Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Elgin 3400E LCD Alarm Clock

Customer Review: Very Useful
Summary: 4 Stars

The Elgin Travel Alarm Clock has several features that I like. It is battery operated, which is convenient not only when traveling but in case the electricity goes out at home and you need a functional clock. It has a protective cover so the clock face won't get scratched during travel - said cover doubles as a stand for the clock. The clock not only shows the time (you have a choice of a twelve hour or twenty-four hour format), but the date (date and month, not including year or day of the week). The numbers are easy to read, even for someone as nearsighted as I am. There is also a backlight that activates for approximately five seconds and then automatically shuts off. There is also an alarm feature; a snooze button (this shuts off the alarm for five minutes and then it automatically sounds again); and a nap timer which you can set in fifteen minute increments for up to four hours of nap time. All of the alarm features are loud, but not annoyingly so. Unlike other reviewers, my clock has kept perfect time and hasn't gained any minutes after over a month of usage.

While I really like the Elgin Travel Alarm Clock and use it all the time (even when not travelling), there are a couple of things that I don't like about it. The buttons to unlock the mechanism to set the alarm, time, and calendar are all on one side and it's a bit tricky to use them. The snooze alarm and backlight are activated by the same button - you press the left side to activate the snooze alarm and the right side to activate the light - and on several occasions I've woken up in the middle of the night and went to activate the light to see what time it was only to inadvertently activate the snooze alarm instead. On those occasions I've had to turn on a light to figure out how to deactivate the snooze alarm (which isn't all that easy to do.) Also, you have to be very careful to make sure the door to the battery compartment is on tight. I accidentally knocked the clock to the floor one night, dislodging the door, and the clock started making a grating beeping noise until I figured out how to latch the door properly - not a fun thing at 3:00 in the morning!

All in all, I really like and get a lot of use out of the Elgin Travel Alarm Clock.

Customer Review: Worst Alarm Clock I've Ever Bought
Summary: 1 Stars

After owning various travel alarms over this years, each lasting anywhere from a few years to several years, I've found this clock a real disappointment. I bought it only two months ago and have had nothing but problems with it. Oh, where shall I begin...??

The battery compartment lid won't stay on and has to be held in place with shipping tape. The buttons that set the time, alarm, date, etc. are TINY, requiring extra care to be certain they're in their correct groove for the function desired. And at least on my clock, they don't STAY in the right groove! Sometimes when I set the alarm, the time won't quit flashing and the alarm won't set because the clock is trying to set the time instead (even though I very clearly have it in the right groove--even jiggling it out and back into the right groove again). It gets stuck like this a lot. Last week the alarm completely failed to go off at 3:00 pm (I was awake and in the room). Just yesterday, when the alarm was set for 9:00 am, it began sounding off at 4:15 am. What in the world?! Perhaps I got an uncommon lemon, but this is ridiculous.

I kick myself for not having kept the receipt, as this piece of junk deserves to be returned to the store I bought it from (Shopko) and sent back to the manufacturer. It's my hope that this review will save someone else the misery I've experienced.

Customer Review: Error in top-rated review
Summary: 1 Stars

Beware the top-rated review! It is reviewing a different clock! It states that the hours and minutes can be set with buttons that move the time up and down. Instead, this clock requires you to go through 23 hours if you accidentally overshoot by one. Worse, if you overshoot the year by one, you have to go through 99 years to get to the correct one.

The clock is also essentially unusable by anyone over 40. Reading glasses will allow you to read the alarm-time digits, but you will not be able to see the alarm-time PM indicator.

Timex, a few years ago, did sell a clock that had the interface described in the top-rated review, with up and down keys and 15-minute fast advance. Why they went back to an interface found wanting in the 1960s is beyond me...

Customer Review: Simple yet useful portable alarm clock
Summary: 4 Stars

This foldable alarm clock runs on 2 AAA batteries, and includes a lighted dial, snooze alarm, and 15-minute increment nap timer. It's easy to set and works like a charm. The 15-minute nap timer is programmable for up to several hours, and comes in very handy for those "power naps" or longer snoozes when you need to wake up, but don't want to set the alarm. My previous unit lasted for over three years of daily use and went on many airline trips and camping trips with me without a problem. The LCD display went out this summer, during a damp camping trip, but for less than $9 I was able to replace it. I'm expecting a good three years from the new one as well. I highly recommend this little traveling clock.

Customer Review: I now have 5 of these alarm clocks
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this little alarm clock so much, I have several throughout my house.

Pros:
* 24 hour time (a huge plus for people who have to work shifts)
* nap timer (I use this feature all the time to wait 15 minutes to see if I have correctly treated a hypoglycemic episode). You can nap up to 4 hours.
* small and portable

Cons:
* can only set the date and time forward; you have to scroll through the entire cycle if you have overshot your value.
* cannot turn the back light off (but it only stays on for about 4 seconds)
* cannot turn the nap timer off
* cannot see how much time you have left on your nap
