Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip UltraHD Video Camera - Black, 8 GB, 2 Hours (2nd Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Review of the reviews Designed to save you time Summary: 3 Stars
The purpose of this review is to save you time and hopefully money. Prior to deciding to buy this item I read nearly all of the 300+ reviews at Amazon's Web site. I ordered this item last night and haven't even received it yet but think I can help. Here's what I gleaned. If you buy this product here's what I think will happen and what I suggest you do if you do decide to buy this camcorder:
1. You will probably like it but there's a good chance you'll have a battery charging problem of some sort but there's a work around for that as follows:
A) Remove the battery pack from the camcorder,
B) Connect the camcorder to a POWERED USB port directly on your computer (NOT a mini hub!),
C) when the "Connected" indicator comes on, insert the battery pack into the camcorder,
D) SAFE eject your camcorder from your computer (don't rip it out!),
E) Reconnect your camcorder to your computer
2. It is unlikely the camera will function satisfactorily for more than six months to a year. The manufacturer warranties the product for 90 days. I think there is a good reason for that.
3. After fifty-five years on this planet and being a significant and regular buyer of all types of items from Amazon for many years I strongly encourage you to buy the two or three year Square Trade Warranty that's available. I've researched Square Trade and believe you can buy this warranty with confidence and when the camera stops working, unless it's due to abuse or damage, you'll be refunded the purchase price of the camera in a timely manner. Alternatively if you buy with American Express there's a good chance you'll have an extra year of warranty beyond the manufacturer's 90 days. Check with American Express on this first though as they have several different cards with different benefits.
4. I am not an employee or shareholder of either Amazon, American Express, Square Trade, or Cisco/Flip (I believe Cisco is buying or has bought Flip) so I have no vested interest in any promoting any of these products.
5. Plan on using this item with a laptop computer and make sure your computer meets the video and power requirements. If you use a Mac laptop, you MAY not be able to adequately charge the camcorder with your computer so you should buy the AC power adapter accessory if you intend to put the camcorder to use right away. Also, there's a good chance you're not going to like the rechargeable battery pack that comes with this camera so you should either be willing to buy AA batteries regularly or have a good AA battery charger and good AA rechargeable batteries. I've never been able to find a satisfactory AA battery charger or AA rechargeable batteries. I'm compelled to add that one person commented on this and said "I'd suggest getting a Powerex MH-C401FS charger (or similar model) as well as some Powerex AA batteries. I've had excellent results using their 2700mha AA's in a Canon A620." I've not tried these rechargeable batteries but in light of this seemingly knowledgeable comment comment will give them a try.
The cost of the three year Square Trade warranty with Tax is about $24. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out that amortizes to $8/year, $0.67/month, or $0.02/day; I think a small price to pay for peace of mind.
I will amend this review in January 2010. I am taking a two week cruise vacation and will test the camcorder on that trip and report back. Then again, after six months, or if the camera ceases to operate properly, whichever comes first, I will amend the review yet again. If the camera fails, you'll also be able to see my review of the Square Trade claims process.
In summation, the way I view this is as follows: My risk is <= $25 to $45. If Square Trade covers only the camera and it fails, then I'm out about $45. If both the camera and the AC Adapter are covered, which I think is the case, then my risk is simply the cost of the warranty or about $24. Even if I get six months of decent fun video, it's worth $45 to me. The industry standard warranty for these types of items is one year. This manufacturer only gives 90 days. I'll be surprised if it lasts a year. I'll be satisfied if it lasts 6 months and only costs me $40 but works well. If it doesn't work as advertised, I'll return it to Amazon and my cost is zero.
It is hoped this review will save the prospective buyer time and money. I've learned from experience that any item with less than 35 reviews and less than 4 1/2 stars on Amazon is a risk to buy. I take the negative reviews seriously. Everything I've read about the Square Trade Warranty claims process is assuring to me. If it weren't I would not consider buying this camcorder as I do not expect it will last for much longer than the 90 day warranty the manufacturer provides.
This camera looks so cool and easy to use. If it works and I get some good vacation videos to watch on our nice 55" LCD I'll be a happy camper. I've also ordered the waterproof underwater case for this camcorder so will report on it as well.
December 4, 2009: Camera and accesorries worked great out of the box. Plugged camera into my desktop Mac and my Dell Desktop and it loaded the software on both machines just fine. As it was plugged into the back of my Mac Desktop the battery charger light was flashing as opposed to just on or off. I'm not sure if this means it wasn't charging properly or if, because of the placement of the USB ports on the Mac (on the back of the monitor) the connection was not addequate. When plugged into the Dell, it charged just fine (charging light solid on when charging then off when charge completed).
More to come in early to mid January, 2010.
February, 2010:
Here's a great little tripod for a fantastic price Vanguard VS41 Flexible MiniTripod. This camera is really fun. Very pleased with the purchase. Nonetheless, I am comforted that I bought the three year Square Trade Warranty.
One concern: The Flip software comes with an e-mail feature. However, on my Windows PC the file is too big to e-mail. Flip does not provide a solution for this. I suppose there's a way one can burn the video to a DVD then share it. I haven't tried the e-mail feature with my Mac yet.
