Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner

Customer Review: HArdware great, software not so much...
Summary: 4 Stars

Been using this scanner for a few weeks now and basically, I'm pleased. Hardware works very well. I scanned-in a 300-page manual with varying thickness paper in just a few minutes without any feed problems or other errors. Works quickly and accurately. However, the software that comes with the machine is a bit lacking. It does not have a TWAIN driver, so you're stuck with the software supplied by Fujitsu. The main program, Scansnap Organizer, does an adequate job of organizing, viewing and managing scanned documents. However, it has only very rudimentary editing and modification capabilities. So, one has to run a separate supplied program, Adobe Acrobat (Version 8; not the current version 9), to do much with the documents. In addition, the OCR software supplied only works with documents scanned-in using the ScanSnap scanner. So if you want to make other PDF files searchable, or convert them to text for editing, you need to have another OCR software program available.

Customer Review: Technology does not get better than this
Summary: 5 Stars

I am happy to agree with the other positive reviews. This thing works! Hooked up to my new Thinkpad, it is a rocket with only one paper jam due to 2 pages stapled together (my bad) and 2 pages that simply refused to scan as 2.

Clearing paper jams is a snap and the software is intuitive without being annoying. Everything should work this well. I am going to buy a second one for my home. It does not replace a scanner for photographs, but for documents, bills, receipts, etc, it is perfect. It corrects skewed feeds and it almost always auto-rotates correctly - even when one sheet is vertical with the following sheet horizontal.

And one can set it for duplex (auto 2 sided scanning) or one sided simplex. When set to the former, it can be set to auto delete a blank page. When a multi-page scan has one sided and two sided pages mixed in - no problem - blank pages deleted.

All in all, a pleasure to use - well worth the price.

Customer Review: The best little scanner I've used...
Summary: 5 Stars

All I can say is that this little scanner is amazing. It works at the speed I need and the software is as simple as I like. I am a semi-geek, but I like user simple software. The less buttons I press, the happier I am. I have to do too much of that at work, so at home, I wanted something simpler. I had tried the Plustek SmartOffice PS282 Duplex Scanner, which has the same body type, but the quality and the software was terrible. The speed was slow, even at their simplest, and the quality of the PDFs were not acceptable. It could not even get the colors right on photos, whereas the ScanSnap does excellent copies. It cost me an extra $100, but if it lasts me long enough to digitize my library of books and files, then, it was well worth it. I told HP to move over because so far, all of their equipment, from scanners to PCs have left me dissappointed.
If you need a simple to use, and fast scanning capabilites, then this is the scanner for you.

Customer Review: Very fast, works as advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

It scans even faster than the advertised 18 pages/minute. With B&W one-sided 8.5 x 11 documents (all that I use), it scans what feels like a page per second. By default it saves as 8.0 PDFs that I can attach to email or save to a folder. It took two phone calls for help in setting up, but the tech answered fast, was patient and walked me through the process -- and invited me to call again if I had more questions. The only jams occur when I try to feed a stack of pages that include pages that are imperfect -- corners wrinkled, etc. So I feed those in one by one. I also have to feed in pages that are of various sizes in the same stack, but that is not a hardship. This scanner includes an OCR feature that I have never used. I have a flat bed scanner for that purpose. I am in a business that generates lots of paper, so this scanner is a great help. (It also prompted the purchase of a back-up hard drive -- but that's another story.

Customer Review: A Life Saver!
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't normally leave reviews for items I purchase -- and especially for things that I bought well over a year ago. (I got this item in March 2009.) But I just want to say that this little scanner has been a life saver for me! I got this to enable me to begin digitizing old records and files - and it's truly a wonder. Very few electronic items that I've purchased have ever been so trouble-free, easy to use, and work so reliably and quickly. Since getting this Scansnap, I've scanned into PDFs well over 15,000 pages and NEVER had ANY problems with it AT ALL. Due to the feed mechanism, it's primarily for document scanning (i.e., not photos, which I have a totally different style of scanner for) -- but this Scansnap is worth twice the price for the time and trouble it has saved me. I can't recommend it strongly enough. And amazon.com, of course, was the best price, quickest shipment, and as usual, great to work with.
