I installed the North American map update for 2009 and all went according to plan. The only problem was that the update was too big to fit my Nuvi 650 so I unloaded things like foreign languages and jpeg files and others that I never use and then I was able to complete loading the s/w. It is hard to tell how much data was updated unless I select problems I had during past trips which I submitted to the Garmin people using the proper form to request a change to errors.
I had submitted 3 last year and after loading my update and checking, all 3 of the errors remain in the mapping system. One case in point is that I want to go to an address in Jacksonville, FL from Tampa Bay area. I selected fastest and shortest route and I was routed up I-75 to intersect with US 301 and then north to I-10. From there the route takes me through downtown Jacksonville back towards the south and ultimately to my destination. Time is approx 5.5 hours since I have driven that way before I-4 was completed.
The easiest and best is take I-4 to I-95 to FL9A to my destination. Actual time is about 4 hours. I can't understand what is so difficult about giving me a shorter route on all Interstate and limited access roads?
Otherwise all works okay.

Honestly I didn't see any differences on the map upgrade, not to mention it was expensive I thought. My Garmin Nuvu 350, which I paid a little over $450 for at Circuit City about two Christmases ago, was a rip off from the beginning! Garmin NEVER allowed me to upgrade my maps for free simply because after I registered the "over priced" unit on line, a year had elapsed after I registered it so when I hooked it up to the Internet it said after a year I had to pay! With what these GPS units cost they actually should have a lifetime upgrade! Especially since the upgrade isn't worth the asked price. Also if I followed the directions some of the time I'd be lost for sure. These GPS units defintely need perfected, at least in my area. Even streets haven't been updated after 2 years or more. I suggest NOT to upgrade to these maps unless you are a salesman and travel extensively. I SEEN NO difference! Garmin needs an upgrade on how they distribute their so called map upgrades! The price is ridiculous! By the way, just because it says 2009 doesn't mean it's from that year! It's actually info taken from previous years so the maps aren't accurate for the stated year! I wont be applying for the geek squad anytime soon but I sure can handle my computer for the most part but figuring out garmins maps, codes, file updates, moving files, renaming files, serial numbers and what-not has been nothing but an exhausting headache. I have been trying for days to update to north america 2009 and still have yet to finish. I'de like to put my destination in prior to my trip down south but for whatever crazy reason that isn't working either. Last trip to florida I had to sit in my rental car for 45 minutes while the rest of my family swam trying to pick up satelites so that I could enter DISNEYWORLD as a waypoint. VERY annoying. Oh yeah- and that was after 20 minutes in the airport of trying to enter the rental condo as a waypoint. That NEVER worked and luckily I was smart enough to have brought written directions as a back up plan. I would not take another garmin product if they gave it to me...EVER. The only nice thing I can say is that customer service has been very patient and other than their crappy hours I have not had a problem with reaching them. If you buy a garmin product all I have to say is "good luck"

The Garmin map update products are terrible! The instructions for installing map updates are absolutely unacceptable and woefully lacking. And, when you try calling Garmin customer support that is just about as bad. First of all, customer support is not available after 5PM M-F. No weekend support is available at all! I guess they are not a big enough company to have 24/7 customer support?! Be prepared for long waits on hold!! Email responses are inadequate and untimely. I was unsuccessful in installing my update and in fact after attempting to install the 2009 update my GPS was rendered unusable. Due to the unsatisfactory instructions and customer support I returned my update to Amazon for a full refund. I honestly don't know how Garmin stays in business with their customer and product support ethic!!!! The only way I could get my GPS working with its old map set was to go to the internet and google for similar problems, which I discovered is quite widespread. After considerable effort I was able to get my GPS working. I may never purchase another Garmin product! Perhaps if the instructions were more complete there wouldn't be so many problems.Customer Review: Smooth update

After reading all of the previous reviews, I ordered the update. When it arrived (very fast service), I backed up the existing files on my Garmin C530 as a precaution before proceeding. Turned out to not be necessary - the update was well put together, and ran flawlessly. It did take about an hour and 45 minutes on my 3 GHz Pentium 4 laptop, but there were no problems at all. After it finished, I checked my Favorites (all still there). Even all of the Recently Found items were still there, so I had none of the problems others have encountered. The update process did go online and get a software update prior to loading the new map data. About a week after doing the update, I used the unit to go to a distant store I could find in my sleep, and it did want to take a slightly different route, but after the usual "Recalculating" it led me right to the parking lot of the store in question. I also entered the address of a friend that the previous version couldn't find (the reason for the update), and it mapped it correctly. All in all, I'm very pleased with the update, and just sent an order from Amazon to my sister for Christmas for her C530.
