Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for PCCustomer Review: Very, very nice Summary: 5 Stars
Over decades I have accumulated 6 (!) full boxes of sheet music that I have moved multiple times all over the U.S. That's 300 lbs. of paper. With the ScanSnap I have undertaken to scan this entire paper archive. That means ripping apart these volumes to prepare them for scanning. Here's what I found:
- A serious shortcoming of the ScanSnap is its inability to scan paper wider than 8.5". As most sheet music is 9x12 I have had to use a paper cutter to trim the material down to 8.5x11. Highly inconvenient.
- I found that you can scan an 800-page duplex document in one go just by continuously feeding 40-page batches into the ADF. Made quick work of very voluminous material.
- The jamming problems cited below are easily solved by hand-flexing the paper to separate and air individual pages. Then, as you place them into the ADF make sure that you "step" the pages (i.e., skew the paper deck). Problem solved. (The guy who recommended entering previously stapled paper backwards is spot-on).
- The cleaning wipes that Fujitsu recommends work very well and are a must for keeping the unit in good working order.
- Thin, glossy paper jams easily. Best solution is to continually feed page after page into the ADF. Labor-intensive but no loss in speed.
Customer Review: Solved my problems Summary: 5 Stars
This scanner was easy to install, works fast, duplex scans are simple, and it comes with Adobe Standard, which is nearly worth the cost of the unit. I scanned a 300 page double sided document, saved it in a high quality 12 meg searchable pdf file, and then optimized it to 4 meg so it could be emailed. I have nothing to compare this to as I have no further need of my flat-bed other than to copy a page from a book. The sheet feeder is fast, and the software is turned off when the unit is not in use. Open the lid and load your document - an icon indicates it is ready - right click on the icon when you're ready and pick from a short menu - duplex or simplex - pick one and the feeder zips the paper through. For a large document I did about 40 sheets at a time - then used Adobe standard to put them together. The book above took about 15 minutes to scan and about 5 minutes to put together and then optimize.
Another nice feature is it folds up neatly on the desk, covering the working parts and protecting it from dust and office debris. In the closed position it is easy to dust and I can utilize the space in front for active projects.
So far, I'm liking it, and it is the only piece of electronic equipment I've ever felt compelled to write a review about. What does that tell you?
Customer Review: Best $400 We've Ever Spent Summary: 5 Stars
We have a $6,000 printer/scanner. I FAR prefer this $400 Fujitsu scanner. Our expensive scanner cannot scan double and single sided pages at the same time (you could scan them all double sided, but they you end up with a ton of blank pages). Our expensive scanner cannot handle mixed sizes of paper; this one can.
I have scanned checks, business cards, brochures, note pad sized paper--all with no problem.
The business card scanning feature is so cool! Once I figured out how to add fields to the default setup, I just toss the cards in, it scans and recognizes the fields, then I can export them to Outlook!
It's tiny--it sits on my desk, so now intead of walking down the hallway, switching our big machines from copy to scan, sitting down at the workstation, firing up the scanning software, scanning, changing the machine back to copy, and returning to my desk, I pop what I want to scan on the ScanSnap, hit the button, and WHAM! Pages go flying through and I'm done.
The reviewer who complained you cannot append exisiting files was mistaken. If you scan your new pages, then open the original document, you can easily insert the new pages in "edit" mode of the ScanSnap software.
I absolutely love this thing!
Customer Review: Better than using ADF on an MFC, but . . . Summary: 3 Stars
I am a basic user who sometimes has many pages to turn into PDFs, and I hope to get around to turning a lot of papers I need to retain into PDFs so I can get rid of the papers. This is a review of Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for PC
Small foot print of the S1500 is great but construction is really flimsy for a $400+ device. I handle it very gingerly. I don't think the latches and unfolding sections would last long if I had to use this on a daily basis.
I had used a lite version 11 of Paper Port which came bundled with my Brother printers. It allowed me to scan 1-x pages and then add pages, and more pages, until I had one big PDF document to save. As far as I can tell I cannot do that with this scanner's bundled software. For example, if I get a stack of 20 papers to scan to PDF, and I find an additional 10 pages I want to add, I can't. I will have a file of 20 pages and a file of 10 pages. I then have to use another program to combine the 20+10. A waste of time. The largest single PDF I can make is 50 pages.
Scanning speed is excellent. Same for quality of scans.
Customer Review: Best Tech Product Ever Used Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best tech product I have ever used. Can digitize all books and read on your PC or Kindle with ease. It is shockingly fast if you are migrating from a regular flatbed scanner. The bundled software package (Adobe and Fujitsu software) makes the scanner actually less expensive that is seems. Its realiable with rare jams if your documents are clean and properly cut and aligned. Even if pages are upside down the scanner adjusts the rotation automatically. Would recommend purhcase to anyone looking to digitize books or go to a paperless office.
The primary drawback is to maintain this scanner the so called "consumables" are quite expensive. fujitsu recommends purhcase of some proprietary cleaner. I didn't dare use alcohol nor water and ended up buying the cleaning sheets (so called F1 wipes) at >$20 per box of 2 dozen wipes. they need to lower the price or disclose whether other non-propeietary cleaners are OK. Supposedly the wipes prevent dust from sticking to the surfaces but after 5,000 pages one still sees paper dust inside. Would recommend keeping the scanner clean though given how expensive it is. Still this scanner is a great value and in terms of efficiency its the best tech product I have ever used.
