Customer Review: Why it's worth a few extra bucks and something else to get in addition this

Having a tripod with any model Flip is a great idea. There are several kinds available, some costing far less (like the Sunpak 620-786 Mini-Spider Tripod) and some costing a bit more (Joby GP1-D1EN Gorillapod Flexible Tripod (Grey)). I like this best. The less expensive ones I've seen all have a terrible smell. The odor is a cross between oil and burning plastic and it doesn't go away. Better still is it gets on whatever touches the tripod. The Joby is OK but it doesn't look as good on a Flip camera, the mounting plate sticks out a bit. By contrast, this tripod looks, works, and smells just fine.
A handy accessory to whatever tripod you choose is something that will help you level the camera. That avoids having people leaning to one side in your video. The Opteka Hot Shoe Two Axis Double Bubble Spirit Level for Digital and Film Cameras will help you solve that problem. All you do is set it on top of the camera and adjust where it (the camera) is pointing until the two bubbles are between the lines. (And when you're not shooting videos it's a handy way to make sure pictures hanging on your wall aren't crooked.)
BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews take the place of first-hand experiences that are lacking in online shopping. Regarding the Flip Ultra and Mino HD Tripod. I received this with my Mino HD purchase along with a set of "Down Load Cables" that enable me to play directly from my Mino HD to my TV or copy my videos to either a VHS tape or a DVD.
I am a ventriloquist and enjoy taking video of myself with the least bit of hassle possible, so that I can practive my craft critique my work, and create video bits of my work.
The Tripod is an excellent way for me to position my Flip Mino HD camcorder on a surface such as a table and then by placing a mirror behind the camcorder on the tripod I can view the video window on the back and keep myself in the picture along with my puppet of choice while being up front of the lense. Of course this will work for many other aplications as well, for various performance situations, playing an instrument singing, making a speech etc.,whether you are working in front of the camcorder or recording someone else from behind it.
Another good feature is that by steadying the camcorder / tripod with one hand as it sits on the table or other surface, one can zoom and pan more easily, and eliminate the jittery effect of a video that, if the camcorder were hand held, would occur when going to telephoto or close up shot using the + and the - touch buttons. The fact that the tripod's legs are adjustable is a plus and allows you to set up the camcorder at various angles for the most desirable effect. I think this is the most valuable accessory to chose if only one choice is being made. However If two are offered the down load cables are the very next choice for versitility. An excellent product! For use as an inexpensive table-top stabilizer, this Flip tripod works well, but it has its limitations, primarily if you don't have a flat surface at the right height for filming. For that, you'll need a regular, adjustable-height tripod. But if you just want to stick your Flip camera on the nearest surface to film an event (or yourself), then this is a great and affordable option. The tripod is lightweight, easy to stick in a handbag or briefcase, and only 5" tall without the legs splayed. The package comes with rubberized feet in five colors, including black, a cute gimmick that teens or preteens might like.
Using the tripod couldn't be easier. Simply screw it into the base of your Flip camera, spread the legs to stabilize it, and start the camera. You'll have to eyeball whether it's level, and you won't be able to angle it much without the weight of the camera tipping it over. You'll need a flat surface at least 4" square to rest it on. Once you set it up, the feet stay where you left them, so there's not an issue of their moving once you start filming.
Although this tripod is not as versatile as a larger, more expensive one, it is perfect for many situations when a Flip is used.

I have the HD ultra flip. Before I ordered this on Amazon I was fortunate to get to play with various tripods at a store display and talk to a sales person who showed me that, while some of the cheaper ones were just fine in a pinch or if you wish to save some cash, this model required less "work" in getting the flip to be positioned correctly for shooting. Some of the others required a bit more adjustment to get it to hold the weight of the flip correctly and be stable.
That said, if you are pinching pennies...you can search for cheaper tripods on Amazon that can work fine...they just require a bit more adjusting and fiddling with the legs.
If you ever plan to be in a shot at a family gathering, during a spontaneous funny scene, to document the mutual admiration between your dog and you, or your kids and you, or your spouse and you...let's face facts, you need a tripod so you can walk away from the camcorder and be in the scene. And the legs allow you to get your camera ready to go just about anywhere, even if you need to do some tripod leg bends.
It's made for the Flip so it works great with it, in my opinion...even after I played with a few others to convince myself prior to ordering.

This tripod is a must-have accessory for Flip UltraHD owners; easy to install, sturdy and flexible, the tripod eliminates the shakes of handheld video production.
The tripod comes with optional sets of colored feet in white, yellow, orange and hot pink. The extra feet are a nice addition, both functional (no scratching the table) and fashionable (four color options). The tripod screws into the bottom of the Flip UltraHD and provides as much as a 5-inch lift to the camera, depending on how you bend the legs of the tripod.
Amazon's special holiday offer included two accessories with the purchase of a Flip UltraHD Camcorder, so I chose this tripod and the Flip Video Power Adapter. I purchased this as my wife's Christmas present but it never made it under the tree. She loves the Flip and the tripod.
Don't cheat yourself by buying a lower-priced (lower-quality) tripod. This is a sturdy, flexible tripod that folds up nicely; a great accessory. Rating: Five stars.
