Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of 150 LED Light Bulb, Frosted, WhiteCustomer Review: Not worth the money Summary: 2 StarsOK, the newest LED lighting are very cool but expensive. So if you want to buy a household replacement LED bulb for the cool factor, & you can afford it that's fine. But don't fool yourself into thinking LED bulbs are the greenest or brightest per watt bulbs around. The most modern compact fluorescent bulbs out there are much more efficient then ones 2 years ago or LEDs.
A friend bought 2 of these LED bulbs. Side by side, my 5 dollar 2 watt compact fluorescent was almost as bright, & my 4 watt compact fluorescent was much brighter. The CFLs were rated at a color temp of 5100 Kelvin. So are as white as natural daylight, not bluish-purple like these LED bulbs. Modern CFLs now come in all sorts of color temps & shades to precisely imitate any lighting needs from daylight, sunlight, to an ordinary incandescent or soft white bulb.
2700k CFLs, about the color of an ordinary incandescent bulb are usually even cheaper than 5100K CFLs. They can be bought for less than 2 bucks a bulb or in 6 & 12 packs for even more savings.
The trace amount of mercury vapor in these modern CFLs is almost nothing compared to the amount of mercury pumped into the air by coal powered electric generating plants. So any power you save using a CFL greatly reduces the mercury & other pollutants going into the environment. A coal generating plant puts out more mercury into the environment in a day than an entire landfill of modern CFLs ever will. By moving away from oil dependence, more coal will be used.
All CFLs & LEDs are not created equal. Quality varies a lot with the design & components, greatly effecting performance & lifetime. The 14 watt CFL in my hall above the stairs (no windows) has been burning brightly continuously for over 4 years! 8,000 hour CFLs are cheaper than 20,000-100,000 hour ones. But the newest 100,000 hour cold cathode ones are still a lot cheaper & efficient than LED bulbs.
The also exaggerate a lot about the brightness & lifetime of LED lighting, or just leave out the whole truth. No LED or the electronics to run it will last forever. I'd take away 1 star just for lying to me. Although the finest, best designed LED lighting MIGHT last 50,000-100,000 hours if your lucky, by the time it reaches 50,000 hours if it is still running, it's brightness will be down by 40% or more. Is that gonna be bright enough, when it wasn't as bright as you wanted when it was new? If it's still running at 100,000 hours you'll have to go into a darkened room to notice it's still on because it has grown so dim.
Did you notice that an LED alarm clock or LED display in a VCR has gotten so dim you can bearly read it in the daytime anymore in just a few years?
Those 50,000-100,000 hour ratings are for the LED only, run under ideal, perfect conditions, & temperatures anyway. A hot day, power surges, static electricity, dampness or poor design can fry or damage them or the associated electronics to run them.
Ordinary CFLs don't do well in cold weather, but they do make outdoor & cold weather ones that do. But ordinary CFLs been working for me well in Buffalo winters outdoors. Below 20F it may take up to 5 minutes to brighten up to full brightness. Below 10F in takes about 15 minutes to brighten up to 75% brightness, & never reaches full. Below 0F it takes about 15 minutes to get to 50% but never gets brighter.
Ordinary CFLs outside in 3 enclosed outdoor fixtures in the extremes of Buffalo weather last more than 2 years for me.
Choose reputable brands. Don't buy old stock & designs from a couple years ago. Modern CFLs are much better quality & more efficient than ever.
All battery operated fluorescents (like lanterns) don't work well & are not as efficient as LEDs. They use olds fashioned tubes, & power supplies, that are also very poorly designed. The tubes also go dim or die pretty quick. Also LED flashlights will also out perform any other flashlight. So if you're an LED freak & want LEDs for a cool factor buy an LED lantern or flashlight. Don't waste your money on household LED bulbs.
