Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip UltraHD Video Camera - Black, 8 GB, 2 Hours (2nd Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: Good Pic & Uses AA Batteries, But That's All
Summary: 3 Stars

My Review of Flip UltraHD vs. RCA EZ300HD Small Wonder

Screen
Select pic (HD,HQ & Web)
Recording Hrs. (Can't Hrs. (Upgrade to 16g chip=51+ hrs Web,
17+ hrs. HQ & 8+ Hrs. HD)
Takes Still
Take self (Lens moves)
USB
Comes with (USB & AV)
Hold Good
Cloth Carry
Upload video from Comp.>Camera (Not that I know of)

I purchased both the Flip UltraHD & The RCA EZ300HD.

Overall I prefer the RCA EZ300HD. The RCA can be upgraded & has many more capabilities.

I added a 16g memory chip to RCA & got:

51+ hours recording time in Web quality pics
17+ hours recording time in HQ quality pics
8+ hours recording time in HD quality pics

I also bought a 2nd battery.

Naturally with long record times (Memory) you need spare batteries.
But you don't have to keep downloading your pics to the computer.

The Flip fits your hand Nicely, the RCA is almost as comfortable.

The RCA Has double the Zoom 4x as compared to Flip 2x.
Also RCA has manual Zoom set on lens.

The ONLY 2 things that the Flip UltraHD has better then the RCA EZ300HD
is the pic quality is a bit better & it can use any AA batteries.

The Flip's abilities are very limited.

Customer Review: Easy to use, budget friendly HD pocket camera for kids of all ages
Summary: 4 Stars

I already knew I would love this camera because both of my children already own their own F130W Flip cameras.

This camera is easy to use, budget friendly, small enough to fit in your pocket with decent picture and sound quality to capture those impromptu family/friend moments without having to lug a camera bag and larger video camera around. This fits in your pocket or pocketbook quite comfortably.

I LOVE that you can use either the included rechargeable batteries or regular rechargeable AA batteries. No need to worry about losing power while filming your memories. I have tons of Energizer rechargeable batteries around so always an easy power source. The included rechargeable batteries are fine, I just like that I can use that until it dies, carry a few rechargeables with me and then recharge the main battery at night while I'm sleeping. Energizer NH15BP-4 Rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride AA Battery 4 Pack

No need to break out a manual just to use either the camera or the software. Flipshare software is very simple, even my 7 year old can use it to make his own movies (since he was 5) Camera is easy enough for people of all ages because there are so few buttons and all buttons are easy to figure out.

-Works great with my Macbook Pro.

I will probably look into purchasing a Sima video light to help with low light conditions. Sima SL-20LX Ultra Bright Video Light (Black)

MY TWO COMPLAINTS:
I wish it had an on board battery life indicator.
The included velveteen bag is so snug that you easily get fingerprints on the lens while trying to put it in the bag, even if you are being careful. I will be solving this by purchasing a better quality bag to protect it from scratching in my messenger bag.

EDITED TO ADD: I just got back from a vacation and realized that I could get some pretty great video grab snapshots of some of my more elusive family members....good enough to print out clearly on 8x10 photo printer paper. Super easy to scroll through the video screens for the perfect snapshot grab. I had never tried this before with our older Flip cameras because the resolution on them really isn't good enough for such a large photo but on this HD model it's great!

Customer Review: WOW..1st. HD movie in less 5 minutes

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I don't know what I was expecting but this little Gift has already exceeded my expectations. Hands down Flip has changed the video world with this little baby.....Good Job Guys.
I timed it and no lie...... within 5 minutes of opening the box I had created a short HD Movie, uploaded it and sent both an email enclosure and the coolest Video Greeting Card .......Now that is what I call easy, and slick. I am not a novice with either digital or video cameras but this is so easy even my elderly relatives could be shooting Good video within minutes. The quality of the picture is very, very nice. I viewed it on my 1080P Samsung HDTV and it was sweet.
The camera came with a soft pouch to protect the lens and the LCD screen. This little thing will fit most any pocket or purse. It also has a non-slip , matte finish ( I have a Black one)).... I was pleased that the batteries come at least partially charged After doing my little video test run I plugged it into the USB of my laptop and away we go. Uploaded the software and VIOLA.. we are all set
Now this can't be any easier and to get this quality of video is just amazing.. If you don't have a HDMI connection between your computer and a TV invest in the HDMI adapter.. what a picture improvement you will see.Well worth the extra $25.
Can you tell I LIKE this little thing ?? YES .. your right. This will provide a lot of fun for all members of a family. Everyone will want to get their hand on it..
****** Update:
Well I have had the opportunity to try out one of the competitors sm video cameras.......well Hands down the FLIP is soooo much better. I was surprised at how hard they made their camera to use vs the simplicity of the FLIP.....Their buttons didn't response easily, the ports on the sides of the camera were so small that you need a COIN to access them and I have small hands. The sound quality was so poor.. Nothing like the great stuff I get on this little Flip. and the software was very difficult to use........ OK can I give this FLIP something higher than a 5 STARS....if so I would easily....Oh and my technophobic friend even wants one now..
What else can you say but that it is that easy to use !!!!!

