Customer Review: Garmin 550 Zumo upgrade

The upgrade went very smoothly. Drop the CD in and follow the prompts, with your Zumo connected. It takes a long time. I wasn't timing it but I think it was well over an hour. I think that's just an artifact of the Garmin containing full maps of the U.S... which is one of the nice things about the Garmin, i.e. not having to load different map modules if you are traveling over a wide range of states. My only dissatisfaction was that for an upgrade, I thought it a bit pricey, but the maps were very complete. It contained maps of areas that were relatively new and not on the previous release I had. Garmin Map Update 2009 for City Navigator North America NT
This update still has severe flaws. For example, last week I was traveling route 30 in Ohio and traveling east. The Garmin told me to exit route 30, travel 1/2 mile north and turn right onto "old" route 30. I followed the instructions which meant leaving a limited acess highway to travel on a two lane, snow covered, secondary road. I was really mad at Garmin for such dangerous directions. I would wait until Garmin really upgrades this software before purchasing it again.

I responded to my Nuvi 260's request to update my maps by looking online and by going to the local Best Buy. The guy at Best Buy told me that I have to purchase this map update and every subsequent map update in order to be current. You see, if you skip the 2009 update, thinking that you'll update every 2 years, when you go to the 2010 version it will NOT contain the info that was in the 2009 update. NEW MAP DATA IN EACH UPDATE WON'T BE INCLUDED IN EACH SUBSEQUENT UPDATE! Garmin should include the entire map data in each update, but doesn't. So, get ready to fork over $55 to $75 everytime the gps device wants you to update.Customer Review: City Navigator 2009

I have been disappointed by the new software for Garmin 2009 City Navigator NT North America Map Update. It has updated some of the earlier problems with their information such as stores, restaurants, streets, etc. that have been out of business for 3 or more years, however, I expected something marketed as 2009 info would be more up to date. I still cannot find streets. addresses and businesses that have been in existence for the past 2+ years. Not so up to date after all and my unit is only one year old.
I contacted Garmin when I first purchased by unit about this shortcoming. Too bad it's still not fixed.

The map updates have many bad addresses for businesses and points of interest. The original maps that came with my Garmin had the correct addresses, but the update seems to have put many points of interest at incorrect locations.
Another thing to be aware of is that Garmin will not transfer the "lifetime" updates to a replacement unit. My GPS was stolen about a month after I purchased the update package and Garmin customer support's answer was too bad, buy another. A few key strokes in their database and I would still be a loyal Garmin customer, but their products just aren't that amazing on their own.
