Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip Video Camcorder: 60-Minutes (White)Customer Review: Youtube's Best Friend Summary: 5 Stars
I bought my Pure Digital Flip about a month ago so I could make youtube videos for my long distance relatives and for fun. I youtubed my buns off with it and carried it everywhere I went. Literally! I thought for the price of the camcorder the video quality was great and perfect for youtube purposes!
I have to agree, I'm not crazy about the USB arm. I ofted had to prop the camera on something while it was plugged into my computer because other wise it would be suspended in midair by the plugged in arm. I think the sound quality is fine for talking in normal voice. I am a singer and found that the mic doesn't perceive a strong singing voice very well, and the sound gets distorted.
A word of advice to those of you whom carry their camcorder with them at all times as I did. Do not leave it in your car. Not even for a second. I had mine in my purse tucked under the dash and someone smashed our window and stole my purse along with my camcorder, wallet, and our radar detector. So KEEP IT WITH YOU. I did love this camcorder so much though, that I will be purchasing the same Flip Video camera (black 60 minute)that I had.
Customer Review: No support Mac OS X Leopard Summary: 2 Stars
The camera itself is pretty nice, but for now there is no real support for Mac OS X Leopard. Here's the message I received when I inquired about why the Flip Video download program didn't work on my computer:
"The Flip Video camera does not support Mac OSX Leopard (OSX 10.5.x), so
we cannot guarantee that the Flip Video program will have full
functionality. However, you should still be able to access your videos
in order to play and save them.
We are working on adding Leopard support in future versions of our
software and camcorders. We are also hoping to provide an upgrade to our
current users, although we do not have a release date.
While we do not technically support Leopard, we have an update that
seems to allow for smooth functionality of the Flip on Leopard. It would
be beneficial to upgrade your camcorder on another computer using this
link: http://www.theflip.com/app/prius/31/update/. You can then try to
run the program on your Mac.
We apologize for any inconvenience, and hope you won't hesitate to
contact us further."
Customer Review: Its easy to take the videos but to use them is difficult. Summary: 3 Stars
It is true that the flip is very easy to use to take videos but you have to have some computer sense to be able to offload the videos from the device, save them to your computer, and do things like take snap shots out from your video. This is all easy for me but for my mom who I bought the device for has trouble doing all of this and being able to use the videos she takes without me doing it for her. The only thing she can do by herself is show the movies on her TV but even that was a bit tricky for her. Also I noticed to other things that bring this product down. One is that the pictures you can take from your video are very bad quality even though the video quality is decent. Also the flip out USB plug in makes it harder to connect to a laptop then just a cord would be because if your laptop is not thick with a high up USB port you have to either prop up part of your computer to connect it or just have it on your lap. This problem applies to all macs and some pc's. Overall it is fairly simple to use but I would not say technologicly idiot proof and it has some minor flaws in the design.
Customer Review: Warning, read this b4 you buy!!!!!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this little "camcorder" because it was simple. It said you can send videos to your friends and you can make videos and all kinds of great stuff. Well, let truth be told. You don't send friends videos. You send your friends an email wrapped from a company called "crackle". I call it a You Tube "want to be". That's right; you send your friend an invite to go to the website "crackle" to view your friend's video. They get your personal information first, beware.
Also, you can't just create a video and down load it to a DVD. NO NO NO! You have to take your device to an authorized retailer and they down load the video to a DVD for you and then, you guessed it, CHARGE YOU between $15.00 to $25.00 Also, even though the website gives you retailers, that doesn't mean they will be set up. Many of them don't even have the equipment yet to process. We had to go to 4 authorized places. One place had never done one and didn't know how.
So I am just saying study this before you spend all that money. Know what your buying and READ the small print!!!
Customer Review: Good fun in a small package Summary: 4 Stars
The camera is great fun for those in close moments. Definitely not the camera for all of your family memories to keep forever. The quality is ok for the price you pay, it actually within about 20 feet of shooting, the quality is just fine. In trying to use it for anything further out in distance it gets pixelated and begins to blur.
Overall it really makes a great present for your young teenager and actually can serve as a dual purpose parenting device. Because just like with Girls gone whatever, kids seems to still do the same stupid stuff even if there is a camera on them and sometimes only because there is a camera on them. So its funny (and concerning sometimes) to see the videos and audio of whats being done when your not around.
This produces pretty good quality youtube videos and actually looks good when plugged into the tv directly. Like I mentioned before, the only knocks against this are videos taken for long distance viewing, and low light gets a little grainy. But what do you expect for less than hundred.