Customer Review: Very small, Very compact, Great for the money
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a Panasonic, I paid over $400.00 for, that takes mini tapes, that can be converted to DVD's in the computer. It is heavy, it is hard to use, and larger than some. When I bought it, it was on the tail end of camcorders
that were higher priced. I used it a few times, and it is in the closet.

I saw Oprah with this on one of her shows. It might not have been this model, but it was a Flip. I went to Sears, and looked at it, but really wanted it to match my white Casio digital camera, and my white Blackberry Pearl. (Nothing like having all my gadgets match.)

I began to research it, on Amazon, mostly, and decided to try it. I found a white one, like the black one pictured, at Target. It is very small. Look at the specs! It fits in the palm of my hand, and has an excellent screen. The video is sharp, and amazing, and beats my higher priced Panasonic by a long shot. I am impressed, cause the minute I placed the batteries, and set the date and time, and hit the record button, it began recording. I could easily delete it inside the camera.

The video is sharp, and near perfect quality. My model came with a small microfiber bag,and two AA batteries, and a wrist strap. The price couldn't be beat. I'm taking it to Florida next week, and intend to use it on the dolphins. Never mind the fact that it doesn't have an SD slot. When it can record 120 minutes of something, who cares? I can upload the video when I get to my hotel. I've recorded my dogs, my plants, and accidently my feet with it. I had no troubles with the software whatsoever.

It weighs ounces. It doesn't take up space, and it's not something I consider to "lug" around. I take it in my purse, with my other belongings. I'm not sure I'm going to even try to take it to rock concerts. They have too many security on every angle, here in Kansas City. It would've been awesome for an outdoor concert, though. I'm going to take it to the skate park, to the ocean, and in fact, everywhere I go. How else can I praise this product?

It has a fast forward, rewind, delete, and record button on it. The USB port pops out,and is protected at all times, until it is popped out with a button. The batteries fit in the lens side, and the cover has a lock mechanism, that I really like, on it. To get more features, one has to spend over $400.00, and risk having something much, much larger. Trust me, I speak from experience.

Customer Review: Fun to play with initially, but pain in the butt in the long run
Summary: 2 Stars

I received the Flip Video HD as wedding gift. I didn't get around to using until a month or two after getting, but I admit - it was a lot of fun. You can keep this pocket size camcorder in your pocket, take it out, and start shooting. It had crisp video and audio quality, and the selling point is the software where you can simply capture a "frame" and make it into a picture. The simplicity of the whole makes up for the fact there is no way to use a zoom on this thing.

Now the thing that kills the overall experience for me on this product is

A.) The battery - the rechargeable battery provided is just crap. Like an Ipod the default way to charge it is to plug it into a USB port. UNLIKE an Ipod, there is no proper indication of where the Flip is in terms of having the battery charged. At least not on the computer.

Now - Flip says you can check the LCD screen, but for me, the battery does not seem to be charging that well. It will get to say 80% or 90%, and then stop charging, and then without you realizing it, start losing power again. It's really strange. Googling around, I found others you have had issues on charging the battery.

B.) The Flip Software. I have Windows 7 Home Premium running on an iCore 3 with 4GB of ram. While the software works at times, at other times Windows pops up an error of something like "Closing down program" for Flipshare. --- For now, the solution I've found is uninstall and re-install the software -- needless to say, this is rather annoying.

Flip seems to be owned/developed by Cisco Systems. While generally a reliable name for networking products, I feel Cisco's foray here into "consumer products" is disappointing. This product is a good effort, but the software falls short of it being a long term user-friendly product.

With a kid on the way soon, I'll probably look into getting digital camera with video options from the likes of old reliables like Canon or Sony.

As for the Flip -- luckily it uses AA batteries, and I have my trusty old Radio Shack Rechargeable AA batteries lying around. Not sure if Flip will work well and last as long with a non-Cisco battery, but will give it a whirl and give an update here accordingly.

For now - if somebody is looking for an easy to use "camcorder" or video thingy - I'd get go back to the trusty old names -- the software for this product is just not ready.
