Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed ScannerCustomer Review: Excellent value and performance Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using the product for about 6 months. Previously I had been frustrated with my H+P flatbed scanner -- lots of document jams, very slow start up and scanning times, and many software crashes. The S510 has been a breeze and has really improved my productivity. I scan a LOT of documents for my paperless medical practice -- anything from single sheets to entire 900 page medical charts. This little machine handles it all. Very fast, double-sided scanning with automatic detection, and quick, intuitive software. I save most of the files to PDF, but I occasionally scan right to my printer or scan to email -- all of these features are great. I haven't tried scanning for editable text yet. Nice compact footprint on my desk. Quiet function. The only thing I can possible say is that the outfeed tray should be a little wider -- pages tend to push each other a bit, occasionally causing a stack to fall onto the floor. Really not a big deal if you're sitting next to the machine to occasionally reach over and adjust the stack. Overall, 5+ stars especially considering the reasonable price.
Customer Review: Great, but won't work on a server... Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this item for my small office. I wanted it to be shared by the partners on the server, as it scans super fast and comes with a complete standard version of Adobe Acrobat 8.0.
Nevertheless, the software and hardware are not compatible to work on a windows 2003 server environment. You have to practically restart the server in order for the thing to work, and if the server goes into sleep mode or you turn the S510 Scansnap scanner's power off, the server won't recognize it.
It worked great on my Windows XP Professional PC; nevertheless, DO NOTE that you must have Windows SP2 for XP installed on your computer. I don't know how it will work with Windows vista. In any case, do consult with a techie or a specialist to get the thing running, because you may run into the SP2 conflict, and it can get confusing as even if you have it installed the menus in the quick start guide do not necessarily come up, so you're left with a big "What now?" face on your expensive investment, especially if you're no computer techie or see-what-happens experimenter.
Customer Review: Fabulous product in a compact package Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using the scanner for a week and have nothing but good things to day.
Install - install took a little while - maybe 30 minutes or so, but I followed the instructions (don't plug in scanner until you are done installing) and had no problem at all.
Bundle - it is fabulous that this comes with Adobe Acrobat 8.0. If you don't have it already, that saves you at least $100 on the upgrade (more if you have to purchase the full version). I already had 8.0, but was able to pass the new copy onto another person in my office who didn't have it yet.
Use - It really is simple to use, open, insert page(s), press the green button, that's all.
Converting files - I scanned some comment sheets from excel and used the bundles software to convert to excel, and it worked GREAT!!!
Size - It really is smaller than I thought it would be, it's footprint, even when opened for use, is smaller than a sheet of paper.
I am looking forward to getting rid of lots of paper with the help of this product.
Customer Review: Definitely worth the price Summary: 5 Stars
I went through two other document scanners in the last few months -- the HP Scanjet 5550C and the Pentax DSmobile 600 -- before finally ponying up for the Fujitsu. The HP I sold after a few weeks (ADF never worked), and the Pentax I ended up throwing in the garbage (original unit was defective as was the warranty replacement I received). I would have saved myself a whole lot of time and money if I had just purchased the Fujitsu from the get go.
The S510 is pretty much perfect. Right out of the box it looks and feels carefully thought out and well designed. The software and drivers work perfectly with Vista. It scans quickly and clearly. The document feeder works great, and almost never jams (and even then, it opens up in a snap -- quite a difference from the HP, which required two different screwdrivers to open up in case of a jam). I love the way it scans directly to PDF, and preforms OCR and indexing in the background when your computer is idle.
This is a great product, well worth the money.
Customer Review: Fast but Slow Summary: 4 Stars
I love this scanner. It's small. It's EASY to use. Easy to set up. Scans jpg's and PDF's. Scans both sides. I use the scanner in a small business enviornment. We are small manufacture that ships LTL and full truckload orders all over the 48 states. We scan every invoice, every POD, and every anything that relates to running the business. Me best guess is 60-180 pages per day. I have found only two problems with the scanner. 1.) Unless you are scanning crisp fresh paper, the autofeed will only work with 5-9 pages at a time. Anything that has been tri-folded for mailing, don't expect 25-50 page autofeed. 2.) Non-standard size paper. We have a couple companies we work with that send dot-matrix invoices. These are 6" x 9" pieces of paper. I have not found a way to scan multiple pages at once. I need to scan them one page at a time. Due to these two issues, it makes the process a little slow. But when you place 20 page fax in the scanner, it is beautiful to watch the speed.
