about 30 minutes or longer to complete. Don't do this when pressed for time! I am still finding that some roads that were created or reconfigured over a year before the product was released are still not updated in the software. I also have problems on occasion where the map places the location on the wrong side of the street, but it gets me there.

My overall impression is that it's not worth making a yearly update, especially for the price. Every two years might be more realistic. It would also be great if there were a way to feed back errors in the maps so that they could be corrected in future releases. I'd say that the product is about 95% accurate based on my area.

Customer Review: Good software, poor licensing
Summary: 4 Stars

I had a Garmin Street Pilot 2720, then purchased a Etrex Legend HCx (and love both units). I had no problem installing the map update on the Street Pilot, very smooth and no problems. Then I discovered Garmin's crappy licensing policy that would not let me install on the Legend. I spent HOURS on the Garmin web site, Googling, and finally called Garmin customer support (another fun job). It turns out that I was going to have to spend a chunk of money to be able to support the Legend....fortunately I found that topo maps are available for free for the Garmin units and lost interest in trying to put City Navigator on the Legend.

As I said the City Navigator seems fairly good. I have only had one problem on a recent trip to L.A. where an freeway intersection was drawn incorrectly and the Street Pilot was trying to make us turn across a concrete median to enter the 101 freeway....quite a challenge with a 32' 5th wheel trailer in tow!

Customer Review: Updating Streetpilot C340
Summary: 4 Stars

Initially had a problem during the update. Began by using my desk top. After approximately 4 minutes into the data transfer, the computer indicated an error in communicating with the GPS and stopped the data transfer. After several attempts, I contacted Garmin; the solution was that my auxially USB ports may be dropping the device after a brief period of time. Recommended I try a main port which I did. Experienced the same problem almost immediately after the Garmin Tecnician hung up. In frustration, I started the whole process over on my notebook. No problems, completed the entire update with no error. The only difference in the machines is that the notebook has 2 GIG RAM while the desktop only has 1 GIG. A friend updated his C340 using a notebook with 1 GIG so I don't think the amount of RAM is the problem. If someone else has the same problem and Garmin's advice is to switch USB ports you might press for another solution.

Customer Review: seems to do what they say
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not sure what it is exactly people had issues with on this update of the maps. Yes, it is VERY overpriced. Considering you can get a GPS New for about 1/3 of the cost of this update. But - if you need updated maps, or want them - this does it! It did take 2 hours to load, but there were no issues updating - none - not one. The OP who said it wipes out your data such as favorites, etc. Not for me. Perhaps his install died in the middle, etc. But for me - not! It worked and now my maps are up to date. I see all changes in local routes within the last year - and it lists a restaurant that I was trying to find last week before the updates. If you want the update and are willing to pay for it, go for it. Just follow the instructions exactly and it will install. When I went to kick off the install, it sat there for 20 minutes before asking me for input. I feared it had frozen, but nope - all worked well in the end.

Customer Review: WHY!!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

Obviously, Garmin has moved from the GPS business to the map selling business. The sad thing is that they don't seem to be able to do either very well lately. Why buy a Garmin system with outdated and error-filled mapping only to have to shell out more cash to buy an upgrade that is equally error-filled and outdated!!! I'm banging my head against the wall now.

Originally we loved our Garmin GPS, that is until we used it on a trip to Niagara Falls. Among the errors we encountered were: 1) being guided into a housing complex that was at least 20 years old while we were looking for a certain fast-food restaurant. The GPS just started taking us in circles once we were in the middle of the complex. 2) Having the software run us around the same block over and over while looking for a local tourist attraction. I knew we were going the wrong way but wanted to see if the GMS could figure it out - if only!!
