Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of GSI GHD-1027 Hi-Speed 7 Port USB 2.0 HubCustomer Review: Move Along, nothing to see here Summary: 2 Stars
This review is probably worth more than the hub itself. If you want cheap, powered, slow 7-port hub and don't mind gaudy lights like at the cellphone stalls at the mall then this might be for you. I got this delivered from hdeshop.com in 5 days for $10 total. This is attaching to my MacBook Pro as I needed something to leave all my USB devices attached to. It's fine for low speed devices like mouse, keyboard (ADB adapter), cooling fan etc. Even the printer/scanner seemed to work ok. It does not work with high speed devices such as my Zoom webcam, even if only the high speed device is plugged in. Data transference is extremely slow so updating 7 podcasts on my iPod took 30 minutes (but did complete successfully). I explored this closely by testing read/write to an SD card on a generic card reader. Ordinarily write/read speed was 165MB and 364 MB per minute. When plugged into this hub those speeds plummeted to 5MB per minute so don't think for a second you will run some external hard drive or flash drive. I was puzzled because the Apple Profiler software identifies the hub as a 480Mbps hub but I suppose it is possible to use an electronic identifier to lie to the system as the performance did not match. If you just have a couple pics to transfer off your camera then you probably won't notice. Both the power cord and USB to mini-USB cords are 30 inches long with the power plug another 2 inches. Some people will say "ultra portable!" and some will say "way too short!". I'm wondering if it is at all safe, the plug and packaging have no markings to indicate the voltage, current, or grounding and the plug is not tested by UL. In fact, these plugs are supposed to be sealed, this one can be screwed apart. My old Belkin USB hub power cord puts out 5VDC up to 2.6Amp (outside negative) with a right angle plug and this fits just fine. All the lights come on when powered or connected to USB. The center light is multi-colored and flashes over and over again fast and slow like some psychedelic nightlight. I suppose you could crack the case open, pull off the lens and burn it out with a soldering iron if just hiding the hub underneath something is not sufficient. Overall, the main disappointment to me is the lack of high-speed capability.
Update: the scanner function of my printer does not work through this hub. The company offered to send me a refund, but not to find one that works and send me a replacement.
