Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip Ultra Video Camera - White, 1 GB, 30 Minutes (1st Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Good Purchase Summary: 4 Stars
I bought the Flip Video for my husband. We didn't want to spend a lot of money any any sort of sophisticated or "semi-professional" equipment. We just wanted something for basic family use. This camcorder is well-worth the $85 purchase price. The quality of video is sufficient for our purposes. My husband spent an hour or two downloading the softwear and orienting himself to the camcorder. It holds up to 30 min of video, which is then easily downloaded into our computer via a USB that is part of the camcorder. It is very compact- no bigger than my digital camera.
Generally, the Flip is easy to use. There has been one problem: the red button designated to start and stop recording is often unresponsive, so it takes several attempts to start or stop recording. We have never been completely unable to make it work, but it is bothersome. Some quick research on the internet indicated this is a common issue, and the button is being redesigned.
Overall, the Flip Video camcorder is a good value for the price.
Customer Review: Decent unit, some issues Summary: 3 Stars
The Flip Video Ultra is a quick, easy to use, video capture device. The use of 2 AA batteries is a plus in my opinion as one can still use rechargeables, easily afford to carry a couple spares, and easily buy some new ones in a pinch and not worry about dealing with some esoteric, expensive, and proprietary lithium module. I found the video quality to be so-so. It does link right to the television which is nice, but the picture pixelates in shots involving movement. In terms of quality, the video captured by my Fuji digital pocket camera is better. The Fuji file needs to be converted for TV watching though so its not a slam-dunk choice. The particular unit I have is a bit touchy on the play-back button and one has to roll the button to the right to get the dang thing to play the video. I'm guessing this is a quirk of my unit. I purchased my Flip Ultra from Amazon when it was on sale for $49.99. Thus, I am reasonably happy with the unit. I did not give it 4 stars due to the video quality and button issue.
Customer Review: didn't work with my computer Summary: 2 Stars
The flip video camera was incredibly easy to use, but almost too easy. I bought this but am now returning it for a few reasons. The main reason is the fact that it would not work on my computer. It does not tell you that you may have do download an update (found on flip.com) just to make the software work. If you look on their website there are numerous things they suggests you must have on your computer to make the software work which they should have mentioned else where. I have a 2005 Windows XP so it wasn't like my computer was too old for it or anything. It would have taken me hours to download everything. Secondly, I think I would have enjoyed a few more features on a video camera. It was litterily, as it says, point and click. There's nothing else to do with it. Ultimately the flip video camera would be great for you if you know you have all of the requirements and have no other desire but to record. Then again I might feel differently if it actually worked on my computer!
Customer Review: Delivers What it Promises Summary: 5 Stars
This is the second Flip Ultra that I have purchased from Amazon. It does exactly what it is designed to do: produce easily transferable tv quality videos with a minimum of "technical interference" (dials, buttons, and settings) in a very compact package. Slip this in your pocket or purse and it is always available for those "Kodak Moments" that are otherwised missed. The Flip is pretty much "dummy proof" - turn it on, press the red button to start and stop recording, flip out the built in usb arm, plug it in to your computer. Once the video is downloaded you have the option of editing it, adding music to it, emailing it, or uploading to sites like YouTube for online viewing by others. The included editing software is rudimentary, but works for quick edits. The video files can be easily imported into more sophisticated editing programs for more extensive productions. This is an innovative product that is inexpensive enough that no family should be without one.
Customer Review: For the price it's hard to beat! Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great little flash based camcorder for the money. In my opinion the battery door is a little flimsy but other than that the build quality is very good.
Indoor video quality is excellent....even better than my Sony mini dv camcorder. It works very well in low light.
Outdoor video is average at best. The white balance is always adjusting so when you pan across your back yard the grass may start out looking really green and then almost turn to gray by the time you're done panning. Also, it seems as though the whites get a little blown out...for example many times the sky will be bright blue but on the video it will look white.
Another issue is with the focusing. If you're trying to take a video of somebody that's more than 9 feet away they probably will be slightly out of focus. The focus works great up to about 8 or 9 feet though.
If you're using this camcorder indoors I think you'll be very pleased.
