Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip Ultra Video Camera - Black, 4 GB, 2 Hours (2nd Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Not the sleekest looking digital video camera, but surprisingly good for what it is Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I've been through a bunch of digital video cameras at this point: The Creative Vado, the Kodak Zi8, the Flip Ultra (this one), plus video that you can capture with a point and shoot camera.
Let's preface this review with the following: NONE of these pocketable digital video cameras holds a camera to a good quality traditional video camera. That applies not just to the latest generation video cameras, but even to older generation 8mm (or DVD-R) cameras. The traditional video cameras win on lens quality, picture quality, zoom quality, sound quality and just about everything else EXCEPT portability, price and (sometimes) battery life. So if you are thinking of getting this camera to replace your few year old traditional video camera because you think time is passing you buy...don't. The reasons to get a camera of this type are that they are very small, very easy to use, can fit in your purse or pocket, and they get good battery life. If none of those is a game changer for you, you don't need one.
Now on to this particular video camera. I had low expectations when I pulled it out of the box because, well, it looks pretty clunky: Thick (not sleek) and plastic-y. It loses the aesthetics battle right out of the box to Creative and Kodak.
BUT looks are, in this case, deceiving. The camera turns out to be pretty good at what it's supposed to do, which is take acceptable video. Of particular note are the following:
1) Good low light recording. None of these portable video cameras beats any of the better bigger video cameras (sorry, there's only so much you can do with a small lens), but the Flip DOES beat the Vado (which is poor in low light) and the Kodak (mediocre in low light).
2) Replaceable batteries. Most of the portables use an integrated battery, which makes them sleeker. This one uses two AA batteries, which you can replace. The downside is that hit to the size. But the upside is you can bring along more than one set of charged batteries. Normally, I'd say that's a BIG upside. But since the memory here is not expandable, you can't shoot more than 2 hours of video, and a full set of good quality AAs will allow you to fill the camera. So being able to switch out the batteries isn't as big a deal as it is for, say, a still camera (with removable memory).
3) The Flip's built in USB connector is on the SIDE of the camera, not the bottom. This is a good thing, because it means you can set the camera down on its end to take video if you wish. Compare this to the Creative Vado which, for some unfathomable reason, puts the USB connector on the bottom of the camera, along with a pull-tab, which means the camera does not rest level when placed down. Big win for the Flip here over the Vado.
4) The built in microphone is good. It is MUCH better than the miserable one in the Vado and better than the one in the Kodak. A good microphone is essential, and this one is good, or at least good enough.
5) The lens is OK. Not great. (How could it be? It's too small to be great). The Vado has a better (wider angle) lens. The Kodak lens seems about as good.
On the whole, the video you take with this camera is fine. You won't win any competitions on quality, and if you happen to capture a magic moment, you'll probably wish you'd captured it on a better camera (but then again, if you had a better camera, you might not have had it in your pocket to capture that moment--hence the reason you want this camera in the first place!) The video taken with this camera is obviously somewhat inferior to that you can take with a Flip/Vado/Kodak HD video camera. But to be honest, the HD bump is not all THAT much better.
If you can get past the clunky looks, this is a fine standard definition digital video camera, and better than the direct competition.
