Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Map Update 2009 for City Navigator North America NTCustomer Review: Maps Don't Include Updates Summary: 1 Stars
I first purchased a Garmin Nuvi 650 GPS near the end of 2007. There was an error in the mapping which affected directions to my home. In January of 2008 I submitted a correction to the map provider, Navteq.
In January of 2009 I purchased an updated map entitled 2009 Map. The correction I'd submitted wasn't included. Garmin advised me that the last update they made to this edition was in June of 2008. Since the product I purchased was advertised as the 2009 version, I put a hold on the VISA payment to Amazon.
Garmin refused to reimburse me for my purchase because, they said, the product key I used to activate the "2009 Map" had been used by me so they couldn't reimburse me. Well, Duh. I only found out that the correction I'd submitted a year earlier hadn't been included in their mislabeled product because I activated the product to use it.
I can't see how they can label this a "2009 Map" if it doesn't contain any updates processed during the last half of 2008.

I updated from a 2007 data base on my Garmin NUVI 360. It was a very simple process, and since I am not a computer expert, I am sure that anyone with a minimum of computer knowledge could also be able to. Installation time was a little long, but with on screen prompts, you are led through the complete process.
The Garmin 2009 update included several newer roads that were not there before and many new POIs. For me it was well worth the time and expense as I am a General Contractor In a medium sized city and need to find many small and not well known areas. The Garmin greatly simplifies my life and saves me much time and flustration.
I highly recommend this update and AMAZON is the best way to get it as it is priced much better than going to garmin. The only negative is if you have more than one GPS, you are forced to buy a new update for each device, as once it is used it is locked to that specific device. Not really a problem for me, but something you should be made aware of.
Customer Review: Anyway to get a refund???? Summary: 2 Stars
First off, I can't get anywhere without a GPS and only really use it to travel in Texas. The old software had a few problems with giving the wrong exits, like in Fort Worth. This version corrected that but gave me one route to West Texas from home and on the return trip sent me another way. It still does not recognize that the George Bush Turnpike is open all the way to 161 and it kept telling me to exit and get on the George Bush Turnpike, when I was already on the turnpike. This happened two times! The old version didn't do that.
Then I ordered the disc to install the program because with my wireless connection downloads are slow... So I waited a week to get the product only to have it launch my internet connection so I could download the software! So one week and two hours later.... my nuvi was updated. All in all, wish I hadn't updated. It's tax deductible for me though, so I guess I'm not out any money, just time and that is not deductible.

Had a bit of a problem getting my Garmin Street Pilot 2720 to accept the update initially. Called Garmin Tech Support and found them to be very helpful. I did have to wait on hold for awhile, but the friendly and upbeat Kansas based support tech made several suggestions to get me beyond error messages relating to "communication errors". The one that did the trick was updating the operating system for the unit (from the Garmin website) before again attempting the update from the disk. I can't claim improved data accuracy yet because I just did the update, but my feeling is that I've come to rely on this unit so heavily I figure it's worth the cost to insure it's working off the most accurate information. By the way, Garmin claims the update may take up to 2 hours to complete and I believe it was probably about that long, so be prepared to have your computer tied up for awhile. In my opinion Garmin makes fine products and supports them well, including this update.

I recently purchased the Nuvi 760 and just last night I noticed I was eligible for a free 2009 map update. So, of course I took advantage of it, spending a few hours updating everything. Once finished, I noticed some places that were new that appeared on my POI. So I'm thinking...cool, got a free update (not really free after paying close to $400). Went to sleep that same night, woke up and took a client out to an unfamiliar area and noticed my Garmin wasn't working. I tried taking it off the bean bag holder and powering it up that way...no power. I tried hooking it up to my computer...no power. Basically, the unit is DEAD. I find it too much of a coincidence that I just loaded the 2009 map update and now it doesn't work (working fine before). I called Garmin and they want me to send it out to them since it's still under warranty. So I did. We'll see what happens, but I would think twice about purchasing this until it's been on the market longer.
