Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Map Update 2009 for City Navigator North America NTCustomer Review: DO NOT BUY GARMIN MAP UPDATES!! Summary: 1 Stars
Garmin is still the leader in car GPS devices in the US. I own two units, a Street Pilot 2820 fixed in my car, and a Nuvi 680 which I take with me on my frequent business trips. I bought the 2008 updates but could see no difference. None of the new roads in my area had been added and the mistakes I've noticed (mislabeled roads, illegal turns) have not been fixed. I was only allowed to update one unit with the CD, even though both units are registered with My Garmin. I became really angry when my Street Pilot was stolen, and even though I reported the unit and serial number stolen to Garmin to prevent the thieves trying to update it, Garmin still would not let me install the Maps on my Nuvi! So the thieves have both my GPS and Garmin is letting them keep my $60 map updates.
I will not be replacing my GPS with a new Garmin as I had hoped. With this kind of customer service I'm going to wait for something better to come along. Garmin still make the best hardware, but the software is becoming a real let down. I'm very disappointed, and angry that I have been ripped off by what I thought was a professional company.
Customer Review: Waste of money Summary: 1 Stars
Boy was I upset over this upgrade, not one single road in my area has been updated on the new maps, roads that are 3 and 4 years old are not on the new update. Friends in neighborhoods 3 years old , not on the map.
We have a new bypass around the city that they have been building for 5 years , it opened last Spring (March 2008), not on the maps. This is supposed to be the 2009 map update???
Had issues loading it too.
Now I am computer literate and did do the upgrades requested and gave Garmin all my info like a good sheep and did go to the Map companies website to check to see what is on the live maps - surprise !!!!! every single road I have an issue with is on their website. And I do live in a Metropolitan area , Triad region of NC.
I then decided to ask my friends who also have Garmin, my neighbor has a new Christmas present GPS , exactly the same vers of sw and NONE of the new roads or neighborhoods are on his either !!!!!!
Logged a written complaint at Garmin and of course have not heard a thing from them.
Dont waste your money !!!!!
Customer Review: Much-needed update for L.A. area Summary: 4 Stars
My Garmin nuvi 350 (from 2006, I think) was very out-of-date for the Los Angeles area, so I am relieved to have the 2009 update. It took less than 2 hrs to load, even using a very slow laptop and didn't erase any of my favorites (I made a spreadsheet in case it did, after reading some of the other reviews). The update DID change some of the features, slightly. For example, I noticed that the "spell name" option is in a different spot on the "where to" screen and I can't manually select the "sandwich-and-soda"/fast food icon for my favorites. Small things. Anyway, places that were not in the old maps have been added and it seems that misinformation has been corrected for the most part. I've only had the update for a short time, but I have yet to drive to a non-existent or surprisingly-different place than expected. I'd recommend getting this update, especially if you live in one of the specific cities that were significantly updated. And, I would HIGHLY recommend getting a Garmin GPS product if you are debating all of the options out there -- it's worth the money.
Customer Review: NOT WORTH IT.......DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY Summary: 2 Stars
I can't see a difference at all from the 2008 map. Some roads and points of interests are still outdated. The only differnce I got are those new fancy CARS running on my GPS which is I haven't paid for. Installation problems with the DVD i ordered. It seems they don't work on some computers. I called support twice but non was able to help. I even have somebody from them remotely tweeked my computer but none solved it. I've tried running the set-up on 4 four different computers but i got errors except for the last one and it took me almost 3 hours to complete the whole set-up even though I am using a descent fast computer and internet connection. And lastly the set-up erased the old map. I thought i would have given a choice of where to save it during the set-up. I was anticipating that the file would be big so i took out my 4 gig media card from my camera and put it on my device but sadly I don't have a choice. The process has been a hell for me as a regular, average, and non-techy consumer. The update is NOT WORTH
Thank You.....
Customer Review: Best PC Mapping System ever !!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have this software on my computer; it came with my Garmin 2720. I USE THIS SOFTWARE AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK and often more.
I am a photographer and we have 6 photographers working for us. I print complete turn-by-turn directions for each photographer to the church and then from the church to the reception. We have compared our listings to Mapquest and this software is ALWAYS THE BEST!
You can plan a trip across the USA with ease and SEE THE WHOLE TRIP! You can use different waypoints to try different routes to see which is the best for time and distance. For example: when I am going to visit my parents in Mississippi from Ohio, the Garmin gives just the one route which works very well BUT we prefer to go through Birmingham, Alabama. Using this software the difference is about 5 miles longer through Alabama but better for us.
Around 30 to 50 guys go down to South Carolina each year to play golf. Using this software I always plot several options for everyone.
I could not do without this software!!
