Customer Review: Great Camera....But Software Sucks

I own a Mac, and I was expecting a flawless install like with everything else Mac. However, the software would lock up every time I tried playing or editing or exporting a video.
I eventually figured out that I could just treat the camera like an extra drive and copy the movies to my local hard drive. However, since the files are saved in AVI (a PC format), I had to purchase Quicktime pro to open the AVI files, save them as MPEG, so I can then open them in iMovie.
For some reason, iMovie will not just read the camera and import straight from the camera...so I have to go through somewhat of a hassle to get the videos into iMovie. I just deleted the Flip software that came with the camera. It was worthless.
Other than the software issues, the camera is a great unit, though I wish the microphone were a bit more sensitive. Does a great job adjusting to lighting conditions.

This is a great device. Unless you are a professional it has all you will ever need in a video camera. It is a simple point and shot with a zoom that is adequate for most tasks. The ability to just flip out the USB on the side and load the clips directly onto the computer makes life so much easier.
What wasn't clear when I bought it was that the video is stored in a series of clips. This allows you to flip through them and delete the ones that you don't want. I really like this ability.
The camera is small and compact. I find that I have it with me more often because it fits into my pants pocket. Try that with a regular video camera.
Overall this camera is awesome. It's inexpensive so you don't worry about the kids making their own videos, it small so you carry it more often and it takes great pictures. I loved it so much I bought a second.

The Flip video is idiot proof and it comes with no bells and whistles. Just what the average user needs. This is a point and shoot camcorder and it works quite well. It is sized right for the average pocket so you can take it along when ever you feel like it. I purchased the 60 minutes version as an upgrade from the 30 minutes version I had bought a year ago. I used it extensively during a 2 weeks voyage on a sailboat going from Maine to Bermuda and back in June 2007. The Flip just sat there on a shelf and everybody used it whenever he or she felt like it. The result is about 90 minutes worth of great, short video clips, documenting our trip from start to finish. This would have been very cumbersome with a more traditional camcorder which would have required more knowledge to operate. Bottom line = I do like the Flip. We bought this product, Flip Digital Video camcorder for our sons, aged 35+, as a christams present. We were worried once we had purchased it as both of them have I pods and other camcorders. We had no need to be worried they were both highly satisfied with the gift, it gives them instant access, via the computer or TV, to the video they have just taken. It is so easy to operate just switch on and point. The quality of the recording is exceptional considering its small size. As we have just said, the beauty of the Flip is its small size, it will fit into a handbag , pocketbook, golf bag, beachbag or whatever you are taking with you. Think how many times you have seen something you would have liked to record in that instant and have not been able to, this solves the problem. Would I reccommend it? in a heartbeat. This Flip Video Camcorder is extremely easy to use and is small enough to keep in your shirt pocket. It can be used indoors or outside without the need for an external light source. Don't expect professional video quality, but the quality is perfect for viewing on the PC and satisfactory for viewing on the TV. PC viewing is very simple - just plug the unit into a USB port on the PC and you're in business. Everyone that sees it expresses a desire to have one. Instead of telling my wife "Hey, guess what I saw today", I can show her.
It's great for recording those unexpected moments with your grandkids, pets, etc. The only thing I'm having difficulty with is realizing that the unit will record 60 minutes of video and I don't have to worry about limiting the amount of time I record something. I highly recommend this unit.
